So smooth

Got my Camry in April. I just had to drive my wife’s Honda minivan for the first time since then. I have driven tens of thousands of miles in this van. But now compared to the Camry it feels like I’m inside a wooden roller coaster. Don’t discount how smooth the Camry is.

"They've been playing well. They've been playing well for a while now."

THIS the hype video? "They've been playing hard."

What a sad state of affairs that's the best thing they can pull from the broadcast. Not even a Nadal walk-off call.

This is the Rangers equivalent of Jill Biden post-debate, "And Joe, you answered ALL of the questions."

At least they got us to football season.

New screen time controls ready for prime time?

I've been running the beta on my iPhone 17 most of the summer. Now that school is starting, I would like to take advantage of the new screen time/parental controls on my daughter's iPhone 16.

Is that feature fully baked in and active as it was presented at WWDC? I haven't seen or read much follow-up on it throughout the beta cycle.

TLDR - if I install the iOS 27 beta on a kid's phone, can I start taking advantage of the new screen time features?

Is it time for surgery?

Over the last two years of dealing with this, I’ve had multiple MRIs and X-rays, along with physical therapy and PRP (I posted about PRP here and still get a lot of replies to it).

On a good day, the pain is a persistent groin ache that makes me aware it’s there. On a bad day, it’s significant but still manageable. I currently take Celebrex daily. It's not debilitating yet.

My official diagnosis is right hip labral fraying and partial tearing with combined cam- and pincer-type hip impingement.

My surgeon said recovery would depend on what they find: about three days on crutches if the labrum only needs to be cleaned up, or roughly three weeks if it needs to be repaired with anchors.

Either way, I’d need physical therapy twice a week for several months.

The first doctor I saw two years ago—a well-known hip preservation specialist—said I was too old for arthroscopy but too young for a replacement. I’m now 43 and in relatively good shape. I’m not an athlete or runner, but I do exercise regularly.

After getting second, third, and fourth opinions, I’ve been told arthroscopy is still an option for now. However, if the joint continues to deteriorate, I may eventually no longer be a candidate.

FWIW, I have already hit my out-of-pocket maximum for the year, so having the surgery now would be virtually free. I don't want finances to drive this major decision but I can't ignore it either.

Do I have the surgery now while a scope is still possible and the financial timing is favorable, or wait until the pain becomes unbearable and potentially face a more involved surgery—or even a hip replacement?

For anyone who has faced a similar decision, what ultimately helped you decide?

Contacts after branch retinal vein occlusion with macular edema

About six weeks ago, I woke up with pain and blurry vision in one eye and was diagnosed with a tertiary branch retinal vein occlusion with macular edema. It was treated with an injection—not nearly as bad as it sounds, I promise.

The swelling has gone down significantly but hasn’t completely resolved. My retinal specialist said it could take several months to go away completely, and I may need another round or two of injections. (before and after shown)

In the meantime, wearing a contact lens in that eye becomes uncomfortable after a few hours, and my vision is still blurry even when the lens feels comfortable. My vision with glasses is fine.

I wear daily lenses and am mostly using them for a few hours at a time at the gym or while doing yard work. Once they become uncomfortable, I take them out and toss them.

I have a follow-up with my optometrist in a few weeks, followed by another appointment with my retinal specialist the week after.

Has anyone else dealt with this after a BRVO? Were you eventually able to wear contacts comfortably again? Did you need a different lens or prescription, or did you stick with glasses until the swelling fully resolved?

Brother HL-L2370DW no longer accepting 3rd party toner?

I’ve had a Brother HL-L2370DW printer for maybe a decade. Except for the toner that came with it, I’ve always used third party cartridges without issue.

I replaced the toner about 3 weeks ago. Everything worked fine. Until yesterday. Now I’m getting a no toner detected warning. I’ve removed and reseated it several times to no avail.

Did it update itself in the background to only accept OEM toner now? If so that’s a big bag of bullshit.

Are there any hacks to get around this? I don’t have an OEM cartridge around to steal the chip off of.

Thanks, ill hang up and listen.

Realistic recovery - FAI and shredded labrum

After 2 years of dealing with this pain, including documenting PT and PRP here, I think I'm ready to go under the knife.

I have FAI and a "shredded labrum" (not torn).

My surgeon described recovery as follows:

"If I just have to trim up the labrum, then you'll need crutches for 3 days. If I have to anchor it, 3 weeks. No brace either way. Then PT twice a week for 3 months."

Does that sound realistic?

Best physical therapy in west Plano?

This is my last resort to avoid hip surgery. I’m searching for the best physical therapy facility in the west or central Plano area. Over the past couple of years, I’ve visited Clair’s three times, each time for 6-8 sessions. While the therapists there are friendly, I didn't feel adequately challenged during the sessions, as most of their clients are older, and they didn’t seem accustomed to having someone like me, who's middle-aged and already in good shape.

Ideally, I'd like a place where the therapist is dedicated to me throughout the session, vs working with multiple patients at the same time.

So what are your recommendations?

First road trip

I bought a brand new XLE in April. Coming up on 2K miles. I’m taking it on its first road trip next weekend.

What do I need to know? What mode should I use? Talk to me about cruise control. I have adaptive on for daily driving.

Is the wireless phone charger enough to actually charge the phone while being used for CarPlay or does it just maintain current levels?

Basically tell me what I should know to get the most out of this vehicle on the open road.

Dave’s black shirt and grey pants.

So does he have a tour bus full of these or is this his stage costume that gets cleaned (hopefully) every night?

It’s like the Seinfeld episode where Jerry dates the girl who always wears the same dress.

Car Audio Diagnostic

My new teen driver inherited a 2017 Hyundai Tucson from a family member. It has very low mileage and is mechanically in great shape.

The only issue is that there’s no audio coming from the left-side speakers, front or rear.

Last week I had a CarPlay head unit installed at Best Buy, hoping the original radio had a loose connection that the new install would resolve. No luck.

Then I called Earmark, and they thought it might be an amplifier issue and referred me to someone who specializes in amp repairs. I called, and this guy, on the other hand, thinks it's more likely a speaker or wiring issue.

At this point, I’m just looking for a reputable person or shop that can properly diagnose the problem and fix it, because Olivia Rodrigo only playing out of the right side of the car isn’t cutting it.

When did apple start replacing batteries and not the whole watch (AppleCare)?

I sent my daughter’s Apple Watch SE (first gen) in for a battery replacement as it got the dreaded “service needed” message. With this model six years old, I told her we’d most likely get a newer model back (probably the SE 2).

Consider me surprised that we got back the same watch with a note that battery had been replaced.

When did they start doing that vs sending out refurbished models instead?
