I think Bioshock 1 would benefit greatly from a remake
I recently played Bioshock 1 for the first time and I can’t help but feel slightly disappointed by it. Going into this game, I did know about the plot twist but my issues are more than that. I get that the game came out in 2007, it’s almost 20 years old which is why I think it could benefit from a remake. I found the gameplay to be slightly clunky and the story to be very short.
Looking at gameplay, I thought that the weapon transition could be smoother and also the health and eve resources to be very fleeting. I never felt satisfied whenever I picked up alcohol, cigarettes, candy bars etc. The core gameplay I thought was good but felt very clearly outdated. This is my biggest reason why I would like a remake to see modern gameplay elements be used for the game, particularly the Remake Resident Evil games. This also extends to some elements of the UI, I like the aesthetic of the UI being 1960s theme but sometimes it was annoying trying to read the map.
As for the story, as I said earlier I knew about the plot twist so I was more focused on the presentation. And I found the story to be really short which affected how I viewed the plot. The surprise of "Would you kindly" to Frank Fontaine's reveal was about 2 minutes when its something that I felt should have been longer. Honestly I think that if I did not know about the twist before hand then the reveal would have gone over my head. This also affected how I saw both Andrew Ryan and Atlas as pretty weak characters. They have a lot of potential but we have so few moments of them that I do not feel too strongly about them. I think a remake could let the reveal be more impactful and not feel as rushed
Overall I did enjoy my time playing Bioshock. I did not sing any praises in this post which gives off the idea that I did not like my time so I want to make it clear that I did. I do think this is a good game and can understand the elements that made it so beloved. I like the setting, the worldbuilding, the vibes are immaculate. Those things are timeless even after playing this game for the first time 20 years after its release. But I also think that it has some dated elements and would benefit tremendously with a remake.
