Boston Fleet to hire François Méthot, Rochester junior team GM, as head coach

François Méthot will be the next head coach of the Boston Fleet, a source confirmed to the Globe.

The source spoke to the Globe on the condition of anonymity because the deal is not yet complete. General manager Danielle Marmer informed the players of the decision earlier this week.

Méthot, 48, will become the Fleet’s third head coach in three years following the departure of Kris Sparre, who left Boston after one season to take the top job at the PWHL expansion team in Hamilton, Ontario.

Méthot, who hails from Montreal, spent the past three seasons as head coach and general manager of the NAHL’s Rochester Jr. Americans, a Tier II junior team. The team went 37-21 this season, second in the Eastern conference.

The organization claims Fleet defender Haley Winn, a candidate for rookie and defender of the year, as an alum.

Méthot was the Buffalo Sabres’ third pick, 54th overall, in the 1996 NHL entry draft but never appeared in a regular-season NHL game. He played six AHL seasons — five with the Rochester Americans and one with the Portland Pirates — followed by 11 professional seasons in Germany.
