To anyone out there feeling lonely, I’d advise starting a business.

Even if it’s small, at least you’ll have a little company.

If Rose Quartz had fallen in love with a female human instead of Greg, how would Steven had been born?

Apparently the Crewniverse said that Rose shapeshifted a womb for Steven so she could give birth to him, so presumably she also shapeshifted a vagina, Fallopian tubes, and eggs.

It follows that if she wanted to, she could’ve shapeshifted a penis, testicles, and sperm if she wanted.

Does that mean that if she’d chosen to have a baby with a female human instead, her human partner would’ve ended up carrying her child? How would the whole “giving up her physical form” thing have worked then?

Do people with schizophrenia ever see people going “through” their hallucinations?

I know that visual hallucinations aren’t as common as auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia, but do some people ever see real people or moving objects passing through their imagined ones?

Like if you were imagining having a conversation with someone stood right in front of you, and someone else came up and walked in front of you in the same place as your hallucination, would you see them walking through the hallucination like a ghost? Or would your mind fill in the blanks with some other solution, like the real person walking around the hallucination even if they didn’t?

Do you ever ruin something for yourself by writing about it?

Not even in the sense of projecting your personal experiences/traumas onto other characters or writing something particularly disturbing or scary, but like if you give a character a particular negative experience you ruin it for yourself even if you’ve never experienced it yourself.

I wrote about a character having trauma related to cyanide, especially the almond smell, which led to him avoiding almonds, marzipan, Bakewell tarts, etc. I’ve personally never had an issue with almonds or related confectionery myself but now I can’t look at or smell Bakewell tarts or marzipan without thinking of what he went through.

TFW being a medical professional (of sorts) ruins whump tropes for you

I’m a nursing assistant in a hospital, which means I’m carrying out a lot of the day-to-day personal care for patients on the wards - washing, dressing, feeding, toileting, etc. I’m also a lifelong whump fan, have been since I was a little kid, and a good part of my career path and interests have been influenced by the medical research I did to aid in my whump writing (see [this old post](https://www.reddit.com/r/FanFiction/s/668VVXkMUZ) - thought a lot has changed since then).

But my job now has made it harder to enjoy a lot of the hospital or medical based whump tropes I used to read and use a lot. To give some example:

  1. The bridal carry is one of my absolute favourite tropes. Shocker, it’s never used IRL as that can throw your back out (we’re given a LOT of training on moving and handling).

  2. Sharing a hospital bed. Brief cuddling aside, it’s not allowed for a full night’s sleep for infection control reasons, and we might provide you with a camp bed if you’re lucky, but only if you’re in a cubicle and not in a bay, and if you’re in a cubicle you probably have some kind of infectious disease so still no sharing hospital beds.

  3. Nurses/NAs sitting by the bedside for long periods to keep company. Nice in the fics and maybe it happens in departments I’m not in, but on my ward, we are stretched far too thin to spend more than a few minutes at a time with any one patient, just enough to take you to and from the bathroom. The only time we stay with a patient is if we legitimately have to, like if they’re a wanderer with dementia and need to be on a 1:1.

  4. Ringing the call bell and a nurse comes immediately. In reality it’s more like 3 minutes, though I personally try to answer as quickly as possible because I’m autistic and I despise the sound of that damn bell.

  5. Only saw this one a couple of times in fics but visitors bringing sippy cups to patients confined to hospital beds to make drinking easier. Even saw one where the nurse praised its as “innovative”! In real life, no nurse in the world wouldn’t have thought of this already - we keep plenty of beakers and straws on hand for patients, it’s terribly commonplace.

Hospital work and caretaking IRL is so much more practical and less tender than it is in fanfics, and this isn’t meant to say that people shouldn’t read or write or enjoy them, fiction is fiction because real life isn’t as fun. Just that every time I read about nursing care in a hospital now, I can only map it onto what would actually happen in my work.

Advice about possibly rejecting my firm choice

So I applied to medicine as a graduate, at Warwick, Swansea, and Newcastle, and got interviewed at all of them. Warwick rejected me outright and the other two put me on a waiting list before giving me a decision.

Newcastle is my dream option, as it’s my Alma mater and I adore the university and city. To give myself the best chances of getting in, I applied for standard entry medicine rather than graduate entry, because the UCAT thresholds were lower and the competition for GEM places is fierce - this is relevant.

I got rejected from Newcastle after being pooled and I was pretty bummed, however, Swansea offered me an unconditional place and I was super happy to get onto any medical course. I accepted the offer on UCAS and started making plans there.

However, earlier this week, Newcastle contacted me and presumably other candidates stating that although they couldn’t make me an offer at present, they were still impressed with my interview performance and I had the option to fill out a form expressing my willingness to be contacted if a place did open up on A-Level results day.

Filling out the form wouldn’t affect my place at Swansea and if Newcastle rejects me again then no harm no foul, but it complicates things if Newcastle were to offer me a place after all. How would it work? Could I just reject my place at Swansea and accept it at Newcastle like that? Given my way I’d choose Newcastle in a heartbeat, but I don’t want to mess anything up and end up with no place at all.

Before anyone asks questions about funding, I’ll be upfront and say that funding isn’t an issue or a deciding factor for me, so ignore that.

Two crows were in a field when they noticed a figure that looked like a man in the distance.

"See that over there? What is that?" asks the first crow.

The second crow takes a long look and says, "That's a scarecrow."

"How can you tell it's a scarecrow and not a person?"

"Look at its hand," says the second crow. "No cellphone."

What’s a discontinued makeup product that you still mourn to this day?

Mine is the Lasting Finish lipstick from Rimmel in shade 45, part of their Kate Moss collection from last decade. I remember finding 45 back in 2022 and it was my favourite lipstick ever, the formula was so creamy and comfortable and the colour was immaculate. It’s the only lipstick I’ve ever properly finished, i.e wasn’t just broken or lost.

Still hasn’t been duped to this day.

What’s your makeup product that got away?

Which composers love singers?

I recently shared a thought with a friend and my teacher that similar to how you can tell when a fashion designer loves women, you can tell when a composer loves singers.

Alexander L’Estrange is one of them. Jason Robert Brown is (arguably) not.

Which composers love singers to you?
