Does anyone actually use the UQ recommended textbooks?

Every semester I'm told to buy like five books for each unit and I've probably used maybe one of them properly. Half the time the lecture notes or course materials are more useful anyway. Feels like a bit of a waste of money but also don't want to regret skipping them

What's a money decision you made in your 20s that you'd actually tell your younger self to do differently?

Whether that's renting longer than expected, jumping into property too early, ignoring super, or something that actually paid off unexpectedly. Real examples only.

What's your go to brand for fittings these days and has it changed over the years.

Everyone has strong opinions on this one, keen to hear what people are actually running with on the job at the moment.

What's the worst thing your job provider has made you do for no real reason?

Mine had me apply to jobs that did not even exist just to hit a quota.

At what age do you think students benefit most from taking responsibility for their own homework?

At the moment I usually remind them about homework, check that it's been completed and help if they're stuck. Part of me thinks that's the right approach, but I also don't want them relying on me for every assignment.

From a teacher's perspective, at what age do students usually benefit from taking responsibility for their own homework and organisation? Is it something that should happen gradually, or is there a stage where parents should really start stepping back?

What's the most useful piece of advice a senior plumber ever gave you?

Every tradie seems to remember a few bits of advice that stuck with them for years. Not necessarily complicated advice either. Sometimes it's a simple comment that changes how you approach the job forever. What was yours?

What's the biggest win you've had during your job search this year, even if it wasn't getting a job?

Job searching can be a long process and sometimes progress isn't always obvious. Could be gaining confidence in interviews, finishing training, improving your resume, getting more callbacks, or simply staying motivated. What's been your biggest positive step forward recently?

If your lease ended tomorrow, would you sign another one?

Simple question, but I think the answers would be interesting. Ignoring loyalty discounts and special offers, based purely on your actual experience so far, would you do it again? And what would be the main reason for your answer?

Gym at UQ vs external commercial gyms

I am thinking about signing up for a membership at the UQ fitness centre since it is right on campus but the student rates still seem a bit pricey compared to a standard gym down the road. Is the equipment and pool facility worth it or should I just stick to an ordinary commercial gym

Do you still keep any old EB Games receipts, pre-order bonuses or collectibles?

Found an old pre order bonus while cleaning out a cupboard and it instantly took me back.

For people who salary package an EV, what ended up being different from your original calculations?

When comparing EVs, there are lots of spreadsheets and calculators involved. I'm intrested whether your actual ownership experience matched what you expected financially. Were there costs or savings that surprised you once you'd had the car for a while?

What's something Australians regularly overpay for without realising there are cheaper alternatives?

Could be groceries, utilities, insurance, mobile plans, banking products, anything really. Interested in things that are common enough that most people probably don't even question the cost anymore.

Has anyone ever regretted borrowing less than the bank offered?

iYou always hear stories about people stretching themselves too far. Interested in the opposite. Has anyone played it safe and later wished they'd borrowed a bit more when prices moved?

What’s the biggest misconception people have about being a teacher in Australia?

Before talking to a few teachers I genuinely thought most of the job happened in the classroom. The more I learn, the more it seems like teaching involves a huge amount of work people never see.

I swear every Australian has a Hungry Jack's story.

Not necessarily a good one. Could be a road trip stop, a disastrous order, a late night feed, a weird encounter or something that would only make sense to another Australian. What's yours?

What’s the dumbest thing you convinced yourself you needed because of an EB Games preorder bonus?

I was thinking about this recently and realised I've definitely bought games earlier than planned because they threw in a steelbook, keyring, poster or some other random item I'd completely forgotten about six months later. At the time it felt essential. Looking back, not so much. What's the preorder bonus that somehow worked on you?

Are there any decent clubs on campus for people who aren't into heavy drinking?

Looking to join a few social groups next semester to meet some new people but it feels like a lot of the events are just pub crawls. Keen for anything focused on hobbies, board games, or just casual weekend meetups instead

What's a money lesson you only learned because you ignored good advice?

I was thinking recently about how many financial lessons I technically knew before I actually learned them. People had told me. I'd read about them. I'd heard the warnings. The problem was I didn't properly understand them until I made the mistake myself. Looking back, some of the most valuable financial lessons I've learned came from doing exactly what people told me not to do. What's one lesson you had to learn the hard way?
