PSA: Turn off connectivity assist in iOS 27 unless you absolutely need it

15 Pro Max

89% battery health

I was getting only 3-4 hours SOT after IOS 27 update

Turned off connectivity assist and I get 7 now

You have to turn it off in two places, WiFi settings and in each network you connect to

It was keeping my cellular antennas constantly active even on WiFi, destroying my battery life

DON’T TALK TO ME OR MY SON EVER AGAIN

Ham is an 18-pound black cat built like a small bear and convinced he's a dog — all lap, all lean, no dignity.

Monster is about 12 weeks old, give or take. I pulled him out from under a Tesla at work in early August, covered in fleas and ticks.

Anyone else have some anecdotes on 15 Pro Max battery life/SOT on iOS 27?

I get like 4 hours SOT if that, battery health is 90%.

Yes, the indexing is long done.

Pretty sure I was getting 6 or more on IOS 26. But I never kept track because I always ended the day >40%.

Now I'm hitting <40% by 3PM

I don’t remember my episodes much anymore. But my SO tells me in the morning she had to wake me because I yell for help.

I get them once or twice a week. I dont see anything scary or anything like that. But I can’t move and I yell for help in my sleep. My SO will hear me and wake me up. When I say yell I mean I mumble it out because my mouth/tongue is mostly still paralyzed

not sure why it happens. I’m active, healthy, I run every day. I try to get at least 6.5-7 hours of sleep every night. I’m 34 and I’ve had sleep paralysis for at least 15 years. But the yelling for help and to wake me up thing just started a couple years ago.

Anyone else on Nvidia get pageflip wedge (black screens) when waking from sleep?

4090, 9800x3d, cachyOS

2x 3440x1440 165hz monitors, 1 1440p 60 hz monitor, 1 4k 60hz TV

I was getting pageflip wedge maybe every other time I would wake from sleep. Finally I said fuck it and dropped back to 595 driver and pinned it there. This worked without issue for a few months. But then last week there was kernal, kwin, plasma updates etc. and the pageflip wedge bug came back even with the nvidia driver pinned to 595

Doesn't happen every wake. But often enough to be annoying. Have to reset with button.

I updated everything just to see if there was a fix yet, including the nvidia driver to latest. But it's still happening.

So I either have to live with it or go back to pinned 595 and an earlier snapshot from a couple weeks ago.

Curious how many other people are dealing with this?

I want to come back to Android after 3 years on a 15 Pro Max

...but I am worried about Google's upcoming changes to app verification and their general stance on privacy

Considering either the Fold 8 or S26 Ultra

I like the Fold 8 a lot...my brother got one. But I am the kind of person who keeps phones for 3 years and I'm not convinced a folding phone will last that long without issues.

I am also concerned the camera would not be good enough.

I know the S26 Ultra would last with no issues, but I feel like my use case would be pretty well suited to the Fold 8.

I read a ton with kindle app/google play books. I don't use social media besides reddit, no short-form vertical content at all. No instagram, tik tok, facebook, snapchat.

I watch a lot of Youtube documentaries and tech/science videos. I like to emulate games though I have a steam deck oled for that, so I'm not sure how much gaming I would actually use it for. I work in IT and would use Slack/Jira a lot.

The main reason I want to switch back to android is to have revanced again, and full access to the file system, as well as DeX.

I run Reddit and YouTube in Safari with Ublock extension and some add ons and it works great to block ads...but the native apps are still more ideal IMO. But if google breaks revanced and stuff with verification changes, it's pointless to switch to another walled garden.

I am trying to wait and see exactly what apple releases on the 9th...but I think I am pretty set on switching back to Android if it's nothing special.

Which device would you recommend?

How many of you are waiting for the IPhone Ultra (Fold)?

Just curious.

I am pretty OS agnostic. I use Linux at home, Windows at work. I have been switching between android and IOS for years. For the last 3 years, I've been on 15 Pro Max.

I don't like how locked down the file system and sideloading is.. But I can't deny that my IPhone has been perfect for these 3 years I've owned it. Not a single scratch, it has never frozen, it has never lagged. It just always works.

I had ordered a Samsung Z Fold 8 and cancelled it a day later, because I am waiting to see what the IPhone Foldable will be like.

I'm still undecided, I may switch back to android or I may stay on IOS and keep my watch and airpods. Will see what the Fold and Pro phones are like.

So I am waiting for the fold. Is anyone else?

Kitten with ticks on his face - Update 3

https://preview.redd.it/at41gg9dacih1.jpg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e4a80f40ad1be35ecd26b9ec403a81763c6c972

Just wanted to update everyone. He's doing great! Still in isolation but we stopped finding little seed ticks, all the fleas are dead and gone. He's basically 100% bounced back after only a few days.

Still continuing with iron supplement and antibiotics as well as eye drops. Today he will get another bath to make sure any of the bite sites on his body are clean.

He loves to play fetch and climb onto my shoulders. He should be ready to come out of isolation and we can start introducing our other cats slowly in a week or two.

Update on the 8 week old kitten with dozens of ticks on his face

https://reddit.com/link/1vi02aq/video/euhanx0v8yhh1/player

Kitten is happy as a clam. As I mentioned in the previous post, we pulled all the ticks off over the course of 3-4 hours.

Clean bill of health. We have iron supplement for anemia, eye drops, and upper res. antibiotics. First round of deworm done. As well as capstar which we have to give for a couple of days. His poor eyes were irritated from all the ticks and there was discharge but it has almost entirely cleared up now.

FeLV/FIV negative.

We are still finding those tiny tiny smaller than a grain of sand ticks falling off of his body, the first couple days it was a lot. This morning I only found 2. So he is almost entirely tick free. No more fleas.

I've never seen a stray kitten so comfortable being handled and so happy to be around humans before, so I'm wondering if someone dumped a litter. I thought I heard another kitten yesterday walking in to work but I checked a few times and wasn't able to see anything. So could have just been me.

Lots of energy now, lots of zoomies. He loves to run around us in circles while we sit on the floor and make little noises.

He doesn't like to be cooped up in the bathroom, but we still have to isolate for a couple weeks because we have 4 other cats. We try to spend as much time with him as we can. I will sit on the floor and read or play my Steamdeck with him.

So he is happy, we are happy. I'm glad we are able to give him a comfortable life and a loving home.

We are still deciding on a name.

Found a kitten at work, advice for ticks around eyes?

Poor thing must have put his face in a nest. Vet could not get us in until Monday. He is a happy playful little thing and loves toys and purring, eating and drinking

we applied flea medicine for his size, but didn’t realize these are ticks and don’t want to double up on any OTC medicine without a vet.

we are going to remove as many as we can, and I’ll call the vet tomorrow and see if there have been any cancellations if we can get in sooner.

any advice? He’s about 8-10 weeks. Seems healthy otherwise

Edit: We got 99% of the ticks off his cute little face. Going to let him eat some and get some rest. I'll try to get some more pictures tomorrow but his face and eyes look so much better already. I posted a progress pic when we were about 60% done earlier if you scroll down you should see it. Thanks everyone!

Edit Edit: It's the next day, we got him in to the vet at 2PM today because someone cancelled. They said my fiance did an incredible job with the ticks! Kitten is a little anemic so they prescribed a supplement for that. As well as eye drops and upper res. anti biotics. Kitten is healthy! He goes back in 3 weeks for more deworm

Few months on CachyOS and I have zero desire to touch Windows again

It's been about a month and a half since I last booted into Windows 11 for anything. CachyOS has been my daily driver the whole time.

I've tried switching plenty of times before across a bunch of different distros and it never stuck. This time it did, and I genuinely have no urge to go back.

Setup:

  • 4090
  • 4TB 990 Pro – Windows 11
  • 2TB SN7100 – CachyOS

So now the plan is to nuke Windows and clone CachyOS over to the 990 Pro as my main drive.

There was a fair bit of custom config to get here, but honestly I enjoyed the process. Some of what I set up:

  • Login script that auto-applies my OpenRGB profile (dim purple)
  • Downgraded the NVIDIA driver to 595 from 610 and pinned it so it doesn't get bumped. 610 had an intermittent KWin pageflip wedge on wake from sleep that left me with black screens. 595 has been rock solid.
  • rclone mount for Google Drive
  • Another login script that runs after wake to refresh display brightness. One of my ultrawides would randomly get stuck at 30%.
  • Gave the login screen (SDDM) its own copy of the KWin output config with only DP-1 enabled. Fixed a weird issue where the greeter was showing multiple user picture/password boxes on the same display.
  • PowerPanel running at boot to talk to my UPS so the machine shuts down gracefully if there's an outage.
  • 360W power limit on the 4090
  • CoolerControl for the case and CPU fans. It couldn't see my Gigabyte board's fans at first because the in-kernel it87 driver wouldn't bind (ACPI resource conflict). Fixed it by installing it87-dkms-git and booting with acpi_enforce_resources=lax.

Among other things. But it's finally basically perfect.

I also just love how it looks. The transparency effects, the revived Oxygen theme that came back in 6.7, the effect where windows shatter into pieces when you close them. It's all really neat.

PSA: Gamescope HDR breaks on KWin 6.7 (not your nvidia driver)

If your gamescope games lost HDR after updating to KWin 6.7 (desktop HDR still fine), it's not your GPU driver

KWin 6.7 stopped advertising the sRGB transfer function and gamescope ≤3.16.24 wrongly treats that as "no color management," so it falls back to SDR. You'll see bExposeHDRSupport: false in the gamescope startup log.

It's gamescope issue #2221 / PR #2222; until that's merged, rebuild gamescope with the two-line sRGB check removed from WaylandBackend.cpp.

let me know if anyone would like detailed instructions...I didn't want to break any rules pasting LLM output

GPU renders frames. My chair renders me functional after 8 hours.

https://preview.redd.it/tr40keylrt8h1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=453a18c24954754a2f06eaf9ec7b4a68c7cf74b4

Seriously after a year with my Leap V2...I will never, ever, ever go back to a "gaming" chair or some other office chair. There is a reason they are touted as the best office chair you can buy and my only regret is I didn't get one sooner. If I can help a single person avoid annoying back/neck pain etc then this post was worth it.

I did not get a new Leap V2. I got a refurb from BTOD. I think Crandall is another brand that does the same thing. They rebuild the whole chair, replace the gas strut, replace the padding and upholstery, etc. You can't tell it isn't brand new and it was half the price of a new one.

Highly recommend. I have not had any back or neck pain since switching, and I was struggling with longer sessions working or gaming for quite a few years.

HMX Moonlight vs Boba U4T

these moonlight are just great if you’re looking for a tactile that’s not completely silent. they are more muted or subdued, but without any of the mushiness and scratch that you can get with a lot of other “silent” switches.

big fan so far. they are no less satisfying to type on than the U4T but MUCH better for work environments

u/ZoteTheMitey — 4 months ago

Really struggling with Rhene. Tips here?

I am at the beginning of the game. I got one HP upgrade.

I just can't make it through the whole dungeon without dying to rescue her!

37 attempts. the farthest I've made it is the room with 3 guards

I had less trouble with the High Halls gauntlet in Silksong!

Any tips or advice here? I am not super familiar with old school zelda style games like this. I want to play it, but so far I find it very punishing. I don't want to use modifiers.

The perfect muted tactile switch IMO

My HMX Moonlight order just came in.

I was looking for something nice and tactile, with a decent bump. But this is for work so I was looking into silent tactiles. I just didn't want them too silent, or too mushy feeling.

The moonlight is neither. It's perfect IMO for this use case. Checks all my boxes.

Muted, but not silent

Not mushy feeling

Not scratchy

not too light, not too heavy

I would highly recommend them to anyone that wants a quiet tactile that's not necessarily 100% silent
