This is why ARM won't replace x86 in the Steam Hardware, and you will never see a phone, tablet or probably even handhelds with SteamOS

I have seen many people saying that Valve will create more ARM devices other than the Steam Frame, or even some saying that you will be able to have SteamOS in your phone or tablet, I'm making this post because it is very different from what people think:

ARM architecture doesn't have something as a BIOS, so it's not like you could install SteamOS in any phone, tablet or handhelds with ARM architecture. People don't inform themselves and they see something as ROCKNIX and they think they can install it anywhere, but ROCKNIX has a very limited pool of compatible devices and it takes huge efforts from them to make a new device compatible, so most of the time newer devices are always out of the question.

Valve would face a very similar problem, then you add that x86 architecture is a lot more efficient nowadays, Intel has made a lot of contributions to that field, and you begin to have less advantages for ARM architecture. We may see a Steam Deck with SteamOS using ARM architecture someday, but I highly doubt it, because Snapdragon processors are the ones that are more compatible with Linux, and Snapdragon is abandoning most of its high performance processor market because of Mediatek, Windows, and Nvidia alliance.

ARM architecture will stay in the tablet and phone markets. The best boost that ARM is having right now is Nvidia and Mediatek, but it looks like their new processor will be for a very close ecosystem and only for Windows, and that's no good for PC gaming, it'll be more of a premium processor for heavy 3D tasks and using or training AI models where you can also do some gaming.

So that's it, it's complex, but people need to inform themselves more before blindly believing something.

Any single player, first person, open world game maybe with similar building, crafting systems as Fallout 4?

I thought of Starfield but I only have money to buy it without DLCs, don't know if that's a good idea, don't know if anyone has any other suggestions, it doesn't need to have building or crafting but it must be single player, first person and open world. I already have Cyberpunk with Phantom Liberty DLCs.Let me know which one you would recommend for these summer sales.

Not able to use PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 launch option in game mode for Fallout 4, game doesn't launch needed to change to desktop mode

I was having issues launching Fallout 4, my setup is a ROG Ally X with an eGPU so probably that's why. I found the solution thanks to a user in ProtonDB; launching the game with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 option, but I was only able to do it in game mode, I don't really care that much but want to know if someone knows the reason.

I'm using SteamOS 3.8.11.

People still don't get that a Steam Machine (PC gaming) can't be compared to a PS5 Pro (Console gaming)

The special characteristics that PC gaming (Steam Machine) will always have over the consoles (PS5 pro) are:

1.You won't need to pay any subscription to play online, get games or something like that.

2.You have control over your games, you can access their files, install mods, modify settings...

3.You have control over your system, you can install any app you want, chrome, emulators or buy it from anywhere you like GOG, Steam or even Epic...

That's why it isn't a good idea to compare a PS5 pro (Console Gaming) to a Steam Machine (PC Gaming) because both of those systems offer a totally different experience and a PS5 Pro won't ever be capable of doing those things.

The real comparison would be to compare the Steam Machine to a pre-built PC or a PC build, but that is a totally different topic.

PC Gaming is for mature gamers that really like gaming, Console gaming is for beginners or more casual gamers. There's nothing wrong with both but there are differences.

Why the Steam Machine makes perfect sense an how people don't get the point of why PC gaming is so atractive

I changed to PC gaming when I was younger and it wasn't because it was the most budget option, the reasons were:

1.No subscriptions! I hate to pay every month or so to play online, games, cloud gaming... PC gaming and SteamOS specially is a no subscription environment.

2.You have control over the games you're buying! In PC gaming you really feel like you own your games, you can mod them, set your own settings... Your game is your own to do whatever you like with it.

3.You have control over your system! If you want to install chrome you can do it, you want to install an emulator and play some old games you can do it, you want to buy games through GOG instead of Steam you can do it.

The Steam Machine is expensive for the performance it offers, but it'll let you do all of that, and if you don't like it, then you can build your own, because the people that build the Steam Machine will also support you if you do that, as they stated it in the page of the Steam Machine, because they know the core values of PC gaming:

Gaming in an open ecosystem with no subscriptions!

PC gaming has never been the most budget option, but it is the best way of gaming for those who know.

I feel that recently there's a bigger campaign to promote Windows gaming and Cloud gaming

There have always been people promoting Windows and Cloud gaming. I once promoted Cloud, but after the RAM shortage because of AI data centers I lost my confidence in Cloud gaming.

The point is, I have noticed a recent increase of people promoting Windows and Cloud gaming, and it is crazy, I'm not against Windows, the PC and laptop that I use for work have Windows, but for gaming I use a SteamOS machine it feels better for gaming.

But these people defend Windows like if it was the only OS with the right to exist and use for gaming. Then they go further to say that there are only 2 options either you use a Windows system to do gaming or use a Cloud gaming service. That's insane, how people can be so close minded.

But well, don't know if anyone has noticed the same thing as I do?

What I recommend to ask yourself when choosing SteamOS over Windows and why you should never choose Bazzite

First, don't choose Bazzite, Valve makes a great effort to give support to Xbox Ally handhelds, Bazzite is for those devices that SteamOS doesn't work and Valve doesn't support.

1.The first question you want to ask yourself is; are you going to use your Xbox Ally only for gaming and basic tasks (browsing, videos, movies, maybe some streaming...)

If yes, go for SteamOS.

If not, go for Windows.

2.The second question, do you have any multiplayer games that are out of the question that you will stop playing? There are some multiplayer games that don't work in SteamOS for me it was Rainbow six siege, but I finally decided I could leave without it.

If yes and it isn't supported by SteamOS and you can't live without it, go for Windows.

If not, go for SteamOS.

3.The third question, are you willing to sacrifice having some issues in some new games to give a longer lifespan to your Xbox Ally? SteamOS isn't a bloated OS like Windows. You may have some issues in some newer games, the benefit is that SteamOS has a lot less resource consumption (RAM, vRAM and Storage) than Windows and it isn't bloated like Windows.

If yes, go for SteamOS.

If not, go for Windows.

That's what I recommend to ask yourself when choosing SteamOS over Windows.

Does anyone have been able to test a device with SteamOS and an eGPU connected through Oculink?

I know eGPUs work in SteamOS with thunderbolt 4 port, I have a setup like this that I use. But does anyone have a working setup using oculink instead of thunderbolt port?

Because of how the the SteamOS 3.8 versions have been releasing, it's probable we will have news of the SM next week

Valve has been releasing updates of the 3.8 version of SteamOS every week and today it was released the 3.8.9 version, so it's probable we will get the 3.9 version next week and that version will probably be the one that the Steam Machine will have at release, so I think it's very probable we will also get news of the Steam Machine next week.

The problem with the loss of confidence in cloud gaming related to gaming hardware becoming so expensive

I was a hard user of Cloud Gaming I played with Boosteroid, GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud and even Play Station Cloud at some point, these are some of the reasons reason I lost confidence in Cloud Gaming:

  1. I always knew that I could return to normal (local) gaming if I wanted to, could be due to price increase in all platforms or not enough cloud gaming platforms to make it competitive. But with the price increases in gaming hardware if you choose cloud you're now entirely dependent on it because of the investment you would need to do to be able to get a good gaming capable hardware.

  2. I thought that there would be an increase of Cloud Gaming platforms with time because it has its advantages it's a business a lot of opportunities if you have the money and the technical resources. But the increase in prices of gaming hardware is heavily related to the amount of data centers that are being constructed and these need the same hardware that gaming hardware needs, so I'm not hopeful anymore that there's going to be a new Cloud Gaming platform.

  3. I thought that Cloud Gaming platforms were going to get better (Specs, features,prices...) but for the same reason as the second point it will not.

That's why I lost my confidence in Cloud Gaming and I changed to local gaming again.

Maybe people won't support me; but I would like a "Steam Deck" with the new Intel Arc G3 keeping mostly everything the same 16 GB of RAM and the 800p OLED

The reason, SteamOS is a lighter OS than Windows, it doesn't need more than 16 GB (I built a SteamOS build with 24 gb of RAM and 8 GB of vRAM and it barely uses 8 GB of RAM when playing at 1440p) and more if you're not going above the 800p resolution of the screen. The performance per watt ratio of the newest Intel Arc is incredible so it would mean more performance with a lot more battery life.

Does SteamOS on ARM will be only for the ARM SoC of the Steam Frame or it'll have support for multiple ARM devices?

I want to know, I think because of the times we are living SteamOS should have support for more devices other than AMD handhelds, not saying it should have support for everything, but some support for some other specific devices other than AMD handhelds. I thought maybe Steam Frame would give this with SteamOS on ARM but because of the way ARM devices work it could be that this SteamOS would only work exclusively for the ARM SoC of the Steam Frame. So does anyone following SteamOS on ARM knows something about this?
