This suuuuuuuucks. Just a bummer through and through. I enjoyed his YouTube essays and his presence on MinnMax. whyyyyyyyyyy does it have to be like this. blergh.
(to be clear, I'm bummed out about learning this about Jacob, not about the way MinnMax reacted.)
As a member of r/DollSewing you of course know that dolls are a creative hobby. But do you sometimes feel like in doll spaces the creative aspect is almost drowned out by endless consumerism and hype? I’m guilty of it myself, I know I have to regularly remind myself to not be so focused on just buying, buying, buying new dolls!
/
This is why I created r/WeGotDollsAtHome,
a community for doll hobbyists with an anti-consumerist bent!
/
In our little corner of the internet we…
- … don’t talk about recent and upcoming doll releases. Let’s disengage from the hype machine!
- … don’t post "Look at what I bought!"-type posts.
- … do talk about dolls we’ve owned and loved for a while!
- … do show off the things we created ourselves: restyles, reroots, and repaints; repairs and restorations; DIY dolls and doll clothes; photo shoots and dioramas… really, all types of doll creativity!
/
If you too could use a break from the endless hype cycle… if a slower, more mindful, more creative approach to doll collecting sounds like your cup of tea… or if you simply want another platform to show off your marvellous DIY doll projects… come on over, give us a try!
And thank you so much to the mods of r/DollSewing for allowing us to promote our fledgling sub!
Only $40 you guys, what a steal! /snark
I know this is a long shot but here goes nothing. I have a distant memory of a Tarot deck I saw as a child in a book store, and I'm trying to find out what deck that was. What I remember about it:
- it existed in the 90es
- it was angel themed, titled "Angel Tarot" or something similar.
- The Death card showed an angel that was hiding their face behind a black veil
- I remember the illustrations looking "like medieval oil paintings"... but this last point could be incorrect. It's a very old memory, and I was just a child.
Yeah, I know it's not much. But who knows? maybe someone knows what I'm talking about. Cheers!
I want to start taking pictures of my budding Barbie collection. what kind of pictures? I honestly don't know yet. but do you have any tips to get me started? should I get a ring light, and if so, what size?
hey there! can you help me identify this doll? he's 1:6 scale and appears to be a male, light-skin black doll with a printed on beard and a tiger tattoo on his right biceps. I feel like he might be an Integrity Toys doll, or one of the brands inspired by them. what do you think? cheers and thank you! 😙
I'm looking for an articulated body (MTM or otherwise) for Fashionistas #235 (1st picture). I'm thinking Looks #17 or BMR1959 Neon Overalls could be a match. Can someone confirm this? or do you have other suggestions? ty!
sometimes I get to be the lucky one!
also, let's not lose perspective here... €70 for a barbie doll is still a lot of money, in my opinion. but given that this is one of my grails, and given what kind of prices he usually goes for... I'm very happy ☺️
low-key feeling guilty because I'm an out-of-box collector and this could potentially make an in-box collector very happy. I would have been happy with just the doll, I don't even need the clothes, let alone the box. oh well.
kinda want to give him a beard. but I will practice on many, many other ken's until I'm 1000% confident before attempting any modification on this one. he's so precious 😊
I was going through my parents attic today, mostly sorting out childhood toys, deciding what to keep, what to sell, and what to toss. Found many nostalgic childhood treasures, including my one and only Polly Pocket. A little surprised to find it in such good condition, it even still has both figurines! it's so lovely. I'm taking this home and displaying it amongst my plants 🥰
I want to say "my ex, with whom I had been in a relationship for 10 years" to indicate that I'm talking about a serious, long-term relationship albeit one that's over. But I'd like a snappier, less wordy way to say it.
I know you can say "my boyfriend of 10 years" but I don't think you can say "my ex of 10 years"?
Is there a phrase for what I'm trying to say here?
Thanks!
Bought my 1st Barbie as an adult 2 months ago. Did I go a little crazy with my Barbie spending between then and now? Why yes, yes I did 😭 but it's ok, it's still within what's reasonable-ish for my budget. And most of this is thrifted, which also makes me feel better. Now it's time to slow down a bit though 😅 eventually I'd like to have a collection of 10-25 dolls.
obviously there's still a lot to do. Don't have stands yet, and don't have a dedicated display space. I don't have a lot of clothes yet either, so there's room for improvement re my styling. and most of my dolls don't have articulation yet. But there's no rush, and I'm so happy with my little collection so far!
I also splurged on a He-Man Ken 😱 I will unbox him eventually and have him join the crew. But for now he remains boxed, for delayed gratification reasons.
one tip I already have for other beginners, get a metal comb! I bought a very cheap metal comb and it works so much better than plastic combs, totally worth it.
Cheers!
my old trusty DS 4 better stay fully functional. like hell am I paying for a subscription.
anyway, if someone does try it out, do let us know what you think!
I thrifted this faux fur coat and I'm thinking about dyeing it pastel pink. How would you go about it? I know most fabric dye doesn't work on synthetics... 🤔 and I'm scared acrylic paint would make the fibers clump together. is there a kind of paint that would work? maybe permanent marker?
So, there's this site, which appears to be the official (?) Xian Xian store for dolls and clothes.
But I also see Xian Xian products on Ali Express, and at least one YouTuber has talked about XX and AE as if they were the same thing.
So, what's the deal here? Are Xian Xian and Ali Express the same company? Or is AE a platform and XX sell through them, as welll as through their own store? Or are the XX products on AE fake? Do I get better quality if I order through the official XX store rather than through AE, or is it exactly the same?
If someone understands the situation, please explain! Thank you!
only tangentially related but I thought this was interesting if you enjoy contemporary art and art phototgraphy.
(I'm not associated with the artist or the museum, it's just something I came across.)
What I'm trying to say:
Are there any students? No, there aren't any.
How many TVs do you have? I don't have one.
without aucun/aucune:
Il y a des étudiants ? Non, il n'y en a pas.
Vous avez combien de télés ? Je n'en ai pas.
with aucun/aucune:
Il y a des étudiants ? Non, il n'y en a aucun.
Vous avez combien de télés ? Je n'en ai aucune.
Are these all correct, or are some of them incorrect or awkward?
Thank you! ☺️
Hi there! I'm new to all of this. At this point I'm not trying to paint faces, I just want to improve the hair of some Ken dolls with molded hair. is there a kind of paint that will work without primer or sealant? Cheers!
I had a few Barbies as a child but I was always low-key embarassed about it because I'm a guy. I'm in my early 40es now and I bought myself two Barbie dolls. Because why not? They're just two basic playline dolls. But I love their faces, I think they're really beautiful! Next I'll be getting them some stands and better outfits. Cheers!
I always felt drawn to Barbies and I'm low-key thinking about becoming a collector.
I would not be the kind that buys fancy collector editions and keeps them in pristine condition, and maybe doesn't even unbox them. (I respect that kind of collector! It's just not what interests me.)
I intend to buy cheaper dolls and 2nd hand dolls, maybe modify them, and put them in different clothes, possibly make some clothes myself.
if you are a collector, is there some advice you have for me? what are some things you wish you knew before you became a collector?
And more specifically, is there something I need to know about matching heads to bodies? does every head fit every body (as long as the gender aligns) or is it more complex?
Thanks, and cheers!
