Hey! I am currently reading Middlemarch by George Elliott for school. I have re-read the prelude numerous times (even alongside audiobooks) but I cannot seem to grasp anything they are saying. Am I illiterate or is it supposed to be a difficult read?

I’m an English minor and have read classics such as The Picture of Dorian Gray, Mrs. Dalloway, East of Eden and The Secret History perfectly well. For further context, last year I took an English course (and sadly failed) because I could not understand the material, we read Lysistrata, The School for Scandal (I could understand this!) and The Rover by Aphra Behn.

Lmk in the comments some tips on how to read the middlemarch, if these texts are supposed to be difficult, if I’m illiterate or if I’m not at the same reading level.
