Why do I feel like Chileans are all really good-looking?

After moving here to live, I was totally blown away. Latin Americans in general are incredibly good-looking. My male coworkers are extremely handsome—even as another guy, I can’t help but think they’re stunning. All the young women and ladies I see out on the streets are gorgeous and full of grace.

前往汕尾

Speaking of places I’ve traveled in China, I haven’t visited a huge number of spots, but if I had to make some recommendations, Shanwei in Guangdong Province would be my top pick. It’s absolutely amazing. It’s a coastal city with affordable prices and fairly convenient transport, and the whole city is compact. You can easily book a hotel extremely close to the sea without spending much. During holidays, a room costs around 300 yuan a night, while on regular weekdays, it’s just over 100 yuan.

You can enjoy incredibly fresh seafood there. A lot of the seafood served in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities is caught in Shanwei and shipped out, so you get to taste delicious seafood straight from the source. Everything tastes unbelievably fresh. You must try marinated raw seafood, locally nicknamed “Chaoshan Poison”. There are countless stalls selling it on Second Road and Fourth Road. They have mantis shrimp, Chinese mitten crabs, oysters, baby octopuses, all kinds of shrimp, salmon and various sea snail meats—all fantastic. Two or three people can eat their fill for roughly 200 yuan. I’m a big guy with a huge appetite, and even I leave fully satisfied.

If you hit the night market in the evening, expect to spend around 500 to 600 yuan for two or three people, but you’ll get an incredible spread of ultra-fresh seafood and local specialties.

Besides seafood, beef is another signature Chaoshan delicacy. The beef is remarkably fresh since the slaughterhouses are nearby, perfect for hot pot. There are countless ways to cook it, but the clear broth hot pot is the most famous. You can use plain water broth, beef brisket broth, or add other seasonings—no matter how you prepare it, it tastes wonderful.

Feeling of the first time in Chile 🇨🇱

I’ve been in Chile for a month now—neither a very long nor a short stretch of time. I’d like to share my impressions of this country as a foreigner.

Before coming here, Chile, along with Argentina, felt like the farthest corners of the globe to me, almost on par with the North and South Poles. That’s how remote they seemed in my mind. I barely knew anything about Chile beforehand; all I knew was it was an extremely long, narrow nation, and that was it.

But once I actually arrived, gazing down from the plane, I saw snow-capped mountains, endless oceans, arid deserts, and modern cities lined with skyscrapers. Just like all other prosperous countries I’ve visited across the world, Chile has everything you’d expect from a developed place.

This is my first time ever setting foot in Chile. I’ve complained before about how pricey everything is here, and it might be down to the neighbourhood I live in—goods really do cost a fortune. Even after a whole month, my opinion hasn’t shifted. Prices here are substantially higher than in many places I’ve lived before, especially the Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern countries I know well.

On the flip side, Chilean people are incredibly warm and friendly. Young men and women alike stroll along the streets, laughing and chatting as they pass by, everyone seeming genuinely cheerful. That’s one of the biggest draws of this country for me.

The urban infrastructure has an aged charm, yet it’s neatly laid out with clear planning. It’s exactly the kind of cityscape I love, where history and modern life coexist side by side.

I also have another lingering confusion: getting a Chilean visa is surprisingly difficult. I honestly don’t understand why the visa process here is so tough—does anyone have an explanation to clear this up for me?

What’s more, not speaking Spanish creates constant hassle, so I’m working hard to learn the language. I’m also eager to connect with everyone online to discuss all kinds of topics together.

worst jobs

I'm really curious about the worst jobs everyone has ever had. Let me share mine first. I once worked at a construction company where they held three months' salary before paying one month's wage. I couldn't stand it and quit. A few months later, I asked my former colleagues, and they said new recruits now have to wait six months or even a whole year to get their first paycheck.

Have you ever had your wages deducted by your employer?

I don't know if wage withholding is common in your country. I'm from China, and many companies here hold back employees' salaries for one month before paying them. For example, it's the end of June now, and the salary you receive at the end of June is for May. The June salary will be paid in July. This is extremely common in China.

When Chinese workers are employed by Chinese enterprises overseas, many of these companies withhold salaries for three months or even half a year before starting regular payments. I want to ask: is this practice prevalent in your country?

I’d like to ask why there aren’t many high-paying jobs in Jamaica. A lot of employers underpay their workers, especially Chinese companies and Chinese people there. They also make staff cover costs upfront—do you think this is reasonable?

I’m really curious about how ordinary Chileans view various East Asian countries. Alternatively, you can bring up any questions you have, and I’ll answer them—this includes China, South Korea, and Japan.

Why does everything in Santiago feel extremely expensive to me?

Why does everything in Santiago feel extremely expensive to me? Fruits, meat, rent, and taxi fares all cost a fortune. I’m really curious: do local residents earn extremely high salaries? What kinds of jobs do they have that allow them to afford such steep living costs? As a foreigner, everything here just feels unaffordable to me.

I find it really hard to make friends here

As an East Asian, this is my first time being assigned to work in Chile. The fellow Chinese staff I live with are much older than me, so we barely have anything in common. They prefer traditional Chinese food, while I lean more toward Western cuisine. I’m actually good at cooking many Chinese dishes, yet most of the required ingredients are hard to find here in Chile. I really want to make friends with local Chileans, both guys and girls, but it’s proven extremely difficult.
