Schlage Encode Plus Lock Automation?

Since it can’t detect when the door is open or closed, can it be paired with a door sensor that can detect when the door is closed and then set up an automation that says: If the door is closed and remains closed for more than 10 minutes and the lock is unlocked, then lock the lock?

Set up Schlage Encode Plus with 1st Generation AppleTV 4k or nothing at all?

I heard that this needs a current generation AppleTV for full functionality via Thread support, but does it work at all with older AppleTVs?

Is it possible to set it up to just use NFC/Home Key via my iPhone and Apple Watch and not use any HomeKit/Siri controls and then disable the WiFi on the lock (or never connect to WiFi at all) to save battery?

I really only care about using NFC to automatically unlock it as I approach the door. I don’t care to control it remotely over the internet.

Q6LR 2026 model at Best Buy?

Does anyone have opinions on the value of these 55 and 65 inch models at Best Buy? It shows zero customer reviews on the site. Was it just released?

TCL QLR Best Buy 2026 Model?

Does anyone here have thoughts on these in 55 and 65 inch sizes? I can’t find any reviews on these specific 2026 models.

All the reviews I can find are for different versions than the ones at Best Buy.

I’m planning to get these for a guest bedroom and a master bedroom and will be mostly watching OTA TV and free streaming. Will occasionally stream 4K movie rentals.

I was going to get something else from Costco like the Samsung U8000H, but I would also have to pay $100 for delivery through a local delivery service from a Costco warehouse since the Samsung model is sold out online, and I heard that Geek Squad warranty is better than the Allstate warranty from Costco. 70” might be awkwardly large for the small guest bedroom.

$399.99 for a 70” at Costco was tempting though.

Using Passkeys

I set up a passkey on the website and noticed it still prompted for additional 2FA after using it for the next sign in.

The passkey only works on the web (from full PC browsers only; not mobile browsers). You still must use password plus another form of 2FA to sign in from a phone or tablet.

So, there is still no option to delete SMS authentication for 2FA and password reset use even after enabling passkey login.

Does anyone know if they plan to also enable passkeys as an option for mobile login so the account can become fully passwordless for customers who want that choice?

As long as SMS-based password reset is still available to bypass passkey security, passkeys are not fully protecting the account.

It could be worse. At least there is the option to sometimes use passkeys and reduce the risk of password compromise, and I saw that password reset requests default to sending an app notification before it resorts to SMS. So, if your mobile phone carrier account was compromised with a SIM swap, and the attacker immediately tried to reset your AMEX account, IF you were signed into the mobile app and IF you were connected to WiFi, you would see the app notification warning you that someone is resetting your password.

Eufy vs Ring door bell quality, reliability and durability?

I have several year old Ring doorbell Pro that I’m considering replacing with a Eufy doorbell to eliminate the ongoing Ring subscription costs. It’s unlikely that I would get a Homebase because the current high costs of the device plus storage drives would pay for many years of a Ring subscription.

Do Eufy doorbells generally hold up to long term use as well as Ring doorbells? How much functionality do you lose if you use a Eufy doorbell without a Homebase?

Are there any streaming services that download a very large buffer to maintain quality at lower bandwidth or work offline?

Do any streaming services download to local cache so you can watch a 4K movie on your big screen TV at lower bandwidth without buffering or having the video quality downgraded to match the lower bandwidth? What about fully caching the movie locally for the length of the rental period? I need to see if there would be any way to watch 4K content at home with a 5-10Mb internet connection.

How to access TG1682G while in bridged mode?

This the provided gateway from Xfinity Prepaid (actual XfinityPrepaid.com, not NOW Internet).

I woke up this morning with no internet access, but they say they can’t see anything wrong on their end. The gateway has been power cycled multiple times. The 2 wifi lights are flashing.

The wireless router has also been power cycled.

So, I’m wondering if something randomly broke in the middle of the night with the bridge mode setup to the wireless router.

However, I can’t see how to get connected to the gateway to check on it while it is configured in bridge mode. I tried connecting a ethernet cable between the gateway and a laptop, but the laptop doesn’t see a DHCP connection and I don’t know what IP address the gateway would have anyway.

Is there any way to connect to the Arris gateway while it is in bridged mode without factory resetting it?

Can this phone be used on vacation in 2026?

I want to leave my new iPhone at home when I go traveling in South America and only use the phone for texts, calls, photos, plus a password manager and mobile boarding passes.

I need to buy a new case and a new battery before using it, but I’m wondering if airline apps and Bitwarden will work on the latest version of iOS available for this phone.

Best replacement hardwired smoke detector?

I have hardwired Kidde smoke detectors with 9v battery backup. The battery door is on the front and it is super convenient to replace the battery. You just push on the door and the battery falls out with gravity and then you put in a new battery and shut the door behind it. You don’t need to disconnect the smoke detector from the mounting plate to swap batteries.

They stopped making this model in 2023. So, any stores that still have it for sale have old stock that have been aging for 3 years since manufacture.

Is there anything similar that’s still being produced new in 2026? I don’t want to hassle with having to remove the detector from the plate and disconnect wiring every time the battery backup needs replacing. I also don’t want a sealed battery that may fail early and then chirp incessantly until the entire unit can be replaced.

[Landlord - US-CA] Secure ways to rent rooms and screen prospective tenants?

I’m thinking of renting a spare room through Furnished Finder or similar and screening applicants through something like TurboTenant or Baselane.

It’s important to me to screen out criminals and professional tenants that are savvy at pulling off squatting scams and outsmarting the tenant screening programs and credit checks by using fake documents, fake IDs, friends posing as employers and former landlords etc..

What are the best options?

Do US banks cling to SMS 2FA for KYC reasons?

SIM swap risks continue in 2026 and are a much bigger money-loss risk to the customers than they are to the banks.

There are many 2FA methods available that don’t use mobile phone numbers. Besides passkeys, there are other 2FA options such as email OTP, authenticator apps, bank app notifications, and NFC debit cards you can tap to your NFC-equipped phone as 2FA.

It just occurred to me that if the banks don’t verify a U.S. cell phone number, they may feel like they can’t verify the customer is U.S. based. Maybe that’s why they love SMS 2FA so much.

Can’t they use occasional mobile phone number verification for that without also using the mobile phone number for account login 2FA?

Is Solo Cruise in South America Worth It?

I plan to visit South America for the first time in 2027. I’m not sure if a cruise would be a good way to do this.

For instance, are popular tourist destinations close enough to the cruise ports to be visited during the number of hours the ships spend in those ports?

Are there scenic sites the you pass through during the ship’s route that don’t require disembarking to view rather than just endless open ocean?

What kind of budget range for cruise fare plus excursions would be required for a 10-14 day solo cruise with a balcony? I would want to have balcony with a view rather than an interior cabin so I can get fresh air and see whatever views are available without always needing to leave the cabin.

When is the best time of year for South American cruises where you would be least likely to have cruise ports skipped due to bad weather?

Controlling older Z-Wave Schlage Connect lock without Internet or replace?

I have been controlling it for several years using Vera, but Vera is being shut down and replaced with a paid service I don’t want. I don’t really need distant access to control the lock. I was only using the Vera app as a convenience when I arrive home instead of using the PIN code or key. I used the app from out of town to unlock the door for someone only once since I’ve owned the lock.

Is there a good replacement hub that’s simple to set up and pair with the existing Schlage Connect lock that will work with an app off of local WiFi or maybe a Zwave key fob I can use with the lock instead of an app?

Otherwise, I’m thinking of switching to an Aqara smart lock and using RFID or UWB to unlock it so I can be rid of internet dependency for good. However, I have concerns that the actual physical Aqara lock would be less hardened and robust against lock picking and other methods of forced entry than the Schlage.

Do some banks not have limits on ACH overdrafts?

In this scenario, the utility company made an error with a meter reading and debited the customer’s account over 1000 times what the charges would have been if the meter reading was correct. This put the checking account in a massive negative balance. Why would a bank allow an ACH charge to put an account into a 5 figure negative balance instead of declining the charge? Are there any banks that have caps on overdrafts coming from ACH bill payments?

Need to install a new Electrolux or Speed Queen steam dryer as closely to the rear wall as possible

I plan to get either a DR7, DF7 or an ELFG7626BW depending on whether I get Speed Queen or Electrolux appliances.

Part of the decision on which appliances to purchase will depend which ones will fit best in the space.

The existing washer and dryer that are being replaced are smaller (4.0 cubic foot) front loaders that are no longer manufactured in that size and are installed reversed from the layout of the hookups.

I want to be able to install the replacement appliances matching the existing hookups with the dryer on the left and washer on the right. That limits me to front loaders washers available with right swinging door or else (Electrolux or Speed Queen FF7) or else switching to top loaders.

Due to depth constraints, the only way these new larger dryers will be able to fit without blocking a doorway requires the dryer being pushed back as far as possible so I can take advantage of every available inch of floor depth.

Based on the photo, what type of dryer connection can I get that would allow the Speed Queen or Electrolux dryer to be pushed back taking full advantage of the extra few inches of space that recessed vent connection can give?

Should I keep that 90 degree dryer vent offset elbow connected to the vertical duct intake or remove it so that the new dryer tubing can connect directly the vertical intake?

Will there be any way to connect any of these dryer choices without using any transition ducting at all between the dryer and the wall?

Electrolux washers self cleaning drain filter

I noticed that filter isn’t accessible to the owner like other front load washers. You would need to pay for a service call if it ever got clogged.

They are supposed to be self cleaning. So, is it true that they never need cleaning compared to other washers where you may need to clean them every few months?
