Upcoming AMA | NSW Socialists | Tuesday, 25th Aug @ 4-6PM

Dearest Legends,

You asked for it, so here it is - we're back with another AMA.

Next Tuesday August 25th between 4-6PM (AEST), we'll be joined by NSW Socialists Communications Director Cherish Kuehlmann (u/NSWSocialists), who'll be popping by to answer your questions about the party, what makes them different, their future plans and any other topics you want to know more about.

On the day we'll pin and promote the actual AMA post, but for now, feel free to drop some of your thoughts and initial questions below to give Cherish an idea of what to prepare for.

I'm sure the recent student protests will come up (at 460K+ views this seems to be of interest!).

And as always, The Pub Test, Sub Rules & Reddit TOS are in effect.

C U Next Tuesday

Coles and Woolworths test facial recognition technology

>Coles and Woolworths have conducted tests of facial recognition technology, but it is unclear if either supermarket will be implementing it in stores. It comes after the Australia Financial Review reported both Coles and Woolworths had trialed the technology as part of an ongoing effort to combat retail crime.

>The article said both supermarket giants had "conducted early testing" of the technology. When the ABC asked Coles about the potential of it being rolled out in stores, a spokesperson made a distinction between the use of the term "test" instead of "trial".

>"Coles has not done a trial using this technology," the spokesperson said. "A small, one-off, controlled proof-of-concept test of the technology was undertaken which did not use customer or team member information or data.

>"No decision has been made about the deployment of facial recognition technology."

>The ABC understands Woolworths tested the technology in its New Zealand office.

>A Woolworths spokesperson did not address the ABC's questions on how facial recognition technology was tested or if it would be used in Australia.

Feels like a red hot favourite for a future RC into privacy concerns, stolen user data, etc. In the interim, if you're not into panopticons and Minority Report-style grocery shopping, let your voice be heard!

The Weekly Chin Wag | 17-Aug-2026

G'day Legends,

Welcome to a fresh new Weekly Chin Wag mega thread!

Part of our recent rule changes was to bring in this generalist thread to be used as overflow for content that would otherwise be repeated information or stories in order to keep the main feed as diverse as possible.

It's also a great space to drop your comments, pics, videos, meme's and unhinged rants about any and everything related to 'Straya that might not warrant it's own, dedicated post.

📌 We'll pin the best/most important/funniest comment to the top of the thread each week.

👉 All other sub and platform-wide rules still apply here. As you likely already know, we take an open (!) and relaxed approach to moderation without sticks up our arse. That said, if it wouldn’t fly in a pub, it won’t fly here.

Cheers!

Children, bow down to your Laughing King (of the bush)!

Seriously, our birbs are the best birds. Took an OS mate out on a few bush walks recently and they were convinced that our trees were infested with monkeys. Had to sing the song and everything.

A touching tribute for an absolute champion 🏆

Wanted to share this, a beautiful little tribute to an often unsung champion of the game, who 1000% deserves his praise. Whether you're a Pies fan or not, how awesome it is that we're no longer in the 'tough as nails'/emotions are weak/real men don't cry era?

Goodluck tonight Sidey.

PS: I'm not crying - you're crying.

The negative impact of 'AI' has become a bipartisan issue

Yeah, it's Newsmax, yeah it's performative, but it's also wild just to see both side relatively on the same page on a big issue for once. Feels like we haven't seen that for the last decade.

Since Ed loves to use analogies, feels like a short step to him using a similar visual aid on CNBC to reach even more people?

Is AHPRA secretly mandating that Aussie dentists give each patient a mini-stroke for the lulz? 😉

Anyone else notice the uptick in the amount of anesthetic that our dentist's use?

Can any of our non-Strayan pals confirm if this the case overseas?

Had a filling replaced last year and on the drive home I noticed that I couldn't feel any part of my ear, a section of my neck and at least half of the front of my face - this is after them saying something along the lines of "lets do a double block just to be sure". This lasted a few hours post-visit.

Vs when I was a kid I reckon I felt every rotation of the drill and had a pulsating jaw minutes after leaving.

The Sensationally Sensual Census Mega Thread

My fellow Strayans - a friendly PSA to remind you that Tuesday, 11th of August is National Census Day.

Use this thread for any questions, comments and general thoughts on all things Census & Census adjacent.

This may or may not include Sensis's GENESIS, Censor (2021) and/or Bianca Censori.

---

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this all about?
The Census is a nation-wide survey that the Australian Bureau of Statistics undertakes every few years to help inform the government about important stuff regarding Straya's population - like our age, living circumstances, work situation, etc. The ABS then crunches all that data to generate reports that will help with future initiatives around health care, infrastructure, education, etc. So we recommend not taking the piss on this one. That said, if all 300K of you decide to nominate OpenAussie as your religion, well, there's not much we can do to stop ya.

^(Note: Please don't do that 😉)

How do I 'do' the Census?

  1. Go here 👈
  2. Enter your Census number + password you received in the mail
  3. Fill out the form

Is it compulsory?
Yep.

What if I don't do it?
The ABS will send Joyce, Sandilands and Hughesy round to your place for a chat.

How is the Census developed?
Not sure, but this might give you an insight.

I need help!

Round The Twist theme as performed by Tamsin West (OG Linda). Re-upload with actual audio

Okay so I found the ORIGINAL version of this clip, where you can actually hear Tamsin singing, along with some additional context:

>This video was shot as part of a project at Bournemouth University in 2004.
Produced & Directed by Jamie Wilson & Sam Smaïl.

Was torn on re-posting, but wanted some justice for old mate Linda. She's still got a bloody good set of pipes on her!

Samuel Henderson rocks an impressive Magpie and Kookaburra

Old mate does probably one of the best Magpie impersonations I've ever heard (4:30), along with Kookaburra and Rainbow Lorikeet calls (even better in the pinned comment). Wish he'd drop a Currawong... Good on him for not letting Tourette's or autism hold him back. ✊

Coles to move several hundred jobs to India after deal with consulting giant

>Coles is planning to outsource hundreds of back-office jobs, with many moving to India, after extending a deal with consulting giant Accenture to cut costs in their headquarters.

>The move follows reports that Qantas is contemplating a similar arrangement as major Australian companies try to manage a wave of AI-driven digital disruption.

>The $32.4 billion supermarket giant confirmed several hundred local jobs would be made redundant to tap into “global skills and resources” to deliver “seamless, personalised, digital experiences” for its customers

>“Some work in our corporate workforce will move to Accenture overseas and in Australia,” a Coles spokesperson said. “The partnership will also help reduce costs in order to continue delivering value for our customers at the checkout.”

Sorbent has ended their Australian manufacturing operations

From their website:

>Through Thick and Thin
Life’s toughest moments call for Sorbent’s softest care.
From messy break ups, and days you’d rather forget – we've all been there.
So when the tears won’t stop falling or your nose won't quit running, reach for Sorbent - Australia's tissue to wipe away life's issues.

Wonder if that's what HR said when laying off their workforce? 🤔

And

>Behind every great Australian.
No matter where you’re from or what you do, Sorbent is behind every great Australian, and has been since ‘52. There for all the scrunchers and the folders, the roll-it-unders and the roll-it-overs.
We’re in your bathroom corner, Australia! Side by backside, behind you all the way, giving you that fresh bum feeling to take on the day.

Guess they're not behind us any more... 🤷

Fold (or scrunch) one out for those impacted, and drop any decent Aussie-made alternatives in the comments 🙏
