My theory for -A study in scarlet-

My theory for -A study in scarlet-

Good morning everyone, I hope I find you in good spirits. I have always been fascinated by mystery and Dr.Holmes and Dr.Wattson but have only now had time and surpassed enough of my dyslexia to actually read the work. So I have little prior knowledge other than the basic knowledge and some of the monster crossovers like Sherlock Holmes and the house of Dracula. Anyway:

I am reading chapter 3 of A study in Scarlett and am at the scene in which Holmes and Watson have entered the crime scene at the abandoned house and Holmes asks: "you sure that there is no wound?" Pointing at the splashes of which lay all around.

My theory: so, I have no deductive skills. This is just a fun idea as to what may have transpired: the man is well dressed and is middle aged. His immaculate collar and cuffs are remarked but he is described as...well..unattractive to put it politely. He has cards (so far undescribed so I will assume playing cards) and despite having no wounds there is what seem sto be copious amounts of blood amongst the scene.

He is well dressed and middle aged, with immaculate cuffs and a frock coat and tophat, so he is someone of importance or at least high status. Given the group often associated with top hats, let's assume he is a businessman of some sort. He is unattractive and even described as having an ape-ish face so it is unlikely this was a crime of passion. The playing cards in his coat suggest he may be a gambler of some sort. So most likely he crossed the wrong person by possibly cheating at a game because why else would someone go as far as to elaborately murder someone when they could have just shot them on the spot? This was personal.

So, this business man has a possibly secret lust for gambling and gambled against the wrong person. Earlier in the book when Watson met Holmes, Holmes expressed joy over breakthrough of his in forensic science.

What do I think happened? This man's killer was so distraught over this game in which he was likely cheated out of a lot of money that was denied to him: that he decided to murder him not with barbarism like a hatchet or gun, but through the stealth of injecting him with an unknown substance that caused him to convulse violently and bleed profusely before succumbing to the release of death.

Due to it being a syringe, there appears to be no wound on the body as the puncture is too small for the investigators to see. I think Holmes will use the test he created upon their first meeting to reveal what was injected into the victim

Don't spoil it for me please but due let me know if I'm on the right track or not!

A runestone I drew

I have a notebook I store my Norse myth, history and futhark notes in and I added a little doodle of my own rune stone. I'm still learning so forgive me if the grammar or spelling is not correct!

It is supposed to say:

Trolls dwell here. I call you to dwell here and speak.

The gods here. The Jötunn. Us. Ride together and be wise.

Trøll buá ðangat hér, ek kalla Yðr I buá hér I mæla. Þá Aessir ðangat. Jötunn. Okkar, riða saman í vira vitr.

This is a good learning moment. Let me know if there are any corrections I need to make!

What EXACTLY is the Green Knight?

In the 1300s Middle English epic "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" we are introduced to the titular towering green character known as the Green Knight. Without spoiling anything, the identity itself of the Green Knight prior to the revelations: peaks my interest concerning his nature. While yes he is basically a figure meant to teach a lesson, I wonder if his actual origin is that of a nature deity or spirit like Cernunnos, Pan, Jörð or Artemis. I think it would be a bit boring if he were just simply some tree that was enchanted to become humanoid. What do you think?

EDIT: I should clarify as some people seem confused: I mean what is the Green Knight's origin WITHIN the story. Not what inspired the story

Trying Rise!

I decided to buy Rise+Sunbreak and make a bit of a spectacle out of it! I organized my desk and made apple tea with cinnamon sugar. I have 3 Ultimate, Generations ultimate and Iceborne (and use to have Tri 😔). So I figured why not give Rise a try too! So far I'm liking the aesthetic I'm seeing. It's Monster Hunter but just a little cuter and leans more heavily into Japanese culture & Shintoism and Kami. It's also a little more colourful! This is gonna be relaxing

South Jersey club

Hey everyone. Some time has passed and I'm hoping there might be a HEMA or fencing club/community down here in South New Jersey? Preferably Atlantic County? If not, I'm also hoping to find local people who are interested in HEMA that maybe wanna get together and train or spar. It's pretty lonely down here and it kinda feels like I'm the only one in town who even knows about the hobby.

If anyone knows anything please share! (Yws I used the HEMA club finder. Still nothing)

Looking for members for a black metal band

Hey everyone! I'm a 25 year old vocalist and guitar player looking for a bassist, drummer and another guitar player (as I prefer to just do vocals) to start a black metal band with. I'm mostly doing this for fun but have interest in doing small shows and venues in the future. My vocal inspirations are Sadness, Advent Sorrow, Ofdrykkja, Behemoth and Deafheaven. If you're interested in partnering up for a band, feel free to comment or just reach me here on reddit.

Requirements:

Must be 21+

Already own your instrument

Actually practice and be able to do band meet ups

I'm a Norse pagan, ask your best questions

There is a lot of religious discourse going on in the world right now and I think this is a perfect opportunity for people to ACTUALLY talk and have any misconceptions they hold about another group be debunked. So I'm here, as a Norse pagan, to answer your questions and hopefully clear up any misunderstandings about us and general paganism that might be floating about!

Norse or British folk horror

Sacred rites, Norse spirituality, nature, isolation. I've already seen the Ritual, Midsommar, The Northman and Hagazusa.

*Can you guys stop spamming -the ritual-? You're not being funny. No one is laughing. You're just being highly obnoxious and stealing a comment section from people who have something meaningful to post. Seriously. Grow up. I've blocked over 30 people now and I'm about to just delete the post. You aren't the funniest person ever. You're just cringe and showing how much of a loser you are that your idea of peak comedy is just trying to be as obnoxious as possible like a YouTube over reacting loudly to the slightest sound in a horror game.

Hauberk problem solved!

So I bought a hauberk a few weeks ago but I didn't realize I had become an extra large. So the hauberk wouldn't fit me. I tried. It was an awful struggle. Then earlier today, I remembered my gambeson has lacing holes on it and I have a tool box. So I used my pliers to open the rings and remove the sleeves. Then I used some old twine I had laying around and laced one of the sleeves to my gambeson. There was enough space in the rivets to also lace on my pauldron! Since it worked so well, I'll be doing the right arm on Monday! This also makes my set easier and faster to get on since I have fixed my pauldrons and soon both maile sleeves to my gambeson!

Did soldiers decorate their gambeson?

During the medieval period (mainland Europe) did knights, men at arms, bowmen and other military personnel decorate their gambesons? I do not exclusively mean heraldry. Did people wear some kind of patch or maybe paint something on their gambeson? Or was decor exclusively for flags and tunics and shield crests?

I have my gambeson here and finally got some new pauldrons to attach to it via arming tassets. But I'm curious if soldiers have been recorded decorating their gambeson. I mainly ask about gambesons because well, you can't put a patch on steel plate haha and I dont think painting the plate would go well either.

Yesterday's haul!

I now have a bit more availability (and affordability) to venture to my local bookstore. Yesterday, my friend and I decided to head over and get some books we had been looking at last week but decided to come back for another time. I'm excited to dive into this.

I bought some pretty thick books. The legend of Zelda: history of Hyrule. This book goes in depth about the lore within the Legend of Zelda series as well as concept art and developer notes. I'm new to the LOZ series and this book looks like it'll be fantastic!

Next I picked up a compilation of Norse myths and legends. As someone who is a practicing Norse Pagan, this book is definitely one that I needed to get my claws on. Stories are a major part of our belief system. The cover is sick as well! I have a smaller, shorter book of Norse myths but in hindsight I see it as a bit of a children's book. Plus it was written by...neil gaiman..yikes.

Lastly I snagged a book that contains various stories of Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson. everyone knows this dynamic duo but I only just developed a taste for investigative mystery and deduction.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to make some hot tea with honey and crack open these books throughout the day : )

What would you rate my haul? What did you get this week?

Religious harassment

I practice Germanic paganism. As joyful as I am in my faith, I never put it in anyone's face. Yesterday, my friend and I decided to go to the bookstore. It's a local, wonderful, cozy, peaceful bookstore with a café tnat I've been going to for years now and it feels like home. But so quickly, my excitement yesterday was ruined by a christian trying to convert me.

I was over in the fantasy section looking at a very thick book about the production of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy and I was in awe of it. I was born a Tolkien fan. I know his whole life story, niche facts about him and the other authors connected to him such as his close friend and war buddy: CS Lewis.

A slightly older man, probably late 20s or early 30s approached me and asked me how long it takes to tie my boots. He was trying to be funny and I laughed with him. We started talking about Tolkien but very quickly, as in not even 3 minutes into the conversation, he began trying to tell me that Tolkien was a christian and that he converted CS Lewis to christianity. He began lamenting that there are no more author's who write "with christ" and he tried to gode me into a theological discussion and explain how the world needs to turn to Jesus. Equally as quickly, I corrected every point he made about Tolkien: he was not a christian, he was Roman Catholic, he did not convert CS Lewis as CS Lewis was already a christian, and Tolkien never wrote LOTR as a way of indoctrinating people into any Abrahamic religion as he did not like religious allegory nor was he a fan of converting people or using subliminal messaging. I made these corrections a bit aggressively as I am easily disgusted by people who try to hijack Professor Tolkien's literary work and image for their own religious or political agenda. Especially to indoctrinate others.

When I made these corrections, the man, who was dressed like a missionary, got very awkwardly quiet. Then he started bothering me again after I moved further away from him (he followed me) and then blatantly just began preaching to me about the word of god, salvation and shit. I shut him tf down and then reported him to an employee.

So to any christian or anyone of a christian denomination who reads this: stop. Stop asking why people don't like you or why people don't wanna talk to you, when you spend so much of your time harassing people. Injecting your religious views where they don't belong. Lecturing people. It is not your place. It is not your place nor is it your job to preach at people, convert people, tell people what and who to believe in and tell them their religious path is wrong. It is not your place. You aren't enlightening anyone, you're not "saving souls". You are just being an asshole while also making yourself sound like you are living in a state of religious psychosis.

Your harassment, stalking and especially bullying and damnation of other people because of your religious supremacy views: is why people dislike you. It is why people distrust you more and more each day. No one hates you for being a Christian, people dislike you because you try to subjugate everyone around you. You try to police everyone else. While simultaneously crying victim when people criticize you for it.

Stop

Buhurt fitness

I'm hoping to some day soon get involved in Buhurt through the local team. I'm physically fit but I do have A LOT to work on. Workouts, food etc. How much does physical fitness (beyond the obvious) play a role in Buhurt in your personal experience?

Do you have Buhurt specific workouts? What does your diet look like? How do YOU train?

Writing a Witcher short story

Hey everyone! I'm VERY new to the Witcher universe. 1 and 2 sucked for me tbh but 3? 3 is BEAUTIFUL. I got so hooked that now I want to write a short story about a Witcher of my own. But I have some questions I need answered before I write this so that my story will be accurate to the logic and structure of the Witcher universe.

\*Are there evil or immoral witchers? I know Vipers are seen as morally ambiguous but I mean are there records of actually evil or at least criminal Witchers that even other Witchers would not call brother or sister?

\*Are ALL witchers sterilized or is it just some of them are?

\*Are Witchers limited to longswords and knives as their main weapon or is it within their martial traditions to also use a shield or axe or bow?

I might have more questions later

Medieval armor misconceptions

So, when it comes to wearing medieval armor during a zombie apocalypse (of any variety) I see A LOT of people grapple to many misconceptions and just straight up false information about armor all in an effort to claim that it would be a bad idea. I am here to dispell these misconceptions. Here is my armor (new pieces on the way). I also attend renfaires, am an aspiring Buhurt fighter and I have been studying the medieval period for a long time.

"Knight armor weighs hundreds of pounds"-

No, it doesn't. If it did, no human would be able to wear it. Also, during the medieval period, regardless of what land you fought for as a knight, cavalry or infantry or archer: people were not all wearing the same identical armor. People wore what they could afford. So armor weight varied from person to person depending on what you could afford, what you chose to wear, what material the pieces were made from etc. Some people wore full plate armor, some wore padded gear with maille over it. In my experience, I'd say maille weighed more than the average breastplate or cuirass. There were all kinds of armor. Steel plate, maille, gambesons, brigandine and more. There are also smaller pieces that most people outside of the history nerd community don't know about such as couters and standards. All of these pieces are pretty light, even together, they still on average when worn together will come up to about 70-90 pounds at most. When distributed throughout your body, the kit doesn't weigh much.

"You're a tin can waiting to be opened"

Humans have a decent bite force, zombies are probably stronger. But either way, a Z is NOT biting through a a thick helmet, maille coif, hauberk (maile shirt), gambeson, tunic, steel plated leg armor with both maile and padded chauses under them. Also, a direct punch from a fist covered with a maile mitten enough times can put anyone down.

"What about heat?"

Yes it is true that historically, soldiers in armor fighting in the summer, did overheat. However, we have many modern methods of temperature regulation that can be applied.

"You can't run in it"

Actually...yes I can and so can you. Like I said, armor does not weigh as much as you think it does and as long as it is put on correctly: it does not get in the way of your mobility.

If you have more questions, please ask rather than just assume or base your perceptions on fictional work : )

Had a "It's behind me isn't it" movie moment

So last night, I was in the highlands trying to collect Shamos scale +. I forgot what area I was in but I was carving some shamos I had slain, there were a lot to get through and there was a natural platform with vines directly above me. A small one. I'm carving them and it's so peaceful and quiet, but then I heard movement. I figured maybe it was just some kelbi or Tzitzi Yaku roaming about. Then I heard a deep, rusty snarl and heard hammers falling above me. I slowly looked up and saw it was an enraged Deviljho. I BOOKED IT TF OUT OF THERE and it chased me longer than normal. Usually after you leave the area, the monster turns around and stops chasing you. The Deviljho snapped and charged at me with exceptional ferocity, as if it were personal, THROUGH 3 DIFFERENT AREAS STRAIGHT THROUGH. I performed some impressive dodges but almost got gobbled up so many times before a damn Bazelgeus showed up and both distracted it but also added to the danger. It was fun, exciting and intense haha. It was like the Thanator chase scene from the first Avatar movie
