Reunification and the Supervillains.

In the TV series Gotham, when Gotham was reunited with the mainland, the show never fully explained the fate of each villain’s territory. The finale jumps ahead after the city’s reconnection, leaving many details to the audience’s imagination. However, based on the series’ established lore, here’s the most likely outcome.

During the No Man’s Land period, Gotham was divided into territories controlled by figures like Oswald Cobblepot, Barbara Kean, Edward Nygma and other gangs. These territories existed due to the absence of a functioning city government or police force.

Once the military and federal government reopened access to Gotham, these territories became unsustainable. The return of the Gotham City Police Department, the military and federal authorities would have overwhelmed most gangs. Criminals who depended on controlling neighbourhoods faced arrest, hiding, or a return to traditional organised crime rather than ruling districts. Some were killed or betrayed during the transition.

The finale confirms some individual fates: Oswald Cobblepot and Edward Nygma are imprisoned in Arkham Asylum by the time of the ten-year flash-forward, though they later escape. Barbara Kean survives, becomes a successful businesswoman and distances herself from her criminal past. Selina Kyle becomes a skilled cat burglar instead of a gang leader. Jeremiah Valeska disappears after his confrontation with Bruce and is later revealed to be incarcerated before his final escape.

One notable shift is the show’s deliberate transition from Gotham being ruled by warlords to the more familiar comic-book status quo. Instead of territorial kingdoms, the villains become independent rogues who periodically escape custody to challenge Batman. This aligns with traditional Batman mythology, where Gotham is governed by legitimate authorities but constantly threatened by recurring supervillains rather than permanently divided into criminal fiefdoms.

While the series doesn’t show the cleanup in detail, it implies the reunification effectively ended Gotham’s gangs’ territorial rule. Their empires crumbled once the city restored functioning government law enforcement and external support.

Season 4A is actually pretty good. (A lot to read)

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with Season Four. The first trailer, centred around the Scarecrow, was a revelation. It hinted that the first half would focus on this supervillain rather than a character like Sofia Falcone. Sofia Falcone was a surprise but Crystal Reed absolutely nails her performance. While the actual plot didn’t quite meet my expectations, I still enjoyed Season 4A for the most part. Bruce finding who he truly is then taking a stumble into “bad guy” territory from a nice change of pace for the story and for the character. Professor Pyg is also good though it’s not the real Pyg. It’s an impersonator but that’s Gotham for you.

Harvey and Jim’s friendship is manipulated by Sofia, which gives Harvey a little bit of conflict to work with.

Oswald’s character gets tested a lot and when Sofia puts her plan into action it truly becomes interesting. I was a bit testy about the resurrection of Barbara but I liked how she ran a gun shop with Tabitha and Selina. Although I would’ve liked to have seen more of them together than just one episode of teamwork it was different and it’s a pity she reverted back to the Sirens club. Penguin finding friendship with Martin, it was so charming and unique. Once Sofia gets put into a “coma”, she’s quickly forgotten and her impact is pretty much gone. The death of Carmine Falcone hit hard as a fan favourite of the first season and the organised crime plot, his death kind of signified the end for me. Zsasz reigns supreme and I like how he rebelled against Penguin in the end.

Season 4B is where the season picks up to the zaniness Gotham became known for and that’s when the season started to fumble:

-Lee and Ed started a relationship—nonsense.

-Jerome died and Jeremiah took over—a cheat to start over.

-Ras Al Ghul passed on his legacy and spirit to Barbara who proves herself as worthy—it felt like a free trial of a storyline that could’ve went somewhere good but didn’t. He came back and then died again.

I wouldn’t say Season Four is the worst season of Gotham, there isn’t really a bad season just a fumbling season.

Season Four should’ve been the ending.

With the big build up of Silas throughout the fourth season, I believe it should’ve been the ending to the show or at-least play a big part in an explosive way next season instead of Silas just being a “doppelgänger” of sorts. The twist in the season finale was a “wtf” but the execution felt like Paul Wesley just wanted to do something fun for once nothing with any impact.

Season Four was the last season that had major impact on anything.

Are there any major plot issues?

Possibly a stupid question for a 7-season series but is there any major plot issues that caught you attention during your initial watch or rewatch.

Was Fish Mooney a facade?

Since most of her earlier scenes show her as feisty, very sexualised and confident, always playing up that role of a Mafia lieutenant but once she left Gotham, I feel like Fish became her true self and we saw her became more than what she was under Carmine’s thumb. I think that’s why her character is so fascinating.

The speech scene was very powerful and although Fish was definitely ‘out for herself’, she was fighting to keep others alive.

Gotham Locations that vanish.

Later seasons often introduce locations that are never mentioned or seen until they appear in their respective episodes. For example, Ra’s Vault in Season Four was never mentioned by Ra’s himself. Similarly, Fish Mooney’s club is never seen again after Season One even though she returns.

Ra’s Al Ghul’s locations are the ones that confuse me, he has plenty of places and then they’re never mentioned again; the place where the Lazarus Water was, is gone after the final episode of Season Three.

It’s a show like Gotham with incredible locations. Some places appear only in certain seasons and disappear after they end.

Sofia is dearly missed when she’s gone.

Of course many thought Sofia’s story dragged on but I feel her story ended too soon especially right after we get Barbara’s Demon’ Head story and Jeremiah Valeska right after it. Sofia had such a major part of Season 4 and she just dies and has no lasting impact on anything else afterward. She is even said to be “in a coma” by Harvey and then she’s just gone. I wish she got a resurrection, by Season 4 we had plenty come back from the dead so why not.

Did Jim really think it would just go away?

It’s funny the way Jim thought Sofia would just leave the city after everything she planned to do and everything he’s faced.

The latter episodes of Season 1 were the best Fish ever was.

The final few episodes truly allowed Jada to expand her acting range beyond the minx feisty portrayal she had embodied as Fish throughout the entire season. I appreciate her vulnerability yet the determination remains palpable.

Is Gremlins 3 still happening?

Not to be inpatient but It’s no shock that the last major news we got was in November and we haven’t had any news since April about Jenna Ortega being “cast” which was debunked to have either been a PR stunt or just false rumours.

The writers of Gremlins 3 are currently spare heading a different film and have not mentioned anything about the next Gremlins.

Barbara was supposed to be in the first episode of Season Four.

In the comic con trailer there’s a bit showing Tabitha confronting Barbara at the Iceberg Lounge. I wonder why it was cut.

[Film/TV] Gotham Season 1 is everything!

In my opinion, Season 1 of FOX’s Gotham from 2015 is simply the best. I adore everything about it; it’s grounded, features fantastic characters and offers a compelling take on Gotham City. It also avoids excessive Batman callbacks, unlike the later seasons that feel cluttered and overly familiar.

While the entire show is great, Season 1 stands out as the most rewatchable. In the era of CW shows Gotham stood out as a misunderstood crime drama and I was and still am here for it. Again the rest of the show is still stellar but I feel mentioning season 1 is merited for how different it is tonally, it has bite where the other seasons kind of slowly start to lack as we pass through each season.

Robin Lord Taylor owns this season as one of the best characters ever written.

Fish died way too easily in the Season 1 finale.

The final fight scene between Fish and Penguin is incredibly satisfying to watch. It’s cinematic to see Penguin emerge victorious. But, I feel Fish didn’t put up much of a fight after being shot by Butch. It seemed almost predetermined that Fish would die as Jada didn’t want to return until later. Considering she could have fought much harder after being shot, it felt somewhat forced.

I kind of wish Fish was included in a more exciting arc rather than just being brought back by Hugo Strange only to go missing for an entire season to die again. Jada Pinkett was so good as Fish, the hate for the actress shouldn’t have bled into the character, she had a vibe about her she suited her style and knew the role. Gotham needed more of her. Once she died in Season 3, the show became rather dull no matter how exciting it tried to be.

Which season of Gotham is the least rewatchable?

I’ve made a post about how Season 1 is my most rewatchable season, but let’s discuss which season falls victim of being the least watchable out of the entire series.

The first season has major rewatchability.

When it first aired, Season 1 received very critical reviews. It feels like this is one of those TV seasons that can be watched repeatedly as the rewatchability improves with each viewing. Even at its initial airing, I found the show at its most consistent.

I really enjoy Oswald’s climb up the food chain in the city and playing both sides. Jim’s role in keeping Gotham on its heels while the Underworld clambering for a piece of the chair and Harvey tries to balance his feisty side and friendship with Jim. Fish Mooney and Oswald’s rivalry. It’s so good. I know some episodes can drag especially when they take the story away from the core Mobster story but even then the show knows what it is and doesn’t try to preach Batman lore like the other seasons do.

Almost everything about this season is strong:

The mobster story.
Jim Gordon isn’t yet pretentious.
The villain of the week format kinda works for me.
How they handle Nygma, he’s not a background character as much as he seems.
Jada Pinkett’s Fish Mooney is even very fun to watch.
The city itself feels a lot more like a character than it does in later seasons when the focus is pushed to the supervillains.

Season One still has a fun vibe even when it’s serious.

Such a satisfying season finale too.

My ratings for the entire series:

Season One: 10/10
Season Two: 7/10
Season Three: 6/10
Season Four: 6/10
Season Five: 5/10
