Canada or Switzerland?

So I’m doing a bit of forward thinking but after I finish my French and Business undergrad in Paris I want to move elsewhere. I’ve narrowed it down to Switzerland and Canada but I’m really struggling to decide, I love them both but in completely different ways. In regards to marketing, I’m most interested in market research and data analysis, or film marketing.

The benefits of Suisse Romande:
- I’m not living as far from family
- I like Swiss culture, I feel like I’d fit in as I’m pretty introverted
- I’m good at picking up languages which is valued there and probably pretty useful professionally
- Extremely safe which is good for my anxiety
- Jobs are better paid
- Lots of countries you can visit easily
- High quality of life

But also:
- As a UK citizen it’s harder to move here than Canada and find a job, if I chose Switzerland the plan is more efficient to stay in Paris and do my masters there, stay there for at least 2 years and wait to get French citizenship and therefore an EU passport and then go to Switzerland which obviously is a much longer path. If I did a masters straight away in Switzerland it’s too hard to find a job without EU citizenship I reckon because after graduating you have 6 months to find a job but it has to be in the interests of Switzerland and it’s hard to prove marketing is so I don’t know if I should risk it even though it’s quicker
- Hot summers and lack of aircon is frustrating
- It’s expensive
- Smaller job market for marketing and less opportunities

And in Montréal the pros are:
- Colder weather overall
- So much easier to move to and start my career after uni (I can just go straight there and do a masters, get a post grad permit and go from there)
- Lots of marketing job opportunities especially in media
- Aircon

But these are the cons:
- Really far from family and I don’t enjoy flying much
- Apparently high taxes and not ideal healthcare
- Probably a lower relative salary than in Switzerland

I just feel really torn. In Suisse Romande I’m much closer to my family and I think I would be happier there but it would take much longer for me to actually move there and I wouldn’t have had the benefit of doing my masters there and gaining local experience either. Whereas in Montréal there are more career opportunities I’m interested in and it’s quicker and more straightforward to immigrate to, but it’s a long flight away.

I really don’t know but I would be grateful if people could share their thoughts about living in either country as it may help me decide. Thanks!

Looking to help a small business with marketing for free

Hi, I’m 17 and have two work experience placements in marketing and communications, where I’ve learned about key skills such as SEO, creating content, analysing data and creating campaigns.

I’m looking for an opportunity to build my CV further and would love to volunteer to help a small business stand out, no strings attached. Just casual and something flexible I can fit round my studies.

I’m particularly interested in market research, and I would say one of my strongest skills is finding and analysing data, and applying it to real life situations. I’d be happy to help with things such as: competitor analysis, consumer research, demographic reports, social media analysis, carrying out surveys and presenting data with recommendations.

Thank you!

how do i stop pushing myself away from people?

so at the start of highschool i had really low self confidence. i was in this huge friendgroup so i could get away with not saying much but when they split up i blindly followed this girl into the most popular group in school. i sat with them because i had no one else but they were so intimidating and i was too scared to talk. i tried so hard to fit in, i bought them expensive presents, changed my appearance, got trendy stuff, i tried everything. but what i couldn’t change was my mindset, my ocd held me back to the point where i would just sit there and not talk because i was so afraid of doing something wrong. they left me out really badly by doing stuff like making codes, not inviting me places, leaving me in the toilets and had a group chat where they planned to get rid of me that they would text on while i was sitting right there. i still partly blame myself because i know should have just said something and included myself but i couldn’t.

because of them i reached the lowest point of my life, my ocd spiralled and everything just went downhill. after a year of putting up with their bs i realised that they barely even noticed if i left them so i started going to the toilets because everyone would just leave me alone, i said i’d just do it for a week but it got addictive and i ate lunch in the toilets every day for nearly three years. i told myself most days i would stop and go ask someone if i could have lunch with them but i couldn’t do it for some reason, it was too scary and i was just so drained that my ocd took control.

sometimes i wonder what’s wrong with me. i’ve had multiple people tell me that i’m the nicest person they’ve ever met, that i’m funny, even that i’m pretty. i don’t feel that there’s anything wrong with my personality or anything, i’m just too quiet out of genuine fear of being judged so then people assume i don’t want to talk and ignore me. ages ago someone told me that their first impression of me was that i was intimidating and they were scared to talk to me, but i don’t get why they got this vibe maybe it was just because i wasn’t saying much? i just don’t know how to fix that.

as soon as someone includes and talks directly to me, i join in but if they don’t include me and just assume i’ll join in i feel like they don’t want me there and i can’t get rid of the feeling so i just isolate myself and don’t say anything then feel like shit because then i’m getting left out again. after all the time i spent alone, being with people and making an effort to talk enough to be included now drains me so much even though i don’t want it to.

i don’t know if it’s the memories from my past or my ocd but it’s really getting to me and i’m so fed up of overthinking everything. i just think after everything i went though it’s now hard for me to believe that people actually want me there. i don’t know how to stop pushing myself away and involve myself instead of waiting for others to validate me.

i’m going to a new school next month, and i’m really scared that everything is just gonna repeat itself and that i’m gonna end up with no friends. it takes me way too long to get comfortable around people and act like myself and i’m just too quiet around new people so everyone just assumes i don’t want to talk when i do but i can’t get the words out. the minute i start to feel excluded i just shut down, even if they’re not deliberately excluding me but just aren’t talking to me and waiting for me to say something. i seriously don’t know how to break the cycle.

I’m creating a romcom analysis website: what would you like to see?

It’s very much in the early works but I’m planning to create a website where I critically review and breakdown romcoms including psychological, cinematographic, statistical and visual analysis. I’m interested to know what you guys would like to see from it, whether there are any other sections/features on the website that might interest you, or any specific romcoms you believe deserve a deep dive.

Thank you so much in advance!

This is genuinely so odd

Not my video, I hope this is okay (original creator @loriwolfesmusic on tiktok). If you look closely towards the end of the video you see a hand slowly reach up in front of the girl in the red shirt, it doesn’t even look like a human hand to me as the colouring is so off and it has this sort of gold glow? OP claims there was no one else in the house at that time and this was backed up by several relatives/friends in comments. Pretty creepy. Just thought others would find this interesting

How would you feel if your gf/wife told you she wanted to adopt and not have bio kids?

Probably due to my OCD I have this overwhelming fear of getting pregnant and giving birth, maybe it could be solved through therapy I’m not sure but I’m worried this will cause problems in future relationships, a lot of guys I know seem to just want their own bio kids. I’d rather adopt anyway, I just think it’s amazing to be able to give a kid the life they deserve rather than bringing another life into whatever this world is becoming but I don’t know how many guys would actually agree

How does Shakespeare present fate in Romeo and Juliet?

In the 1597 classical tragedy Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare presents fate as a powerful driving force of the play, ultimately leading to the deaths of the protagonists, Romeo and Juliet.

At the beginning of the play in the prologue we learn that the lovers are meant to be: 'star crossed lovers'. This is evidenced by the use of 'stars', as in the Elizabethan era people thought the stars and planets determined their fate, and Shakespeare is reminding the audience of this. However, stars actually never cross paths unless they become a dying, shooting star and this subtly foreshadows the tragic ending of the play. It is interesting that Shakespeare uses 'stars' instead of planets. Perhaps this is because unlike planets, stars do not have fixed positions, reflecting the dynamic nature of fate.

In the given extract, Romeo describes a 'consequence hanging in the stars'. Here the use of the verb 'hanging' emphasises the dominance of fate, implying that Romeo feels his 'consequence' is looming over him. It also works to highlight the idea that fate is an inescapable, unreasonable, overpowering force, as the stars are literally above Romeo.

Throughout the play, Romeo is seen as a conscious victim of fate. This can be seen when he remarks 'O I am fortune's fool!', displaying his awareness and frustration towards the situation. The fact that he calls himself a fool displays the power of fate and how it can lead to destruction as it causes people to turn against themselves.

Later on in the play, Romeo shifts from seeing himself as a victim to actively rebelling against fate: 'I defy you stars!'. This reflects Romeo's bold and impulsive nature as he directly addresses the stars as 'you'. Furthermore, Shakespeare subtly mirrors the warning uttered in the prologue ('a pair of star crossed lovers') by repeating the celestial imagery, reinforcing the idea that fate is unavoidable and a powerful force of nature. The phrase Romeo uses is also rather ironic as we know that he is destined to and will die in the end, ultimately fulfilling the role of fate.

In the given extract, Romeo describes 'some vile forfeit of untimely death', almost predicting his fate. Here, Shakespeare reinforces the idea that fate is an overarching, dominant force of the play. The fact that Romeo calls death a 'vile forfeit' is interesting as he makes the choice to kill himself due to his love for Juliet.

At the end of the play, we see fate playing an active role in both Romeo and Juliet's deaths. Romeo returns to Verona just in time to find Juliet, who appears to be dead. Acting on impulsivity, he drinks a vial of deadly poison, believing it will reunite him with Juliet. Before he does this he kisses Juliet one final time: 'thus with a kiss I die'. Here the use of 'thus' creates a story-like tone, implying that it is now the end of Romeo's story and that this is his fate. Romeo's dramatic nature is clearly evident in this situation, mirroring his characteristics displayed throughout the play. Juliet's last words are also similar: 'let me die'. Both of these 'star crossed lovers' end their sentences with 'die', further reinforcing their tragic fate.

A few days ago, I heard a phone call my dad thought I couldn’t hear. I’ve come to the conclusion that either he’s having an affair or has a daughter I don’t know about who is now having a baby. When I was listening I was confident it was an affair but the next day I started to think of other possibilities. I’m the only one who knows and I really just want to know the truth. Obviously I can ask him but I don’t feel comfortable doing that right now. I’m trying to be as unbiased as possible but it’s really difficult because I want it to be a sister so bad so I need a fresh perspective on this.

The first thing I heard on the call was him talking to this woman about a throat infection he has. He made it very clear to her that he wouldn’t be able to see her soon because he didn’t want to make her or the baby ill and proceeded to have a very long chat with her about his symptoms and stuff, it was all very friend like. However after saying he couldn’t see her soon he told her he’d stay the night in a few days, like that’s pretty soon to me so I’m assuming it’s a regular thing.

Some key things I heard during the call was that he mentioned things like “putting money in the account” which clearly indicates a serious relationship, and asked how their mum and brother are. Either this brother is another secret child of his, or it's the woman's own family who are very comfortable with my dad being around. He also said “At least your mum’s there”. He is likely to be 20+ years older than this woman, and I could be wrong but surely in most families they would not be so accepting of him if it was an affair? He’s not even there most of the time, he spends the majority of the week at our house I know that.

He also asked them not to contact him on social media and to just call or text, multiple times in a very casual tone. This didn’t start any sort of argument so they must know they need to stay hidden. It didn’t seem like a reminder, more like a new thing but I don’t know. I feel like there’s more reason to hide an affair than a daughter in social media but either way he is hiding something from me. He also was saying sorry a million times.

There was no mention of I love you or anything, he ended the call with a simple “bye bye”.

On valentines day this year I heard him making a reservation for two on the phone and my mom was not there so I don’t know what that was. It is more likely to be a romantic dinner here obviously. But would a man having an affair really make it so obvious? He’s not stupid and he genuinely does care for me and my family, and I feel like he is quite a paranoid person in general. Maybe if it is his daughter she was lonely or something because she had no boyfriend and was pregnant.

Whoever this is is currently either pregnant or just had a baby, he told her to call the midwife. My dad has probably been keeping this secret for my entire life. I don’t know if my mom knows but I doubt she does.

I have done as much research into this as I physically can without asking my dad. Here’s what I have: my parents married in their mid thirties. That’s relatively late and more than enough time for my dad to have had kids in a previous relationship. I noticed that my dad set up his business in 1998, halfway through his masters degree. I do wonder if he was needing the money for kids back then, or if the affair is a more recent thing and I'm just over analyzing the coincidence. If it is an affair I’m assuming it’s relatively new and happened after my parents got married so it would have been going on 18 years at the absolute maximum. It did seem like it was this person’s first baby.

As soon as I’m 18 I will be getting a DNA test but for now it’s a waiting game and it sucks. I don’t want to get my hopes up in case he is cheating either.

I feel so lonely and cheated out of a connection I didn't even know was possible until a few days ago. Growing up I begged my parents for a sister and I’ve grown to accept I’ll never have one but now randomly this crazy possibility has come into my life and I can’t cope with it. It also feels a bit odd because I literally created an imaginary sister when I was younger, I told everyone my dad had her before he married my mom and she was at uni, and if this person is my sister and was born around 1998 she fits the bill completely. I’ve been reading a lot about something called synchronicity and it’s really interesting.

But it’s possible I’m just trying to make this theory fit. I’m very very aware of my own bias and how much I want it to be a sister and for it not to be an affair. That’s why it’s hard for me to see clearly in this situation. I literally don’t know if I have a sister or if I am forcing myself to think I do.

As much as I want a sister, I also just want to know the truth and I’d rather know now than assuming it is and getting devastated a few years down the line. Please be honest and don’t worry if you think it’s not what I want to hear, I will cope with it.

Obviously it could be neither, I have no idea. These are simply the only two situations that I feel are likely.

I have exams coming up and I literally can’t focus on anything I need to stop thinking about this but I can’t. I really just want to come to a definite conclusion and have some closure for now so I can leave it for later.

I’m not really in the position to be asking him. We aren’t the closest and I don’t want him blaming the woman on the other end of that phone for me finding out. He is just a defensive person in general and is quite irritable, if I asked him he would probably lie or get annoyed and tell me to leave it.
