(England) Currently off work. What can I tell me new neighbours to avoid embarrassment.

M/41 (get told I look much younger)

I have severe mobility issues on my right side due to a car accident 3 years ago. Up until three months ago I continued to work (electrician) at my 'normal' rate but looking back I should have reduced my hours and I was just 'pretending' i was 'fine' and could still do what i used to.
I ended up ended up having a severe mental breakdown and can barely leave the house now due to anxiety and my mobility just adds extra strain on leaving the house. My wife has been AMAZING and supports me when im having bad days (emotionally and physically)
My doctor and therapist has said I need to take time out and not be so hard on myself.

Sadly, during this time we had to move (Old landlord was selling up) and I have moved into a property owned by my friends father. Just before moving two of our neighbours (who weren't very nice tbf) kept making jokes at my expense. Normally along the lines of "Have a good day at home? I'm paying for it". It was a 'joke' that had a really nasty undertone to it. to cut an already long story short it made me feel like absolute shit.

Since moving in I barely go out or even venture into the garden. The ONE time I went into the back garden my new neighbour popped his head over the fence and started chatting. he was lovely etc but seemed VERY focused on my financial situation. I managed to change the subject (Well, my dog did) so didn't have to answer.

Apparently two of our neighbours (from my friends dad telling me) are planning on coming around for a cup of tea (id rather they didn't lol).

I don't want to say I am off work or go into my disability and issues, especially when im hoping to return to work next year.
Does anybody know what I can say? My wife said "You should say you sell things on vinted" or "You do online electrician courses". However, my anxiety is worried they'll want to see my 'store' or my webpage etc.

Does anybody know of any other jobs I can say I do that don't require me to leave the house or them check up?

Any other ideas except "mind your own business you nosy bastard" lol.

Mopping isn't 'cleaning' my flooring.

Please don't judge as i feel I may be being a bit dopy.

I moved out for the first time and the flooring in our kitchen is lino. Every time I mop it it doesn't 'clean' it. I have to get on my hands and knees and scrub. I have a back issue which makes this kinda painful after a while so it's not ideal.

Everybody I know how this type of flooring and just mops and it's sparkling. What am i doing wrong?

I have followed some online tips and none of them seem like it helps.

My mop and bucket - Had it purchased for me by a family member who swears by it.

My floor cleaner - I was told by a cleaner than this is an amazing floor cleaner for a mop and bucket.

I then clean the mop head in the washing machine (no fabric softener and only very veyr mild detergent.)

How i mop:
I will 'scrub' the floor with the mop and this above liquid. Rinse the mop and go back over it. I will do this once a week and use a soft brush and flat mop every other day.

While it gets off the surface dirt it still looks really grubby. Its not until I get on my hands and knees and scrub with that it looks clean.

Its hard to see but you can kinda see it. Its much more visible in person.

Any tips or advice? :(

Additional:' Out front room is the same but the mop cleans it a little better but it still looks grubby.

Gilbert - Is this the only time we got to ALMOST see the real Gilbert?

Ive just listened to a collection of Gilbert shows (He's honestly my favorite guest, hands down) and there is one episode where a girl calls in and tells Howard about a time she took Gilbert back to hers and he just sat there doing Psycho impressions (Mother! mother!) before she took him to her room where they made out. She then asked him to just hug her all night and he apprently called her a cock tease and left. She then made some very unflattering comments about his appearance and behavior.

You can tell Gilbert isn't happy with this story and gets very defensive and starts coming out of his 'Gilbert' voice a little, dropping the jokes and slightly attacking her.

Is this the ONLY time (Except the Voice machine clip) where we see the real Gilbert come through?

Watching buffy from the start for the first time - should I watch Angel along side?

As the title really.

My original plan WAS to watch Angel after I'd finished buffy but I'm currently on episode 8 of season 4 and angels turned up talking about something that's going on in 'Angel' (I think).

If I do watch them side by side should I watch them in turn? (E.g s4 e1 (buffy). Then season 1 e1 angel. S4e2 buffy, s1.e2 angel etc?

I've seen some ppl say I line you SHOULD but others say it doesn't matter. ♥️

In England would you say it's embarrassing for two fully grown adults to sit in a large paddling pool (9ft rectangle) ?

M42 / F53

My wife and I are contemplating getting a 'paddling' pool, setting it up in the garden and sitting it in during these heatwaves to cool down. We are over looked by about two/three houses. We have grandkids who will obviously go in it when they come around etc lol but it's really for us.

When I told a co worker she said it was embarrassing and if it was her neighbour she'd laugh at us. A few co-workers also said the same and said "You're both a bit too old for that".

Personally I don't think it is? I've looked online and people in other countries see it as 'normal' but here in England it seems it's seen as embarrassing.

What are your thoughts?

EDIT: Just to clear this up we would still get one even if it is lol I'm just shocked people seem so against it.

Newbie with a question about the 'lore'.

Edit: ty to everybody who replied! I'm such an idiot lol just gone and watched Joeal version of the theme and found it. Ty everybody!

Male/40. I am VERY new to show and only started watching via their YouTube streams last week and I'm HOOKED. I used to semi watch it when I was 10ish but obviously never really got the jokes but used to love the bits in-between the movies.

Did I imagine this or was this in an episode. One of the reasons Joel/Mike can't choose when they can and can't watch the movies is due to Parts Joel used when making the robots? As In he used parts from the doors or something similar.

I don't know where I got this from but seen to remember Joel mentioning it in one episode but rewatching it this hasn't been mentioned it... Maybe I should just remember it's a show..

(England) - Ot's have recommended me getting a stair lift. Would I be 'ungreatful' for refusing for now?

56 mobility issues.

Id rather not go into my medical background if that's okay but I have mobility issues which will get worse as I get older BUT I'm semi okay at the moment. I have been told in 10-25 years time I will need a wheelchair for walking medium distances but may not need one for around the house.

I had an OT come around to my house for an assessment last year and they put in for a grant for a wet room (I currently have a bath with a shower over it and I can't lift my legs to get in). Which i really appreciate.

However, the OT recommended I get a stair lift too for the future. To install this they'd have to remove the bannisters. I am able to climb the stairs with the aid of the bannister but I am slow doing it (takes me about 2 mins to climb 12 stairs) and like that independence and while I can do it I want to continue.

I said I'd leave it for now but without me knowing out in for the grant for one anyway.

I spoke to the OT yesterday who said "We'd really recommend you getting one now" then said "unless you get the stair lift we can't get the wet room done either im afraid"nmthen said "not everybody gets this opportunity and you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth...". when I asked why I couldn't get a wet room/shower out in she just kept changing the topic.

I have a few days to think about it but I really don't want one.

Would I be ungreaful?

Am I being an arsehole by saying no and just wanted the shower put in? I felt like she was saying "You can't be that bad then" which isn't true at all. I don't enjoy having to ask for help and hate that I need to have a shower put in.

Additional: I meant to say my doctor has said to climb the stairs and move my legs as much as possible as it can help (which it does). Being unable to use the stairs will due to the stair lift will remove that.

England: Do you think 'naming and shaming' on local Facebook groups is getting a bit out of hand or are you in favour of it?

I used to somewhat be in favour of this. When it started becoming a thing on sm it seemed to be for good reasons. E.g scammers, people who knock at your door asking for details etc.

Over the past year i've seen people piling on people for little to no reason except making a mistake or just doing their job.

Example: On our local group a few days ago somebody posted a photo of an Evri driver who'd parked over a persons driveway to deliver TO THAT HOUSE! The neighbour had taken a photo of the delivery driver parked over the drive way (Where you can see them delivering a parcel to that house) and of their face and reg. People were piling on them and finding out her name etc.

(This may be a controversial one)
A few days before there was a photo of a woman coming out of the bushes with a toddler (They'd drawn over the toddlers face). It was in a local park with NO toilets near by. The description said this lady has taken her toddler into the bushes and let him wee up a wall calling her disgusting and "That park is for everybody to play in. They don't want to play in your kids piss"

I personally don't see a problem with this at all. Kids are kids and can't always hang on. It's not ideal but it's not a hanging offense.
Going by the comments you'd thought she'd kicked a puppy. They ended up finding her name and tagging her. A few were defending her but not as many as you'd think.

Then through the night a person had posted a video and photos of a Taxi driver who pulled out on them at a junction. Going by the video they hadn't done it on purpose and it was a misjudgement on their part, something we all have done. He put his hazards on and put his hand out of the window (to say sorry). Once again the comments had turned vile and mostly racist. Some mentioning he should be "Sent home where they drive like that" etc.

Are you in favour of this type of thing?
We ALL make mistakes. Every one of us. Surely ppl don't need to be 'attacked' for it online? Okay, name and shame people who purposely steal or scam but pulling out on somebody and saying sorry? Your toddler needing an urgent wee and you going deep into the bushes and letting him wee? Come on. Surely not?

(England) Okay, admit it.. Who here is a 'house watcher' while walking their dog?

Male/41

I didn't used to tell anybody this because I thought I was an oddball but last week three people admitted to doing this so now I wana see how many of us are out there.

When i take my dog for a walk (normally at night) I can't help but look into peoples houses and look at their décor, front room layouts etc or just look at what they're doing. I will not stand there staring in etc but I will look as I walk past and have a 'nose'.

There is one house nearby that they are ALWAYS watching a movie and I sometimes try and guess the movie/see if I know it. They also play video games too (adults) and i often guess the games too..

So.. Anybody else? lol

Racist neighbour asked me to not sell to a (Slur) - What should I do?

Not sure if this should be here or on a normal advice page.

We put the house up for sale a few weeks back and had a few families around. One being a non-white family who have family in a few streets over and are extremely interested. They've asked for a second viewing and will be taking part in a group viewing this weekend.

I have a neighbour who is a card carrying EDL member and makes it clear he is. I never talk to him except a "good morning".
Yesterday morning this neighbour called me over and asked how the house sale was going and I said "Fine, we have a group viewing next Saturday" he laughed and said "Get the best price you can but don't go selling to P's (Slur for Pakistanis). I ain't living next door to em.". I just said "Well, it's who ever offers the most really" - "No. I am fucking serious. Don't go selling to a P or a Bl*ckie." -" They wouldn't be having a happy home for long" He was trying to keep it upbeat but there was a layer of him trying to intimidate.

Obviously, these comments are fucking vile and disgusting. At first my gut reaction was "I'll sell to who the fuck I want. I hope it is a family who aren't white" but my wife pointed something out to me. "Would you really want to put a family into a situation like that?" The family that came around were VERY friendly and you could tell they were laid back and family orientated.

What would you do? I have an appointment with my estate agent on Wednesday but I know if to bring it up. I don't want it to seem like I am with this neighbour or are doing it for their benefit. I'd HATE for a family to move in and have their life ruined by this prick.

Is this OCD or something else?

M/40.

I was diagnosed with OCD when I was 21 and had CBT for it. It helped with MOST things except this one 'thing'. However, it was later diagnosed as Anxiety and the OCD.

I've re-read my CBT notes etc and it's still there. I've had it from a child and spoke to the CBT therapist about it who said "Its OCD" but i'm not entirely sure as it feels different from my other compulsions.

It's very hard to explain but I'm not sure i can truly get over how it feels etc.

For e.g when I was a child (11) my father had suspected cancer. I then 'bargained' with a higher power (i'm not religious so it wasn't with 'god') that if I sacrificed something he'd be okay. So, I destroyed a VHS Wrestling tape I had. A few months later I bought the same VHS tape and he had a suspected heart attack (Turned out to be an angina attack). This, in my head, linked it with me going back on that promise and buying a new tape SO i destroyed it again. After that it came out it was an angina attack. I never purchased or even watched that tape/wrestling event again thinking if I did, he'd die.

This has happeed 1000's of times over the years and i've 'sacrificed' ALOT from refusing to do things I enjoy in life to destroying/throwing away photo albums in hopes it 'appeases' this higher power.

Now, i'm not a nut lol I know logically there is no 'higher power' who is watching me soley thinking "if he throws away that CD that job interview can go well". I know it logically and as ive got older I can use CBT to get around it. However, when ever I don't sacrifice that 'thing' and it goes wrong it feels like a kick in the stomach and it's my fault nm WHAT CBT technique I use.

My dad did pass from Cancer in the end (5 years ago) and there is a BIG part of me that blames myself for that because I went back on something I promised to 'sacrifice'. If i sit and think about it I KNOW it wasn't my fault but that instant thought and feeling is there.

Something is going on in my life at the moment and I'm really struggling with this 'sacrifice' thing. I have come 'close' to doing stupid things like deleting my photo folder (I do photography as a hobby) which as about 20 years of photos in them etc.

Is this OCD? ha anybody had anything similar?

I am also getting diagnosed for ADHD (and autism) at the moment too and it looks somewhat likely I have it as my sister has it, my daughter has it and i think my mother does too.

thank you.

Do authors have to 'payp more to have PDF files/photos attached to their audio books?

I LOVE listening to biographies but I miss the fact we don't get to see the photos as you would in a book. However, some audiobooks include these photos in the form of PDF. For e.g the (BBC) Ghosts fan guide includes photos. I am currently listening to (and REALLY enjoying) Berserker by Adrian Edmondson but sadly does not come with the PDF/photos.

I was wondering does it cost the publisher/Author money to include this 'extra' or are the publishers just being lazy not including it?

Cheap Microwaves Vs Expensive.. Any point?

Im about to buy a microwave.
Ive been in the market for a microwave for a little bit. I sadly purchased a second hand one from FB market place for £40 and it was DOA and the seller ghosted me.
So, I have a tight budget and found a new one for £50 for a 700W one.
However, a friend has told me that i NEED to save for a better one (£150) and at least 800W and a cheap 700w wont cook anything properly..
Howevr, multiple places online say a 700W microwave cooks the same as any other 700W and it's JUST the features (and build quality/look) you're paying extra for.

Is there any truth to this?
I will be using it for defrosting, making porridge, heating jacket potatoes and MAYBE heating soup. That's it. I don't need features etc.

Would I be better waiting 3-4 months and spending triple what I wanted on it or should I just get the £50 one.

Maybe an odd question, especially as I haven't pointed out a machine directly. However, i am a coffee drinker but my partner is not and she really dislikes it. For e.g if I use the same spoon to stir my coffee with stirring her Tea she can taste it and says it tastes funny and can't really drink it.

At the moment we have a Hot water dispense style kettle. (This one) but it's on it's last legs. I would like a coffee maker but sadly we do not have the room for both. I was wondering do the coffee machines that have a Hot water dispenser feature TASTE like coffee as it's coming through the same spout? For e.g one (like this)

First off I am currently JUST learning how to lay a patio and how to do it. I know almost Zero but i am pretty handy and will try anything.
we currently have a patio 3x4m. The slabs can come up easily and the hardcore base seems nice and firm. So, i thought why not replace it? Can't cost too much..

Well, According to an online calculator it would cost £290 for the concrete and sharp sand alone.. Now, i may be being tight as a nuns crotch (if you pardon the expression) but is that correct?!?!

Would you say that's a lot more than you'd expect or about right? ❤️ Ty for any advice.

We've just moved into the property that needs quite a bit of decorating, flooring etc and If that's correct it will obviously have to be put on the back burner for a while. 😄

I've found a FB page which is using images like this and saying it's their Dog. They're also a dog breeder and trying to sell their dogs. Can somebody tell if this is A.I or not? So many are donating to this person it's scary and now my mom wants to Donate -_- .

They have other much more obvious A.I photos on their page too so they have used them before.
