The film does a brilliant job of balancing the cheater's guilt and the mistreatment that led to the cheating.

The story was supposed to be about Pooja (Shabana Azmi's character). But because Smita Patil was a star, she had to be given more screen time. The director felt that this did injustice to Pooja's story as the movie instead became about the other woman, too. Today, that nuance is exactly why it's a cult classic after 44 years.
