Car plunges into sinkhole after hydrant line bursts in Syracuse
A car fell into a massive sinkhole Thursday morning on North Geddes Street in Syracuse.
The sinkhole was caused by a burst fire hydrant service line that caused the sandy soil in the area to erode, causing the collapse, said Commissioner of Water, Robert Brandt, who was on the scene. Read more.

An Upstate New York man jailed on federal child pornography charges is accused of plotting to hire a hitman to kill two FBI agents and a federal prosecutor involved in his case.
He wanted the hitman to kill them, feed them into a woodchipper and send him a video of it all, prosecutors allege in a criminal complaint.

Wells College says the $12.5 million sale to the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge has fallen apart after the nonprofit failed to close, according to court papers.

Precious Arzuaga admitted today to torturing and killing Sam Nordquist in February 2025.
Arzuaga appeared in Ontario County Court this morning and pleaded guilty to charges that include first-degree murder, kidnapping and torture.
She also pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child for forcing her children to participate in torturing Nordquist, a 24-year-old trans man from Minnesota.
Judge Kristina A. Karle revealed in court that there is a separate federal investigation of the murder. The federal court system can impose a death penalty. New York cannot.

No license required: Fish for free in NY this weekend
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is waiving freshwater fishing license fees June 27–28. No fishing license required for residents and non-residents alike, 16 and older (kids under 16 can always fish for free).
You won’t need a license for free fishing days, but you will need to obey all other fishing regulations.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation acquired the Seneca Lake property from the Boy Scouts of America through the New York State Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. Located in the Town of Ovid, the property encompasses the former Babcock-Hovey Scout Camp.
“Babcock-Hovey is a gem along Seneca Lake,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “By protecting this waterfront from development and connecting it to existing public lands, New York State will continue the camp’s legacy of affordable outdoor recreation for generations to come.”

6 people found dead inside Upstate NY residence after welfare check
Six people were found dead inside a residence in Upstate New York on Tuesday evening after authorities arrived to conduct a requested welfare check. A neighbor requested the police welfare check because they had not spoken to any of the residents since June 9 and noted that children lived at the apartment. Police announced on Wednesday that four children and two adults were found inside the home.
The cause of death is still under investigation.
Upstate NY man wins $3 million lottery scratch-off prize at a Stewart’s Shops

Daniel Nellis of Caroga Lake claimed a $3 million top prize on the New York Lottery’s $3,000,000 Cash scratch-off game, receiving a lump sum payment of $1,328,043 after required withholdings.
He purchased the winning ticket at Stewart’s Shops located at 1-19 E. Main St. in Johnstown.
World’s largest rubber duck is heading to Buffalo waterfront next week
