At what point in history did people start self-harming by cutting themselves?

I assume there have been people who self-harm all throughout human history, for various reasons and in various ways.

But at what point did cutting one's own arm in lines, in response to emotional pain, become a common way of doing this? How did that "classic way" spread to become what we now mostly recognize when talking about self harm?

PS sending love to all those who struggle with self-harm. I wish it upon you you'll find some better coping and feel loved!

Restarting after a study break...how?!

Hi! Uni student with exams in a week.

I've been able to properly get up in the morning (thanks to the alarmy app) and often even actually properly start studying for the day.

However, as soon as I take a break, I cannotttt restart anymore. I'll be like studying 1.5 hour in the morning, procrastine my restart, and then 1.5 after 10pm because I'm mad I barely did anything during the day. I don't expect hours on end of course, but this way I will fail majestically (and I cannot this month).

I don't plan (tried many ways, never worked out, I just study for the amount of time my concentration works. Often about 1 hour, sometimes less sometimes more.

When I take a break, I always say to myself till when, but when that moment comes, it never works out to actually start! I have an extension which blocks non-study related sites duiding the day, but I work around it and watch series, surf randomly etc., just all kinds of things.

I constantly tell myself to just fking start at those times, but I never win against my brain.

It's causing me serious trouble right now.

So, anyone got ideas for someone who can study quite long on end, but then doesn't manage to restart, unless sometomes in the late evening (and gets frustrated because of all this)?

Thank you!

Writing upside down

I want to be able to write on an upside down paper. It's cool, can be useful, and is a great excercise for your brain too. But how can I properly start to learn this?

I got off a bus and a kid said "finally"

I have Tourette's, my tics are very noticeable.

The kid (about 9) sat next to me and was copying my tics throughout the ride, but he was also playing a videogame with his brother so I wasn't positive enough about the copying to say something about it. I did give a few annoyed looks.

A little later I got up for my stop and the kid said "Finally!". It wasn't directed at me, I guess more to himself, but it was definitely loud enough to be heard.

Intellectually, I can perfectly cope with it. Tics can be annoying or weird to others who haven't seen it before. Even more when one doesn't recognise Tourette's, especially a child. That's not weird in itself.

Understanding that still doesn't erase the emotional impact though, it sucks when someone is visibly glad to have you leave.

That was my rant, hope you have a great day! 🫶

Not a lot more to it. It just frustrated and saddened me.

How do your compulsions come to be?

Hi! I've been diagnosed with OCD for years, although the last few years I've been doing better. I'm wondering something: how do your compulsions come to be, how does your mind go from "I'm afraid x will happen" to "I will do y so x doesn't happen" and then actually doing it in a specific way.

As for myself, I sometimes have very random compulsions (like tapping certain things a certain amount of times) for an unrelated obsession/fear and sometimes they seem more logical, but of course excessive for its actual use (like using a certain object). It's been some time since I had an actual fully new compulsion and I'm not sure for myself but I've been wondering for months how other people experience the way their compulsion originate.

Have a good day!

Social closeness/hierarchy "blindness"

Hi!

I'm looking for relatable experiences and possibly some information.

The subject is: not really caring about hierarchy, causing atypical social closeness.

My therapist thinks I might be autistic, I'm really not sure if that's likely, but this experience she's seen me do is one big reason why.

It's not really blindness to hierarchy or context, because I do often realise something might be tricky socially and I do really think about how to say something etc, but it's like I don't feel the need to not do it, I don't feel like I really care about someone being in a position where it's considered overly amicable to do something.

Some examples of what I'm talking about:

* I'm a volunteer board member of an organisation and went to a day with all kinds of professionals from other organisations (who were not volunteers). I never met them before. At the end of the day I was helping tidying up some things and I asked for the organisers if they like hugging and then I did. They liked it haha.

* I'm a university student and sometimes I have chats on LinkedIn with professors like "I came accross this, it made me think of X subject of class" while they're actively my professor.

* Same, but with questions about them. Like what made them decide to study x subject, how long until they finish y research etc. No strange questions, but I believe it's not typical to have a LinkedIn private chat in that context. Also sometimes it's to tell them at the end of their classes that I liked xyz about their teaching style.

Same also in high school. When a teacher send out an email saying she's sick and won't come in that day, I would respond wishing them well and sometimes sending something extra like "here's a nice song to listen to" (not exactly that, but shortest to explain and same vibe).

Or during covid and online classes, I often was the only pupil in the class who had their camera on because I know teachers liked when our cameras were on (which I know cringe about with awkwardness, being the only one).

* On my internship asking my colleagues about their political views

* Asking my therapist for a selfie, asking the janitor in the building for his name and starting a conversation, etc.

* If I have a conversation with a stranger on the train (usually there's a reason, like they started or I helped them or...), then I very often ask for their social media

Stuff like that.

I kinda feel like I do pick up on hierarchy (that's not the best name, it's more like people in certain contexts seem to require a specific way of behaving towards, also when it's not necessarily a hierarchy), but I don't posses the ability to not still be very close.

At the same time I do, because if I didn't care about hierarchy at all, I would ask for a hug from everyone I meet, and I would ask even more personal questions on internships etc, but I don't do that. But maybe still more than most neurotypical people haha, I'm not sure tbh.

I'd like to learn more and also recognise myself in someone's experiences, feeling like there are others who have a similar experience.

Thank ya!! 🫶

Overstimulation: light vs sound

Hi!

I don't get overstimulated by noise or touch very fast, but I do by light. It doesn't often cause issues, but it can be annoying sometimes. Light flashes in real life or when watching a video can be almost painful, and some days (often when already tired) I just had too much light and make my room dark with sun glasses (which I haven't found an ideal thing for yet when wearing regular glasses).

I'm wondering if anyone experiences this too?

When hearing about overstimulation I most often see things about noise and headphones being an important item (which is great!) and sometimes the combination of being very sensitive in general with sun glasses, but not often do I see visual as the biggest one in itself.

I'm also kinda wondering what makes one sensitive to what kind of sensory input. Like, why am I sensitive to light?

Have a nice day!

Little ways to happiness

I'm generally a positive person, but sometimes hearing all things going on in the world get the best of me for a while and make me very frustrated and sad.

I'm looking for simple ways to boost happiness.

Things I already do:

* Going outside, walking

* Talking to other people, not drowning in being alone

* Listening to happy music

What more can you add?

Findig simple dimple fidgets?

Hi! I want to buy this kind of fidgets (supposedly called simple dimple), but it seems hard to find...

I also specifically would like the ones that pop hard, like where you have to pop against a resistance (thick silicone) and it gives a big pop.

I'm in Europe. Does anyone know where I can find these? Second hand platforms are fine too, I don't have a lot of money. Thanks a lot!

How to recognize an actual police officer from an impersonator?

Like many, I have learnt to ask for an identification badge, when wanting to check.

But how am I supposed to know if it's the actual thing?

Making a card that looks like an identification badge to someone who has never seen one, doesn't sound too difficult...

My teenage sister is showing some concerning eating behaviours: how can I help best?

TLDR; what are good ways for an adult sister to react to a teenager with eating difficulties, without making it worse.

Hi all!

My (23F) sister (13F) is showing some behaviour I'm concerned about. She sometimes skips meals (by saying she's not hungry, has a bellyache etc) and also started fitnessing. On the application form she checked losing weight as one reason to do it (she has a healthy weight).

This is making concerned. She has had to deal with some rough things already (a few things I'd call traumatic). And she started puberty rather early, including insecurities in general and about her body. Since a half year, she sees a therapist.

These behaviours are regular enough to be spotted by me (and my mom) and have been going on a few months. They're often not there too, where she eats a healthy amount, snacks etc. She doesn't seem to do compensatory behaviours or binge.

I'm pretty sure she doesn't have an eating disorder right now, but she does show signs that can either be a puberty phase, or the start of an eating disorder. I want to react in the best possible to hopefully stir away from the possibility of it becoming an eating disorder.

How can I best react as her older sister? I want to be open with her about it, but I also don't want to put a big focus on it, as I'm afraid this will trigger it more and give it a bigger place in her head.

I have tried to talk to her about it, but she doesn't like to talk about herself, let alone things she finds difficult and she often declines talking about such a topic. This is also the case when I start to talk about it when we're doing something else (playing a game for example). Should I try more to talk about it or better not? What are your experiences?

And then when she doesn't want to eat. Do I/we (with my mom) let her be? Do we force her to come sit with us, and if so, also to eat just a little? Up till now, this hasn't been succesful. At such a moment she sits in her room and tells us to leave her alone.

I'm really not sure what the best way to go about all this is... I luckily don't have personal experience with eating disorders, but as a teenager I severely self harmed for a long time, so I understand how this kind of coping mechanism can work, as well as how for some it's a short experimental thing and for others it becomes a severe issue. I have always made sure to never negatively refer to someone's or my own body. My dad however has often told us we're too fat (we don't have a lot of contact with him anymore) and my mom is amazing, but she has always had difficulties with her own weight, causing her to negatively speak about her own body quite regularly.

Thank you very much for thinking with me on ways to handle this. All ideas are welcome! 🫶

[Contest] Forget Manneken Pis, what's the weirdest statue you've spotted in Belgium?

Belgium is quietly one of Europe's strangest countries when it comes to public sculpture. We all know Manneken Pis. But we also have chubby bronze figures climbing up walls in alleys, noses stuck on facades, monuments to fictional dogs, giant vegetables, and dozens of oddities no guidebook will ever mention.

Time to hunt them down.

The challenge: post a photo of the weirdest, strangest, or most unexpected statue or monument you've stumbled upon in Belgium. The odder the better.

How to enter:

- Post your photo as a top-level comment on this thread

- Tell us where it is and, if you know, what it's supposed to be (or your best guess)

- One entry per user — pick your best find

A few ground rules:

- Original photos only

- No Manneken Pis, Jeanneke Pis, or Het Zinneke. They've had their moment.

- Nothing political or commemorative in a political sense

- Keep it family-friendly

How the winner is picked:

Community upvotes decide. Voting runs for until Thursday 30 July. Whoever's entry has the most upvotes at that point takes it.

The prize: a shiny new 🗿 Weird Belgium Legend user flair, and permanent bragging rights as the person who found Belgium's strangest statue.

Bring on the weird. Wallonia, Flanders, Brussels, the German-speaking corner, we want to see something from everywhere!

MeDirect: seeing recipients?

Hi!

I use MeDirect and I can nicely find what amount of money was transferred on what dates, but I can't seem to find anywhere the bank number or name of the recipients. In CVS or PDF this doesn't seem the case either.

Does anyone know where I can see this information? Thank you. :)

Online university classes in French?

Hi!

My French is pretty decent, more so in understanding than in writing. I'm also a university student in psychology in a non-French area.

I'd love to better my French while also learning things I'm interested in and that will be useful in my study and job.

My own university offers lectures in my native language and some in English, no French. Classes can often be rewatched on our uni platform.

Does anyone know of any platforms where (francophone) uni lectures are free to watch for people who don't attend that university? This about subjects related to psychology (in the broad sense), not about the French language itself for example.

I've found some things online, but they all seem to be old and with barely any materials.

I'd fully understand if this doesn't freely exist, but one can only ask!

Merci beaucoup :)
