I have been working on my game every day for the past 300 days, an update

3 months ago I posted here that I had been working on my game for 210 days straight and shared my experience on how to stay motivated for long periods.

Today I am happy to share this important update as I kept grinding and reached a new important milestone: 300 days!

A lot has happened during the past 90 days:

  • I went back to the gym, as promised in my original post
  • I released a first trailer of my game
  • My game passed 1000 wishlists on Steam
  • I am on track to release a first public demo next month

No lesson or tips this time, I was just happy about my progress and I wanted to share it with other solo-devs. Also I am curious to find out what's your current streak (not to flex, I just like numbers and stats).

1000 wishlists! No Next Fest, no demo yet, just slow grinding

My game passed 1000 wishlists the other day and as a solo-dev this is the first time I am starting to feel things are getting real!

I haven't released a demo yet and I published my first trailer only 2 weeks ago when I publicly announced my game to the press. Few websites picked the news and they helped me reaching this first milestone.

Now the plan is to get a demo out by mid-September and then to join a Next Fest, still not sure if going for October or if it's better to wait until next one. I guess it all depends on how things will go with the demo.

In the meantime thanks to everyone who has believed in me so far, I will do my best to not disappoint you!

Showcase Monday - tell us what you're working on or what you just published in comments

Despite the fact this community is called devblogs and despite the rules explicitly state showcasing and link dumps are not allowed, every single week I still have to delete many posts that do just that.

In the attempt to try to reduce this kind of spam, but also to offer an extra outlet to all the members of this community, from now on I am going to create this showcase thread every Monday.

You are still welcome to create new posts to share with us your dev-log posts or videos, but now you can also use this thread to showcase something which is not a dev log.

"Virtualord, The Virtual Conqueror" -

I present you "Virtualord, The Virtual Conqueror", where Base Building meets Tower Defense in a classic TBS game

hey people of r/BaseBuildingGames

I am a solo indie developer working on "Virtualord, The Virtual Conqueror" a TBS game with TD and RPG elements for Windows & Linux.

In Virtualord you build your base, gather resources, set up defenses to resist enemy waves and attack back after building your army. Basically think of Base Building + Tower Defense where you have to attack too launching waves of mini-units, but where you also control main units directly. Strategic and tactical choices are endless as you can mix different styles of playing as you prefer.

There's no trailer yer, but it's coming soon and on the Steam page you will find many screenshots and short videos in the game description that will give you an idea about how the game works.

Virtualord is currently in alpha and I am planning to release a public demo in about 2 months. In case you wanted to join the closed alpha testing, you can join us on Discord, where I publish new builds (almost) every month.

Feel free to ask any question and I will be happy to answer!

Beware all the scammers trying to sell you services to Make Your Game Great Again...

This guy joined my game's Discord server this morning and asked to chat with me in private.

This is the short conversation we had. He didn't even bother to open my steam page, where you can immediately see I haven't published a trailer yet.

His website was all about marketing services and consulting for indie game developers, but it was full or red flags, like single marketing campaigns linked to multiple different games.

Let's be clear, I don't mind people trying to sell services and contacting me in private, but if you do that you should be a professional and at least try to understand what I am doing first.

Anyway, careful with whoever offers you anything, it's full of sharks out there, luckily they're not that clever as they think they are.

We are half way this year, 6 months left to achieve your goal(s). How is it going?

You might recall I posted a similar image on the 1st of January.

Now we are just in the middle, 6 months are gone and 6 are left.

Are you happy with what you have achieved/done so far? If not, are you planning to change anything in your life to improve things?

It's so rewarding to see automatic doors and the pathfinder working just fine in my TBS game

Game developers know doors can be a PITA, but surprisingly it took me less than I expected to implement automatic doors in my TBS game "Virtualord, The Virtual Conqueror".

They open when a friendly unit is about to cross and close right after. They also close at the beginning of your turn if you open them manually, this is to avoid to forget some defenses open to enemies.

Now I am tempted to implement portals too, but I might save this for post release.

For the first time Steam is explicitly saying Next Fest is showing you games randomly for the first 48 hours and giving you choice after that
