Am I the only one who would like a quartz Tsuyosa?

The thinness, weight on wrist, and lower price would be a huge value proposition.

Note* I have an automatic Tsuyosa with a failed movement. I don’t want to pay several hundred dollars for a repair, nor do I want to spend several hours fixing it myself.

Any news on upcoming releases of more 38mm versions?

I’ve owned both the 35 and 40mm versions of the PVD gold PRX. The 38 is the sweet spot, but I haven’t seen any news of it being released in PVD gold.

You don’t hate the PRX, you hate hype cycles

Good craftsmanship, good heritage, good price.

100m water resistance, a competent mix of brushing and polishing, a capable movement, call-back design language, inoffensive yet distinct aesthetics, can dress up or down, the PRX checks a lot of boxes.

The hype had a good foundation, but it got carried away. People started buying the PRX due to exposure and not due to the fundamentals of the watch. Every YouTube channel covered it, every recommendation thread had it (even if the parameters didn’t make sense), and Reddit was inundated with 35mm vs 40mm posts (with the answer being blatantly obvious 90% of the time).

The PRX may not be the watch for you, but it’s hard to deny the value proposition.

[Discussion] Quartz is in Session - My Collecting Journey

Newest to oldest iteration. Not all variations are shown.

I’ve settled on six watches and I finally feel content. I thought I would share my reflections.

I started collecting three years ago. I’ve always worn a watch, but never really studied the hobby.

I used to alternate between a Timex weekender and a G Shock. After getting into the hobby, I obsessively bought, sold, repaired, modified, and studied watches day in and day out.

My journey:

- Weekender and G Shock

- Casio Duro

- Invicta Pro Diver

- Chinese automatics (San Martin, Steeldive)

- Entry Japanese/American (Bulova, Citizen, Orient)

- Entry Swiss (Tissot, Hamilton)

- Micro brands (Sheffield, Yema)

- Neo-Vintage Swiss (TAG, Omega)

What I learned about myself:

- I prefer quartz watches. Mechanical watches are fun and engineering marvels, but the maintenance of entry level movements dissuades me. I can replace movements, but the effort is more than I care to exert for a repair

- I enjoy modifying watches, but I don’t have the time

- I prefer craftsmanship (specs/finishing) over heritage, but I need heritage to be an element of a watch I’m keeping (San Martin is really that good - 0144/0148 - but I always felt like I had to justify them)

- I like finding value, the parameter of an affordable watch made me be intentional about evaluating tradeoffs and priorities, value inputs change as you go upmarket, but I want to feel like I’m getting my money’s worth

- 37-41mm is my sweet spot (6.8 inch wrist)

- I like sports watches

Current collection:

- Hamilton - “enhanced field”

- Omega - statement piece, summer watch

- TAG Aquaracer - daily

- TAG SEL - funky business casual, vintage, summer

- Bulova Super Seville - dress

- Tissot PRX - dress, vintage

Lessons learned:

- You can spend more on, and potentially lose more on resale of, affordable watches than what an entry level luxury watch would cost (fully funded the Omega with the sell off)

- The hunt is addictive and hollow at times, the anticipation can often be more exciting than the watch itself

- Less really can be more, there’s a concept in economics about too little and too much choice, the number of watches you have innately changes your relationship to the hobby

- Wear what you want is fundamental (I don’t like chronographs and that’s fine)

- Follow your gut, applying logic to this hobby can be interesting and help guide you to a point, but collecting is driven by emotion and aesthetics at the end of the day

All in all I’m glad to be a part of the enthusiast community (even if my wife would prefer otherwise).

Going for it

A few months in. About to go on parental leave. Let’s see how far I can take it.

Polish your watches

If my car got sideswiped, I’d buff it out. Same concept with my watches. I routinely buff out scuffs and minor scratches, and polish when the watch gets to a moderate level of wear.

The s** on your honeymoon was memorable, not banging your watch on the doorknob of a bathroom stall.

If it’s a beater or a museum piece, I get it. What I don’t get is the stigma or sentimentality.

I do think that it should be disclosed if a watch has been polished during a sale, just as you need to disclose damage to a vehicle.

How to report an illegally parked car?

My wife is due any day, and we’re having a pet emergency that involves multiple trips to the vet and someone is blocking our driveway.

I left a note, but it’s been there several days and hasn’t moved.

I tried calling, it told me to use the app. I tried the app, it told me to call.

How is everyone resolving parking violations?

Update: Thank you! Based on commenter advice I called non-emergency dispatch and was able to report the violation. I didn’t think about selecting this option initially as they had parking related options.

Quartz is in Session

I’ve landed on a core 6 that I’m very satisfied with. The only switch I want to make is the gold PRX for the 38 when it comes out.

I’ll eventually post about my journey, but right now I’m just taking it in.

Handwatching feels good

Now I’m not talking about a tight bracelet with the crown digging into your hand or a bracelet with too many links.

What I mean is a slightly loose bracelet that stays on wrist most of the time, but slips towards the hand when your arms are down.

A simple flick of the wrist resets the position when your arms are perpendicular to the ground.

It just feels right.
