r/moviereviews Community Update

Hello everyone!

I would like to take a moment to introduce u/Old_Monitor_8888 and myself as the new moderators of r/moviereviews. You should already begin seeing some significant improvements across the community as we work toward a new vision for the subreddit.

Our Goal

>To make r/moviereviews Reddit's premier destination for original, high-quality movie criticism.

We want this subreddit to be a place where people come to read and write thoughtful reviews, discover great films, and have meaningful discussions about cinema.

Text-Only Reviews

To better support that vision, we are moving to text-only submissions.

Image posts, videos, and link posts will be disabled so the focus remains on your writing and the discussions happening within Reddit. Links to YouTube channels, videos, blogs, newsletters, review websites, Discord servers, or social media accounts are now prohibited.

Removing External Links

We have removed the sidebar links to MoviesCountdown and Simkl.

Our goal is to keep discussion and engagement happening here on Reddit rather than directing members to third-party websites. The current moderation team has no affiliation with these services and is unsure what relationship, if any, they previously had with the subreddit.

As the community grows, we would rather focus on Reddit-native tools and features that directly benefit our members.

A Focus on Quality

We want r/moviereviews to be welcoming to everyone. You do not need to be a professional film critic to participate here.

At the same time, we want to encourage thoughtful discussion and original writing rather than low-effort reactions or spam.

To help with this, we will be introducing:

  • Minimum review length requirements
  • Stronger karma and account age protections
  • Improved spam filtering
  • Updated posting guidelines

Bad Faith Content

We have overhauled the rules to make expectations clearer. r/moviereviews should be a place where people can disagree about movies while still respecting one another.

Content created primarily to provoke arguments rather than discuss films is not welcome.

This includes:

  • Hate speech
  • Harassment
  • Trolling and baiting
  • Personal attacks
  • Review bombing campaigns
  • Posts created primarily to push political or culture-war agendas rather than discuss the film itself

Thoughtful discussion of the political, social, and cultural themes explored in films is absolutely welcome. However, we will not allow the subreddit to become a place for culture-war arguments. Posts or comments created primarily to inflame, provoke, or push ideological agendas rather than discuss the film itself may be removed.

New Genre Flair

We have completely redesigned the post flair system. Reviews will now be categorized by genre, making it easier to browse and discover the types of films you enjoy.

New genre flairs include:

Action, Adventure, Animation, Comedy, Documentary, Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Romance, Science Fiction, and Thriller.

For members who enjoy writing longer-form pieces, we have also added dedicated flairs for:

Film Analysis
A film analysis goes beyond whether a movie is good or bad and examines the techniques, themes, and ideas behind it.

Cinematic Essay
A cinematic essay uses a film as a starting point to explore larger ideas about filmmaking, culture, history, or society.

General Discussion
An open-ended conversation starter that does not primarily focus on reviewing or analyzing a specific film.

Experimental Features

Outside of moderating, I enjoy building interactive Reddit apps, and I am currently developing several tools that could make r/moviereviews even more engaging.

Some ideas we are exploring include:

  • A review interface to introduce film scores and help reduce bot spam
  • Community review collections for individual films, similar to megathreads
  • Weekly digests highlighting the best reviews from the community
  • Reviewer badges and progression systems

These are only ideas at this stage, and we want community feedback before introducing any experimental features.

We Want Your Feedback

Please take a few minutes to read through the updated rules and then comment below to let us know:

  • Are you excited about the new direction?
  • Is there anything you would change?
  • What features would you like to see added?
  • Would you enjoy experimental Reddit features, or would you prefer to keep things simple?

This community belongs to everyone who contributes to it, and we would love your help shaping its future.

20th Anniversary

In only three years, r/moviereviews will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Reddit.

I am truly honored to be a part of this community's history and grateful for the opportunity to help shape its future.

This subreddit has grown because of the passion, creativity, and dedication of its members over the years. I look forward to celebrating this incredible milestone with all of you when the time comes.

Here's to the next three years, the next 20 years, and everything this community will continue to become.

Calling all artists help us test Sticker Space!

We're putting the finishing touches on Sticker Space the Reddit app where you draw stickers, put them up for a community vote, and decorate your own personal Space with everything you and everyone else has created.

Before the big launch, we're looking for a bunch of artsy-fartsy folks to kick the tires. Whether you're a art-school-certified or somewhere in the crayon-scribble middle, we'd love to have you.

What you'll be doing

  • Create your own Sticker Space and start drawing with the built-in Tegaki editor.
  • Submit your stickers for community voting.
  • Watch them live or die by the upvote, and see what rarity they earn.
  • Browse the Shop, visit other people's Spaces, sign their Guestbooks, and, if you're feeling mischievous, slap a Vandal sticker on a friend's wall.
  • Tell us everything! What broke, what was confusing, and what you wish existed.

What we're looking for

  • Bugs: Anything glitchy, slow, or broken (on both mobile and desktop).
  • Drawing feedback: Is the canvas fun to use? Are there brushes, tools, or features you'd like to see?
  • First impressions: Is it obvious what to do when you first open the app?
  • Balance: Do points, prices, and rarities feel rewarding, too grindy, or too generous?

How to join

Head over to r/sticker_test_01_dev and request to join. Mention that you're from r/GamesOnReddit and we'll give you a special flair that you'll get to keep when we launch! https://www.reddit.com/r/sticker_test_01_dev/

I'm really hoping this little experiment grows into a creative community and spawns something delightfully weird.

How To Watch Strange: Junji Ito's Tales for Sleepless Nights

First, a reminder that this subreddit does not support or endorse piracy. Please do not post or comment links to piracy websites or unauthorized downloads of the episodes.

Links to fan-sub groups or subtitle files are allowed. At the time of writing, however, no fan group appears to be translating this series.

Option 1: Wait for the international release

The series has been announced for international distribution on HBO Max later this year:
https://www.instagram.com/p/DaW8WygkyMx/

Option 2: Watch through a legitimate Japanese streaming service

The series is available on legitimate Japanese streaming platforms such as Lemino, TVer, and U-NEXT. These services are intended for viewers in Japan and are geo-restricted, so you must either be physically located in Japan or use a VPN with a Japanese server.

Episode 1 on TVer:
https://tver.jp/episodes/epkios357o

I was able to watch the first episode successfully using VPN Gate's free public VPN service provided by the University of Tsukuba:
https://www.vpngate.net/en/howto_softether.aspx

If English subtitles become available from a fan-sub group in the future, you will need to find your own lawful method of obtaining a copy of the video in accordance with the laws of your country. Discussion of downloading methods is outside the scope of this subreddit. You can then use a media player such as VLC to load the subtitle file and synchronize it with the video.
