Sci-fi 'enthusiasts' who don't actually know the lore, and spread toxic falsehoods about everything being a gotcha, are as bad as sci-fi deniers. There are franchises to this day where it's not an either-or, and people don't start wars over it.

Death's Divide - My Latest XL Hota (Horn of the Abyss) Map

Good afternoon.

This is Niomiah/Geldoph, you may know me for maps such as; May the Meteor Have Mercy, The Day Heaven Abandoned Us, Ash & Mirage, Tempest Nexus and a few others.

After months of rigorous testing, I am proud to announce that my latest map, Death's Divide is finally finished.

This is an XL Horn of the Abyss map in the same vein as May the Meteor Have Mercy, although the progression is slightly different.

The map has 8 players, each with set starting locations depending on the faction. The center is a cursed land known as the Valley of Death where it's crucial to possess a certain artifact to progress without being cursed (This is achieved with the new Extended Event System introduced in Hota's Bulwark update.). There are ways to bypass the valley and get to enemy territory, although I'll leave it up to you to figure out how.

Fly, Dimension Door and Town Portal are banned by default, but Town Portal can be earned via opening a path by completing a certain quest-line.

To make travelling the land less tedious, I included the addition of a "Nexus" which connects the various regions with portals. However these can only be accessed by visiting the corresponding Keymaster's Tent for each land. This means that you're required to infiltrate enemy territory first before unlocking the shortcuts.

Both the underground and the center feature tough battles to keep the sense of progression going even after your starting zone has been cleared.

This is not a challenge map, it is closer in design to classic Heroes 3 maps where you can play at your own pace. Saying that, the computer players do receive bonuses throughout the progression of the game and with the way the map is laid out, this map is not completely beginner friendly.

Most of the map-balancing was done through the Queen difficulty, so take from that what you will.

I am excited to hear what you all think and please let me know if you run into any glaring issues while playing so I can update the scenario accordingly.

This is where you can find Death's Divide:

https://maps4heroes.com/forum/opinions.php?map_id=3129&game=3

I recommend playing the map with the H3 Landscape mod if you want the battlefields to be more immersive, particularly for Dungeon's starting zone (Which makes the biome look above ground during battles) and for variety when battling in the vast underground network. Although this is completely optional.

Do you like difficult/complicated puzzle maps, or do you prefer playing classic maps?

(puzzle map examples: fiery riches, blazing archipelago, ice assault, factory campaigns)
(classic map examples: crimson and clover, realm of chaos, vikings we shall go)

I usually prefer playing classic maps as I tend to play vanilla singleplayer/multiplayer allied scenarios. However the HOTA puzzle maps have cool designs and they have creative enemies, but they stretch out for months and can be pretty annoying with the constant save scumming. So far I've played stuff like Invasion and Ice Assault and I can say they reminded me of original AB campaigns like Dragon Slayer in terms of map guards and structures.

And what is your approach?

Custom HoMM3 Map Generator (Alpha) - Master's Thesis Project. Looking for testers!

Hi everyone!

A friend and I are working on a random map generator for Heroes 3 as part of our Master's thesis. We've been developing this tool for a while and decided to release an alpha version for you to test out (maps are generated using the standard Jebus Cross template):

https://randommap.dev/

It's very easy to use: just enter a seed (or leave it blank for a random one) and click generate (keep in mind that sometimes map creation might fail). After that, simply download the map and open it in your map editor of choice (HotA or VCMI).

We know the generator isn't perfect yet. We still have a lot of work to do regarding balance, object placement, and overall map "intelligence." That's exactly why we care so much about your opinion! If you have a spare moment, please check out what kind of maps our generator spits out and fill out a short survey (the link will appear after generating a map).

We are collecting this data so we can accurately describe in our thesis what the HoMM3 community values most when it comes to map generation. Your feedback will help us verify if our assumptions align with what players actually need. Every single piece of feedback—from praise to constructive criticism of specific solutions—is worth its weight in gold to us!

Thanks for every minute you spend testing this!

Vcmi made it easier for me to explore homm3

Lots of things that made me bounce of original h3 and even hota, I found a fix or I could vibe code away.

  1. I need wasd. I added it and the hot key system they recently added means I can remap keys. Just 1 level of frustration removed. Like why is there no cycle towns and open them button? I added that too.

  2. 2 clicks to move heroes, is a rsi annoyance for me. Luckily there is a 'remove heroes path display' option in vcmi for this.

  3. I'm new and being able to right click stacks and see a strength label is really useful to learn the game. Ie it tells you if you are stronger or evenly matched. No wandering up to some t7 units and exploding because I don't know the game yet.

So far it has allowed me to discover the nice music of the game and less intimidating to try it.

If you wanted to try h3 but bounced of it, now might be a good time to dip your toes in the pool.

How to install Heroes 3 VCMI and mods 2026 guide

The Heroes III VCMI engine is an excellent choice if you want to try completely new towns such as Pavilion, Forge, Grove, Courtyard, and countless other modifications that can be installed with a single click through the VCMI Launcher.

The installation process is very simple and only takes a few steps. The “hardest” part is obtaining the GOG version of Heroes III Complete. A video tutorial is also available. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Obtain Heroes III Data Files

Download the offline backup installers for Heroes III Complete from GOG.com. There are two files: one with the .exe extension and another with the .bin extension.

I highly recommend keeping these offline installation files on your PC, as virtually all Heroes III mods require the GOG version of Heroes III Complete.

Save both files in the same folder.

Step 2: Download and Install VCMI

Download the latest version of VCMI from the official GitHub repository. For Windows, look for the file named VCMI-Windows-x86.exe.

Download the installer and run it.

Complete the installation process and launch the VCMI Launcher.

Step 3: Import Heroes III Data into VCMI

Open the VCMI Launcher and choose your preferred language.

In the next step, select “Install gog.com files”, locate the folder containing your GOG Heroes III Complete offline installers, and select the .exe file.

The game files will be imported into VCMI. During the next step, you can immediately choose several major modifications to download and install. Personally, I recommend Horn of the Abyss and Tides of War.

Step 4: Finish the Setup in the Launcher

That’s it! VCMI is now installed and ready to play.

The VCMI Launcher gives you one-click access to all available mods. You can also customize various settings, such as your screen resolution or graphical filters.

If two mods are incompatible, VCMI automatically disables the conflicting ones. The system also works the other way around, automatically enabling compatible configurations whenever possible. It’s a fantastic feature.

Once you’ve installed all the mods you want, click “Game” in the top-left corner of the Launcher, then click “Play” in the bottom-right corner.

Have fun playing and testing, heroes!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Screenshots from the installation cannot be inserted into the text, so you can find the guide with images here: https://heroes3wog.net/how-to-install-heroes-3-vcmi-engine-and-mods-2026-guide/

Greg Fulton is writing a book about the development of HoMM 3

Greg Fulton, one of the key figures behind the creation of Heroes III and the Armageddon’s Blade expansion, has revealed that he is currently working on a book dedicated to the development of the Heroes 3.

The news was shared during a recent interview with Archon Studio, where Fulton discussed the return of the Forge faction and reflected on his long history with the Heroes franchise.

During the interview, he confirmed that he is focused on completing the “HoMM 3 Recollections” that originally appeared in the Fanstratics newsletters. His goal is to finish the writing by the end of this year and self-publish the book early next year.

For those unfamiliar with Greg’s role in Heroes 3, he worked closely with David Mullich and Jon Van Caneghem and helped shape many of the mechanics, systems, and design decisions that contributed to Heroes III becoming one of the most beloved strategy games of all time.

While no official release date has been announced yet, Fulton’s current plan is to publish the book sometime in 2027. We will be closely following any new updates and will share more information as soon as it becomes available.
