No one here argues with facts, it is just a bunch of reaction images displaying disgust because, at the core this subreddit is not interested in intelligent thought or discussion at all. You KNOW they can not help their disorder and you KNOW most of them live their entire lives and never SA anybody. Yet your hatred, combined with thirst for Reddit Karma, drives you to spam dogwhistles like "TPD" but you are not actually developing your cause. You are making a joke out of yourselves.
I think the English lines are underrated. After the kitchen scene Rei and Shinji are talking to each other, being able to understand them without reading captions amplifies what you get out of the scene, it is more memorable (if you do not understand Japanese) and it actually feels like they are talking to you.
Spike Spencer (as Shinji) and Amanda Winn-Lee (as Rei) deliver these beautiful lines back and forth as Third Impact is starting:
"It would be better if I never existed, and I should just die too."
"Then why are you here?"
"Is it okay for me to be here?"
*Silence*
Then Spencer provides this amazing scream, which is almost as good as the Japanese one
I listen to the sub version and recognize the talent the Japanese voices give, of course it is much better than the English but that is not what I am trying to discuss, I know the sub is better but I believe the emotional impact is felt more when Rei, Yui, Gendo and Kaworu's voices are intelligible to the English ear. The sensations I get from the sub have never quite matched the sensations I feel from the dub. Episodes 25 and 26 are also much better when you are listening instead of reading, since most of it is philosophical therapy, why would you not want to hear this in English?
Spencer and Amanda's best work is near the ending of the film, the live action scenes are great much like the moments after between Shinji and Rei. This is until he starts talking to Kaworu as well, and they are teleporting around Earth, and Spencer delivers the "Still I want to see them again, because at the time, I knew my feelings were real" and the beautiful orchestra picks up, why do people call this trash when the lines are so great in English? Amanda's lines as Yui at the very end are my favorite "The power of imagination is the ability to create your own future, and the ability to create your own flow of time" Her entire speech as Shinji rejects instrumentality is able to be listened to with your monitor completely off, no reading required, and it still works! (although the visuals are something you do not wanna miss)
I am gonna be seeing End of Evangelion in theaters on July 22 and am bringing my partner who also enjoys dubs, we can deal with only having sub available; it is just unfortunate how underrated the dub is.
