had to pack away most of my books but... what do you have to say about me based on my current and next reads?

Hi everyone :) Longtime lurker, first time poster. Would love to hear what you have to say about me based on my current read – "Dr Zhivago" by Boris Pasternak – and my next reads, being:

  1. "Twilight of the Eastern Gods" by Ismail Kadare

  2. "The Testaments" by James Frey (which I'm reading on a recommendation from a friend)

  3. "The Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie

  4. "Vellum: Book of all hours" by Hal Duncan

(PS. sorry if this isn't allowed. I'm hoping to move soon, have enough space to unpack all my books, and finally have a bookshelf.)

best coloured/natural/curly hair salons?

Hey friends. As the title says, I'm looking for a coloured/natural/curly hair salon to cut, dye, and set my long type 3b hair.

Areas: Musgrave, Morningside, parts of Durban North

I'm in desperate need of a revive! My natural curls mean a lot to me. I've spent the last few years bringing them back from years of neglect and damage and don't want to chance it by just going to anyone.

TIA 🤍

Just ate Indomie for the first time...

I owe several people apologies for not trying it sooner. It's even better than my favourite Samyang Buldak (Quattro cheese) – and a fraction of the price.

Only thing, I tried Mi Goreng Hot & Spicy and either my heat tolerance is now higher than I realised or this isn't actually that spicy 🤔💭

Doctor Zhivago slump

I jumped into Doctor Zhivago to have context for Kadare's Twilight of the Eastern Gods (which I will be reading next). I truly enjoyed the first 100 or so pages. It was so dynamic and beautifully written.

But now at around the 150 page mark, I find myself slogging through. It's quite boring and the writing (or translation) has also lost a lot of its charm and character.

I'll still push through and finish it, regardless of how long it takes, but I hope that it picks up and I can start enjoying it again.

What are your thoughts about Doctor Zhivago?

YA horror novel about a well

Hi everyone. It's been years since I read this, so my memory is fuzzy. As I remember it...

It's a book about a boy who finds a monster in a well. The well is in his family's vineyard. He has a girlfriend. At one point, they are on her porch and she mentions giving up something for Lent.

EDIT: It may have just been a voice that he heard from from the well

does the desire to be loved ever go away?

It's so easy for my friends (also lesbians) to date, be wanted, romantically pursued, and to be... well... loved. I just get lusted after, over and over and over and over. And when I actually like someone, I get rejected or ghosted.

I wish I didn't want to be loved, ladies. I really wish I didn't want it.

Reputable/trustworthy dry cleaner

Hi friends. I have a few heavy coats that I need to send to a laundromat. One of these is a floor length leather and fur coat that I'm TERRIFIED will get damaged at the laundromat.

I'd really appreciate any recommendations around Overport, Morningside, Musgrave. Something reliable and also affordable 🙏🏻 💗

Pride?

Hey friends 🤍 Just looking for Pride events or anything about the Pride march? I feel like everything is pretty dead this year – understandably so though with the current state of affairs. But if you know of any events, please hook a girl up.

Is this a bok or duiker? [hillcrest, kwazulu-natal, south africa]

Hi friends, any help would be appreciated :)

u/pommygranates — 3 months ago

what that mean

Woman I have a crush on said she heard me saying I would be at this event and knew that she had to come too. She... remembered our last time meeting, though it had been months ago... told me which days she'd be available for future events so we can catch each other and chat more.

Buttttt she's also just a really friendly person and I don't want to get my hopes up.

can i block ads in an app without paying?

A calorie tracking app I use everyday now has really intrusive ads that make using it quite annoying and inefficient.

I've tried other apps but none are as good. I want to keep using this app but I also don't want to pay for premium as it's out of my budget.

Is there a way to block the ads? Or do I just suck it up?

movie where a guy turns into light

Hey 🤓 this is another movie from my childhood. I want to say it's from before 2014. It's possibly a horror movie. At the end (?) of the movie, the guy lays down in a field and turns into light. At least that's how remember it.

Any idea what movie this could be?

in your opinion, what's the best vegetable atchar/pickle brand?

Happy Sunday friends 😁 Of course we know that the best atchar is made by an Indian aunty whose spent 30 years perfecting her recipes, but what's the best out of the stuff we find at the shop?

Currently working my way through a bottle of Pakco hot vegetable atchar and not only is it not that hot, it's also quite bland.

Tangentially related, but Miami mango atchar has always been my dad's favourite. I don't really like it though.
