"Dear George Washington: go f**k yourself, and your gross wooden teeth."
Or, alternatively, happy Fourth of July to everyone celebrating.

Fret buzz after set-up and fret dress. Absolutely mystified by it.
I bought a Sire Marcus Miller P5R a few months ago. It played pretty well out of the box, but the action was too high for my tastes, so I took it to my local tech for a set-up. I can do them myself, but it takes ages and stresses me out, so I'm happy to pay a pro to do it for me.
It played perfectly in their workshop. Took it home, and after a couple of days there was fret buzz on all strings, up and down the neck. I adjusted the truss rod myself but it made no difference, and using a straight-edge I could tell there were some uneven frets. So I took it back to the tech to get the frets evened out, and the set-up tweaked to match Sire's recommended action etc. Again, played perfectly well after, the action is lower but not super low, so I was happy.
But since then it's gone back to buzzing. All the strings have some buzz, but the worst is the G, which buzzes very badly between frets 2-5 and 9-13. The other strings buzz in the same regions. That sort of suggests to me that there's back-bow, but when I check the relief using the string (fretting at the neck joint and nut, then tapping against the neck in the middle of the string), it seems about right, a tiny bit of relief.
I'm stumped as to why this buzz is still happening the way it is. Is it possible it needs a shim under the neck joint, might there be another issue at play here?
Bruce Foxton reveals Parkinson’s diagnosis
Really gutting news. It's been obvious for a while that he's been struggling with something long-term, just from the cancellations this year and last. I hope he can keep the bugger at bay for as long as possible. Must be so frustrating for him, especially having to pull out of gigs.
Keep on bringing the noise while you can, Bruce. But look after yourself.
Have any other directors had as many tropes as James Nguyen?
And I don't just mean in the MST3KEU (Extended Universe. Gizmonic Institute didn't take over the European Union), I mean ever.
Obvious technical and competency issues aside, there are quite a lot. Off the top of my head:
- Obvious Hitchcock references (or theft)
- Main characters develop romantic relationship early on.
- First date, where man arrives in a suit with flowers.
- Big Tech.
- San Francisco and the Bay Area.
- Huge business deals with "cartoonishly round numbers".
- Male lead has a horny best friend who encourages his dating.
- Disaster strikes soon after main characters have sex for the first time (based on their interactions, I'm assuming ever).
- That house.
- And of course: driving and parking.
Quentin Tarantino is the biggest director I can think of that's extremely tropey. Any others?
Your Rascal modifications?
I bought a Rascal pretty soon after they came out. I wanted something short-scale, and it came along at the perfect time. It became my main bass for about 18 months, until I got my dream bass (Rickenbacker 4003S).
I pretty much exclusively used the bridge pickup, tone on full, and EQed it with some extra treble and mids. I like a bright sound that still has enough punch to cut through, and it did a pretty great job. It still gets used nowadays, but not really for gigs. It's just a fun thing to play.
I'm just curious to know what people have done to their Rascals, and how they sound now! I know someone on here posted a while ago about adding series/parallel/single-coil switches for each pickup, which is what got me wondering. So please share your mod jobs!
On about my 30th rewatch of Merlin's Shop, and I only just noticed this kid who walks right behind Grandpa Borgnine.
Right at the start of the movie, when the power goes out and the kid jumps onto the sofa, a completely different kid walks behind Grandpa Borgnine. At first I thought it might be a reflection, but nope, different clothes, and walks in and out.
Amazing how many tiny mistakes like this go unnoticed, even when a movie gets riffed to death.
This musical moment was just perfection.
It's the best Bond theme there is, and I'll die on that hill.
I was just around the corner today, so I thought I'd make a quick stop at this historic building.
These studios were, of course, where Unknown Pleasures and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" were recorded.
It's also only about 50 yards from the site of the 1967 Stockport Air Disaster, with memorials at the site for the 72 people who were killed.
Last week saw the 59th anniversary of the Stockport Air Disaster. I was in the area today and took some photos of the memorials in the sunshine.
On 4th June 1967, a chartered British Midland Canadair C4 Argonaut on approach to Manchester Airport suffered flameout of all four engines due to fuel starvation, caused by a flawed cross-feed system.
Despite crashing yards from the centre of Stockport (a town near Manchester with a population of over 100,000 people), the plane came down in a small open patch of ground called Hopes Carr. Some witnesses claimed that the pilot steered the plane towards it at the last second, avoiding surrounding buildings. The crash site is only a couple of hundred yards from the town hall.
Many passengers survived the impact, but due to seats coming loose and causing severe leg injuries, they were unable to escape the post-crash fire. Thanks to first responders and members of the public, 12 people survived, but 72 couldn't be saved.
It seems like this disaster has been largely forgotten in the area. People I've spoken to around here aren't aware of it at all, despite it being the fourth worst air accident in terms of loss of life in UK history. I'm glad the memorials have been looked after and added to over the years.
Original Abba members celebrate expansion of London education programme
This explains why Benny and Frida were at Voyage the other night. It was part of a programme for local schools, to encourage and help youngsters in the area pursue careers in the arts.
I love how they're giving back to the local area around the Arena, which is one that's still pretty deprived despite significant regeneration over the past 15 years.
What's the most bizarre thing you've seen in a riffed movie that went entirely unacknowledged?
This moment in Champagne and Bullets somehow escaped mention from the guys. John De Hart, on his wedding night, hands a glass of champagne off to someone whose hand is in shot. Did Wings Hauser sit in on their special night?
I've listed my ticket for 76/26/50 for resale, if anyone's still looking (See tickets, face value)
Unfortunately I'm recovering from surgery, and slower than expected, so I've put my ticket for tomorrow night on See's ticket exchange at face value. Search it up and there should be at least one ticket available.
The only condition: go and have a blast.
King Kong (a.k.a. Snail) mlems her way up the tower.
'Twas beauty killed the mlem.
I wonder if Critter or Mike Pipper got a pangram in Spelling Bee yesterday.
Has anyone else had a haematoma as a result of a fissurectomy?
I'm currently 4 days post-op after a surgical fissurectomy (with sutures) and Botox injections, to treat a chronic fissure (3 years - 4 previous debridement and Botox procedures failed to cure it).
From the first time I gently felt around the area the morning after the operation, it's been hugely swollen down one side. This struck me as a little odd, as the fissure was located at the 12 o'clock position, but I figured the body responds in strange ways. As time has passed, the overall pain has reduced somewhat but is still severe, especially when there's any pressure on that side, and it's more of a dull ache than the sharp sting of a fissure.
It now feels like a very hard lump protruding out, about the size of a grape, so to me it seems like a haematoma. I've had one before but nowhere near that large. There's also no discharge, it doesn't feel warm to the touch, no fever etc., and it emerged pretty rapidly post-op, so I doubt it's an infection.
This is sort of the last swing of the bat at fixing this condition for me. My consultant doesn't think there are any other options left if this doesn't work, and I'm on a final warning at work - any more absences and I'm basically toast.
So, has anyone else had this as a post-op symptom before, and if so how did it affect your recovery? Did you need further treatment or did it clear up quickly on its own?
Appeal hearing scheduled close to surgery date - what are my rights to reschedule?
I'm appealing against a final written warning based on sickness absences. I submitted my appeal within the one week deadline on 6th May.
On 14th May, I was informed that the appeal meeting would be held today, 18th May. I arranged for a colleague to accompany me, but due to a family emergency they can no longer attend today. They're unable to make a meeting tomorrow due to their workload, even if they're in work.
On 20th May, I have a surgical procedure for a long-term condition which is the cause of my recent absences (and meets the criteria for a disability). This has been scheduled for over two months, and work have been aware of it from the start. The procedure has a two week recovery period, for which my employer has already approved medical leave.
I asked on Friday to postpone the meeting until after this recovery period, but have yet to receive a reply (with only a couple of hours until the meeting).
If I'm unable to be accompanied today or tomorrow, and am then unavailable for two weeks, what are my rights when it comes to a postponement so that I can be accompanied? In my view, scheduling a meeting so close to a planned surgical procedure gives me no leeway and this should have been factored into the scheduling in the first place, given that they knew my availability.
UPDATE: they have rejected my request to postpone the meeting until a later date. They moved the meeting back to this afternoon as they still hadn't responded to my request until a few minutes before the meeting was due to start. I will have to go unaccompanied.
[Ios] Auto-subtitles on videos have appeared, are usually totally incorrect, hide subtitles already on the videos, and I can't find a way to turn them off. Version 2026.18.0.629082
This new feature needs a way to be turned off. I've checked through all my setting but there's no way I can find to turn them off. It's absolutely awful.
New to the sub, so posting my current Focus: a 2017 ST-Line.
Got this about 18 months ago, about 31000 miles on it (I've only added about 4000 of those). It's the third Focus I've had, after a Mk1.5 and a Mk2 that I loved but were getting expensive to keep running.
I then couldn't find a Focus in my price range so got a Citroën C4, and it was... a car. It got me around. But I felt no joy driving it. It had worse body roll than the SS Eastland. When that too started falling apart, I started having a brief look around and this Focus was the very first car I saw on a major car supermarket site. Booked a test drive right away, while looking around to check it was a good deal, which it very much was. The test drive was a formality.
I've just never driven a Focus and not been impressed by the handling, the smooth drive, and pretty much everything else. This one has the 1.5l EcoBoost engine, which is perfect for what I need and gets me much better mileage than my 1.6l Citroën, while having plenty more power. And zero turbo lag. And the colour is gorgeous, especially with the body kit. If I was buying new I wouldn't have chosen an ST-Line, but the spoilers etc. do look good.
My only minor quibbles: the boot is smaller than older models; the fuel tank is similarly small; and the Focus still doesn't have a driver's window button that will return it all the way up with one pull of it.
