Kids Building Boats

10 Kids under the tutelage of couple of boat shop guys built these 2 boats in a week long camp.

Lofting, woodworking, power tools, MATH, Lindseed oil, paint, windows, hatches.. The whole 9 yards.

Pretty cool, if you ask me.

8 oz of ground poppy straw. Now what?

(225grams)

I've made tea with some just steeped in hotish water, but I would like to make a more portable and subtle to take.

What are my options here? And is there a good howto?

Stuck Tractor Post Day!

This is from about 2 months ago when the field was still "A little wet".
Backed into the rush, and then spent 2 days trying to get out.

Neighbors 20ish hp 4wd Kubota pull? Nope.
My Truck in 4wd Low? Nope.

Ended up calling a towing service - the guy showed up with an overland-ed 4Runner and a big winch on the front. Some block and tackle and dyneema line - and we were free.

There is STILL a bunch of shit buried in the dirt there from when I was trying to cram things under the tires to get it to move.

[proud-dad] Kid hitting the trailer dead on

https://preview.redd.it/svtg5joa1hih1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=855a7fb5ccc5736613f64a3c85dd79da2a83fdd8

So we had a bit of a logistical issue..

Who's best at driving the boat? Dad.
Who's the only one who can back the trailer down the beach ramp? Dad.

hrm.

OK. Plan B.

15 Year old drives the boat, I go get the trailer.

He nailed it, and I couldn't be more proud of this kid. He also drove all day while we were setting and picking up pots (1 keeper out of 7 crab total.) .

I'm not quite ready to send him out there by himself (although he did pass the boater card pretty easily.). He can handle the boat when things are going right. Still not convinced he can do it when shit goes wrong.

I friend suggested a 22lr for hunting rabbit on my own property -

  1. Is this a good gun for rabbit (for meat)
  2. Price + Accuracy are my main considerations - What would you suggest for something in the cheap to reasonable price range that still has respectable accuracy?

How to turn 4 acres of overgrown pasture into Ready-to-Plant?

I have 4 acres of what used to be horse pasture. It's been left for 20ish years and was full of blackberries and roses.

I have a 50hp tractor and a brush hog.

I've manage to mow the field down to 4 acres of woody stems.

What are the next steps and tools to get this into something I could use to grow?

EDITS

I live in the "rainshadow" in NW Washington State.

USDA Hardiness zone 8b

I currently don't own any other implements for the tractor, and this thread is sort of intended as a "what do I need to buy to make this work" idea.

Timeframe isn't super important, but it would be cool to get it done in the next couple years. My main goal is that I just want some forward progress. I've mowed it this summer, but if I don't do something else, it will all be back in a year or 2.

I've called our local land conservation district - they're sending someone over Monday to evaluate and take soil samples. Perhaps this conversation will be a lot more productive then.

One more dumb "what does this do?" question

https://preview.redd.it/gmppoe9amlhh1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=ffd3338f392fb9d9884c66f58a958d0554679289

Edit: I'm dumb and forgot the tractor info: 1990 Case IH 485

It's broken, but looks like a momentary switch of some kind. There are 2 contacts inside. And remnants of a rubber housing/button.

Reminds me of a kill switch on an outboard maybe.
I also remember touching one of those as a kid and it shocking the ever-living shit out of me, so I've avoided touching this one :)

But the previous owner said "to stop the tractor you pull the knob" (the one above with the STOP label on it). So I hadn't really noticed this thing down there until just the other day.

This is so much fun!

I'm sure if I did this day in and day out it would get old. But man, as a weekend warrior, this is so much fun!

Have about 4 acres of neglected pasture, full of rush, blackberries and roses. This heavy duty woods 6 foot mower attached to the case 485 is a blast. Driving very slowly with my bucket near the ground to look for foreign objects. There have been a few times the bushes are so tall it makes a tunnel over me as I go.

So far I've lost one lower arm pin (I suspect the cotter got caught and pulled out?). And gone through 10 gallons of diesel (at 7 a gallon, ouch!).

Thinking about crops, or pasture rental, or.. I dunno. It's just nice to be able to see the land I own I guess, too.

My tractor lives here now.

It's owned by the massive pissed off hornets nest under there someplace.

I managed to bail out with only 2 stings on my bald noggin.

[Homemade] Cherry Clafoutis

Cherry season in WA state! Needed something quick for dessert.

Cherry Clafoutis it is!

My pan was a little wide for the amount of batter I made, so it came out thinner than traditional. But still very delicious. Brown edges and custardy center. Think "Cherry filled dutch baby".

These dogs.. I can't even!

Pearl decided she needed a little extra snuggle for her nap today.
I've never in my life had such an affectionate dog!

Are yours like this?

Best race in the Salish Sea (IMHO). Round the county couple years back.

Rounding Patos on the J/105 Dulcinea.

We crushed it the first day. Won by a mile. Shortly after this we popped the spinnaker, sailed into a huge wind hole, and sat there watching everyone in our class finish in front of us.

Ah well. Scenery and crew made up for the annoying defeat.

Having a blast taking new sailors out sailing

But I tell ya, there's a lot more pressure when I'm the skipper with a boat full of learners, vs. when I'm "just the fordeck guy" on an experienced racing crew.

So far it seems there's no flavor of sailing I dislike.

Unless it's raining and there's no wind. Ok, I hate that.

Not sure I'd want to tow it for 300 miles - but

For a 4 mile trip to the boat ramp, all of it downhill from here?

Works just dandy!

Now.. do we trade in the f150 for a sportscar? Maybe.. just maybe.
