Un/popular opinion: Popular music hasnt advanced since the Beatles

No idea if this is or is not a popular opinion here. But it really seems to me that the Beatles are still cutting edge when it comes to popular music. Their melodies and harnonies are still more complex than 90% of modern music. George Martin's arrangements are worthy of any modern producer. Their ability to experiment with instruments and samples while keeping songs listenable with catchy hooks is still unique.

The main differences now are modern compression, and electronic sampling. Neither of which is a particular advancement, musically. Nor is quantizing or autotune or any other computer wizardry. What it does is bring mediocre music up to a mean. It doesnt improve high quality music at all, in fact it strips it of life.

Didnt mean to rant about modern music. This post is simply to say that the Beatles still sound relevant and fresh musically, to me at least.

[The one band that could have pushed music forward in a radical way was Radiohead. Im not sure they managed it but I appreciate the effort.]

Black people need to stop supporting people just because theyre black

I dont see any other races coming out to protest for fraudsters and criminals, just to show racial solidarity. Its such a bad look for everyone involved and leads others to make unfair generalisations. If Jason Arday was white or Asian they would be a pariah. They would be looked on with shame by those of the same race. And its the same in the US with guys shot by police, like Michael Brown who punched a cop and tried to take his gun which led to violent protests. Or OJ Simpson back in the day.

I understand most people have some kind of ethnic bias, but independent thought also has to come in, where you judge someone as an individual.

(To be clear, as per the mod rules, I am NOT claiming this is something inherent to black people. Its a cultural thing.)

Western culture has become so pussified

Im not claiming to be Chuck Norris but damn our culture has had the masculunity drained from it. I grew up in the 90s and 2000s and every month there would be a new action movie, a kickass video game and a hip hop album. There was never a shortage of testosterone in entertainment. Now when we get something like Top Gun Maverick it feels like a freak occurence.

This isnt some incel rant, Im not blaming women. I think Its more ideology and politics than anything else. How is it possible we went from Arnie and Stallone to Tom Holland and Chalamet? Or Biggie and Tupac to Drake? Too much masculinity became unacceptable. Its dangerous, its right wing. As pro-capitalist as I am this cannot just be the result of a free market. Theres been a mindset shift in those with their hands on the money tap.

Black Mesa is the definitive Half-Life experience

Im sure this is a very unpopular opinion. But Im replaying Black Mesa and I really get the feeling this is the ultimate Half Life experience. By which I mean, if you were to show a newbie what its all about, you'd go for this over HL, 2, E1 or E2 or any other mod. This is close to exactly what the og developers imagined when they were making HL. Its a perfect blend of action, horror, puzzles, and in-game storytelling. And the visuals absolutely complement the story. Each level/area is so visually distinct. Of course Xen is stunning, but so is the reactor lab, Black Mesa outdoors... every area. They always add to the atmosphere of the story.

The difference between past generations and the current one is overstated.

As a Man United fan who grew up watching the 99 Treble winners it annoys me how easily theyre dismissed in every conversation about PL all-time great teams. They point to the number of points, losses and goals etc compared to the City and Liverpool teams of the 2020s. We strategically rested players for certain games and accepted losses and draws so we would be at full strength at key times. Our midfield of Giggs, Keane, Scholes and Becks is still the best I've seen in the prem.

The idea that football in the 90s was the technical stone ages is nonsense. I agree that there was less equality across the league in terms of talent. But we were brilliant, technically and tactically. Fergie proved his chops by building winning teams through the 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s. He would still be winning the league today if he was around.

There have always been brilliant technical players and great tacticians. Because Pep and short passing are now in vogue, doesnt mean this is some new plane of humanity, tactical ubermensches. Rinus Michels, Arrigo Sacchi, Bill Shankly, would come into today's game and dominate just like they did. And many players of that age, Pele, Puskas, George Best, Maradona, Garrincha etc would do the same.

England's only World Cup win in 66 was the result of tactical innovation. In fact Alf Ramsay's 4-1-2-1-2 wingless wonders is very modern. Its similar to the mid 2000s Milan team and Argentina this world cup. Tactics are cyclical. Theres isnt a clean upwards trajectory of evolution. Overall fitness and technicality perhaps. But still, the most physical and technical players 60 years ago would be monsters today.

Reddit needs to have mods for the mods

Im tired of getting banned or muted from subs simply because one mod dislikes my post or takes offense to me debating them about it. Its so fucking pathetic and petty to have these little Napoleons running around, with zero oversight. It shouldnt be the prerogative of individual people whether someone is banned or not, there needs to be a proper process including an appeals system.

Suspected fraudster Jason Arday

Not sure if this is strictly appropriate for this sub since he hasnt been charged with a crime. But its an amusing story out of England. The youngest ever black professor, at the no1 university in the country, Cambridge. Now has resigned after accusations of plagiarism, plus many spurious claims. Heres some of them:

Could not speak before 11 and not read or write before 18

Did his PHD while suffering from a brain tumour

Survived testicular cancer

Survived an "unrecoverable" car accident and locked-in syndrome

Ran 600 miles in six days

Ran 30 marathons in 35 days despite suffering an epileptic fit and fractured leg

Raised £5 million for charity

Installed water in Africa (WaterAid said they do not send volunteers abroad)

Masked men threatened him at knifepoint to resign his post, and a pig's head was sent to his home

Was a semi-pro football and snooker player

Was in the documentary Seven Up (he was born 20 years too late)

Published a book called ‘Being Young, Black and Male: Challenging the Dominant Discourse’ (which doesnt exist)

Was a visiting professor at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, the University of Glasgow and Ohio State University (they have all denied this)

Last movie scene that made you cry?

Just watched Toy Story 2 and the Jessie "when somebody loved me" choked me up.

Low birthrates are not because people arent having enough sex. Its the opposite.

I've seen plenty of people who attribute a lot of country's low birthrates to gen z's supposed squeamishness around sex. This is 100% missing the point.

Casual sex is what has ruined birthrates. Sex has become totally detached from its function. For most people its a purely recreational pastime, its like a sport. Or its like eating a delicious meal we order off the menu of Tinder. Porn has facilitated this mindset shift. We've seen so many dicks in pussies that we're numb to it now, it has no real value to us beyond momentary pleasure.

If the next generation actually were to be put off casual sex that would signal a positive shift, towards healthy birthrates and families.

Spain will be the first country to totally lose its cultural identity.

Spain has always struggled to have a strong singular national identity, with the Catalonia + Basque split from the mainland. And now they have naturalised 500,000 immigrants and allowed a de facto land invasion without military intervention.

No entry requirements, no placing of immigrants around the country to avoid ghettos. A left wing country that is suspicious of patriotism. An economy in the toilet, millions of unemployed. A population who are reproducing well below replacement levels.

Spain are speedrunning the collapse of national identity.

The 1966 wingless wonders. Could work really well for our squad!

Our main issue is keeping possession against high-level opposition and this solves that by crowding the centre. We arent blessed with fantastic out-and-out wingers right now, but we do have good attacking full backs like TAA, Spence, James and Lewis Hall.

Rice plays the Nobby Styles holding role. Anderson and Mainoo, and Bellingham fill the rest of the diamond. Kane and possibly Saka up top together, Kane to drop back and Saka to stretch defences.

Ramsay's England went a full year unbeaten and obviously won the WC against an elite West Germany with this formation. Yes times have changed but on the flipside not following modern conventions could give us the element of surprise.

Robert De Niro - one of the most misunderstood actors on this sub. He is not a one-note gangster actor. He has a lot of range.

Triangle (2009)

Im a sucker for sci fi/horror films with a clever plot. Its based on a Greek myth (Sisyphus). Its got a ton of schlocky action and gore. And a pretty hot woman running around. Its not a masterpiece but its good.

Why do Donna and James whisper all their goddamn dialogue with each other?

Its driving me nuts. Theyre having conversations in their living room, and out in the middle of the woods, and theyre whispering every word. SPEAK NORMALLY

Performances that are overlooked because of the type of film theyre in?

I think Michael Biehn gives a perfect performance in The Terminator. Hes a strung-out PTSD soldier whos come through time to protect the woman he loves, but has never met. Hes scared but brave and resourceful, hes clearly experienced a lot of pain but is detached from it - "you can disconnect it". The moment when he reveals his feelings for Sarah feels very raw and authentic.

Doom 3 - still one of the most atmospheric shooters ever.

I love the attention to detail of this game. The way you slowly get the story fed to you through the environment, emails etc. The whole game just feels so oppressive. The claustrophobia, the lighting, the jump scares, the music. Its incredibly intense. The fact it was made at a time where memory was limited means they squeezed the absolute maximum out of both the graphics and the maps.
