How is China completing all this infrastructure projects and we in Australia can't get shit done

How is China completing all the large scale infrastructure particularly in rail and there's so many examples of projects here that are 5-10x blown past the initial budgets and years delayed?

Which big chonky book to tackle for rest of year?

Challenging myself to read a literary brick and finish by end of year, picking between War & Peace, Count of Monte Cristo, Les Miserables, The Brothers Karamazov, and Middlemarch, or feel free to suggest others.

I like themes of exploring the human condition, philosophy, psychology, and God.

Company turnover and replacements trend, red flags

I've been at this land dev consultancy for 3 years now, it's a small firm and it's been okay so far, no complaints then the past 18 months have had lots of staff turnover particularly our senior and lead engineers and project managers.

Company directors have been really slow to recruit replacements, everyone else is picking up additional responsibilities to cover the gaps and the last 5 hires have been overseas trained engineers with way less experience and skills.

It's so frustrating, it's so obvious what the play is here and it feels impossible to stay somewhere long term because they always find a way to ruin things, work has become increasingly difficult and culture has gone to shit.

Melbourne North-East (Hurtsbridge corridor), thoughts?

Looking at the north-eastern Hurtsbridge corridor, my new physio is in Macleod and I genuinely loved the area as I started travelling there.

Macleod is a bit outside my $1m budget but any thoughts on Diamond Creek, Eltham North, Greensborough and potentially Hurtsbridge?

Young family, kids nearing primary school age, wife is a teacher and I work in the CBD a couple times a week, we prefer a quieter and homely lifestyle.

Please focus on your daily ethics and civic conduct

Salam wa alaykom everyone,

This is a quick rant/vent about daily observations of other Muslims, and a kind reminder that we represent Islam to other non-Muslims and they see Islam through the lens of interacting with us.

The Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) is one of high-etiquette and civic conduct:

  • Removing harm from the streets
  • Not wasting
  • Not loitering on the streets for no reason and staring at other people
  • Smiling at each other and being courteous

These are all Sahih Sunnahs, and many more!

So I am appalled how often I see other Muslims engaging in low-etiquette ways and being careless, a few examples:

  • Littering and being wasteful, so often Muslim families meet in public parks and leave trash and waste behind
  • A young Muslim graduate started in our company bragging about how he managed to get a disability parking sticker in a dodgy way and he parks downstairs for free, this is not Islamic behavior!
  • A couple weeks ago I was driving and a young person in a sports car cuts me off at a turn dangerously, they speed up at the stop light next to me and the person gives me the middle finger, she is wearing a HIJAB!

I don't want to go on, you know exactly the stereotypical and hateful content we see online because there is some truth to it and I do not accept the racist and xenophobic rhetoric except we must hold each other and our families accountable, encourage better ethical and civic behavior with your loved ones.

Thank you and Salam walaykom

Learning more about Shi'ism, quick question

Salam everyone

A quick question as I learn more about Shi'ism.

Is believing in Wilayat al-Faqih an obligation to be part of Shi'ism?

Thank you

Suburb recommendation thoughts

Hi everyone

Keep this nice and short, currently trying to narrow down my suburb targets as I look to move out of Wollert where we don't particularly like the new estate lifestyle and want something different for a "forever home", key criteria & priorities:

  • Quieter, less built-up, leafier suburb
  • Good schools and parks (young family, primary school age)
  • Safe and more desirable demographic
  • Access to northern suburbs and western suburbs (parents and family) under 40mins
  • Access to CBD via train under 1 hour
  • 3-4 bedroom and 750m2 block under $1 million

These are our priorities and I accept you can't have everything for a limited budget but that's my starting point, currently my search has taken me to Hurtsbridge, Diamond Creek and Eltham North but happy for more recommendations.

Thanks!

Book about mathematics and its relationship with nature?

I hope the title makes sense but I'm imagining a book that describes the philosophy of mathemtaics and how it describes the physical universe, the mathematical constants (golden ratio, pi, etc) and the history & philosophy of it.

Book about nature, solitude and slowing down

Wanting a classic literature novel with these themes.

Reconnecting with nature and slowing life down, appreciating the little things, being at peace with ones self or own family

Christian interested in Islam but confused about Islamic Jesus

Salam everyone,

I'm doing further reading as I potentially look into converting to Islam from a Christian background.

My understanding is that the Islamic Jesus is a highly respected Messenger and from the Quranic and Islamic perspective, preached a monotheistic message that was corrupted.

I'm confused how this works in practice because this seems a bit theoretical, if Muslims do not accept any of the canonical Bible then where do we access Jesus' message and work?

Thank you in advance

Dawah social media, why is the Shahada modified?

Salam wa alaykom

I just came across a popular instagram dawah account that posts Westerners converting to Islam and I noticed the Shahada has been modified to include "I bear witness that Jesus is a Messenger and not the Son of God".

What is the religious basis of changing the Shahada? That seems quite odd to me.

WIBTA Talking to person in my spin class about her camera tripod?

Hi everyone

I go to a small spin class in the mornings before work and one of the members sets up her tripod camera in the corner and films the session.

I'm not sure if she's an influencer but I really prefer not being in somebody's video in this sort of gym class.

WITBA if I spoke to her about what the video is and if it's being shared or potentially not to share my face in it?

The gym class is quite small and this is really the only class I can attend early in the mornings before work & family life.

Thanks

Who decided letting dogs into Bunnings was a good idea?

I never imagined I'd have to avoid dog shit and creep by aggressive dogs while their owners held on to them while shopping for screws.
