100% 3D printed HHKB + trackball

I’ve been working on this for awhile. Shared the keyboard a few months ago but finally found time to finish the companion trackball.

It’s based on the ploopy adept. It’s also Bluetooth and I might tweak the firmware so it pairs to whatever the keyboard is paired to. Buttons need a little more refinement but I’d say it’s 98% finished.

designed low profile ploopy adept to go match my keyboard.

I designed my own HHKB style keyboard a few months ago. The standard ploopy adept was a little uncomfortable to use when paired with the keyboard. So I spent some time designing something that paired a little better with it.

It’s a steel 34mm ball with custom static bearings. It’s technically Bluetooth but I think I need to check some connections on it.

The buttons need some refinement for sure but overall I’m very happy with how it turned out. I’ll share the STLs when it’s finished!

Just binged season 5, thoughts on Carmy’s ending. (spoilers)

I loved the whole thing but I thought it was weird he went for an internship at an architectural firm, to me it felt obvious that they were putting him on a path to become a writer by publishing his journals.

Going all the way back to season one it was obvious he was more at peace drawing and journaling, and sharing those with people. And at the end with DD reading through them during the “final” service, it felt so clear that that’s what was next.

I’ve got a 20 hour flight coming up, taking my pocket, what games should I take?

My pocket has gotten very little attention for the past year so i’d like to take the opportunity to play through a few games.

I’m primarily looking for something story-driven. I love the metroid games but also Zelda. I’ve heard a lot of buzz around Mother? I’m also open to indie/homebrew titles.

Accidentally quit social media by upgrading my phone.

My old phone was on its deathbed so I finally upgraded to an iPhone Air. In the process I forgot to transfer my Authenticator codes before wiping my old phone.

In doing so, I’ve lost access to some apps and services. that I now need to jump through hoops to get back, Instagram being one of them. Coincidentally this was the last meta platform I was hopelessly addicted to, and now I’m locked out forever and couldn’t be happier.

Debating switching from an aging 14 pro to an Air, would I see better battery life?

It’s getting to be time for me to upgrade and I think I’ve aged out of needing to have the top spec phone and mostly want something lite a comfortable to hold, which is what is pulling me to the air.

That said, one of the main reasons I’m feeling the need to switch is the aging battery on my current phone. I’m currently at 20% and it’s only 3pm, would a new or refurbished air be a step up?

Sold all of my gear and upgraded to a Q3.

We’re moving in a few months so I’ve started getting rid of a lot of my stuff. I had a lot of camera gear that was beginning to age and go unused, so I sold a lot of it on eBay.

The plan was to get a Q2 but just as I sent out the last one, this guy popped up at my local Leica store at a reasonable discount. Zipped right on over and picked it up, excited for our future adventures.

Selling my HHKB studio with keyrative KAT caps

I’ve been faulting this keyboard for years but now that I’ve started designing my own I figured it’s time to give it a new home!

Including the caps I’d say the BIN price makes it a pretty good deal, but feel free to make a bid!

Jump on a preowned Q2, or hold out for a Q3?

My local camera store has a preowned Q2 for a good price and I already have some store credit with them. Should I jump on it or hold out for a preowned q3?

So what’s up with the DSA in SF?

I was passively “involved” with the DSA during Bernie’s 2016 run, but fell off after that to focus more on my education and career. Now that I’ve put down relatively strong roots here in SF, and with the strong wind the DSA has been seeing, I’ve been inspired to get back into it.

So I started doing some digging and it just doesn’t look like the DSA is doing as well out here as it is in other parts of the country. So what gives? I’m asking in earnest as I tend to think pretty naively about these kind of things.

Custom designed, fully 3D printed low profile “HHKB” w/ Bluetooth

A couple months ago I set out to create a fully 3D printed keyboard that fit my taste. I wanted something low profile that I could easily slip into my bag, but there wasn’t any existing HHKB style keyboards that fit my personal taste. So I designed and printed everything from the keycaps to the PCB.

Some features:

- Bluetooth running ZMK
- multi profile support
- gateron ks-33 low profile banana switches
- promicro clone MCU
- “double shot” keycaps

I’ve got a few more tweaks to make, the bottom chassis has actually been the most challenging part to design and still has a few things to improve.

Let’s gooooo

I was foolishly hoping for an q4 2026 window but I’d say q1 2027 and an extra 25 miles of range on the base model is a fair trade.

Trying to design my own keyboard. Chassis keeps warping.

I’ve tried a number of things, thickness, printer settings, adding ribs. I just can get it to remain flat.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Printer settings:

- Bambu labs H2D
- Polymaker PETG
- 0.4mm nozzle
- Bambu Studio
- default settings + 3 wall loops

Has anyone gotten it to work with starfield on steam deck?

I have my deck docked and the controller connected via the puck, but starfield doesn’t recognize it. I’ve tried all the tricks but nothing seams to be working.

Loving my X4, where are yall getting books?

I found a repo of Oxford’s Very Short Introduction series so I’m making my way through that. I also bought a couple books on Kobo but to my dismay, they’re DRMed.

Convinced my wife that this should be our next car. So pumped.

I’ve been driving the same beat up Honda since 2015. I’ve put a lot of miles on it but it’s been showing its age and we’ve been itching to go electric. I’m an avid DIY/maker so the slate really speaks to me.

I made the reservation when they announced, and when I got the preorder email I showed my wife the configurations and the price projections and she was immediately sold.

I haven’t been this excited for a car since I bought a geo metro off Craigslist at 19. Can’t wait!

What the hell is going on with San Francisco FedEx?

Literally every time I’ve had something shipped to me via FedEx they’ve claimed they “attempted delivery” and uploaded a a blank photo or a photo of some other street. Every time this has happened I’ve been home, FedEx never showed up. I’ve had to physically go to the distribution center in South SF and pick up my package three times now.

This has never happened with UPS, DHL, USPS, or Amazon.

Edit: just looked it up and the South San Francisco location has a 2.2 star rating on Google with a ton of folks reporting the same issue.

Edit: after multiple calls with FedEx I went in and canceled the order and told the seller to handle it with FedEx.

The Go gen 3 is Polaroid’s best looking camera

It’s not its best by far. I still wish they’d find a way to cram in autofocus in some form. But goddamn that body design is by far the best looking camera I’ve seen in awhile. Really hope it starts a trend in industrial design.
