AITAH for telling my mom she shouldn't complain about hosting when she refuses to set basic boundaries?
My mom had a friend over the other night, and she went all out. She spent hours in the kitchen making fresh pizza from scratch, bought all the drinks, and spent ages cleaning up. Afterward, she was completely exhausted and started complaining to me about how tired she was from doing all that work. She told me that her friends coming over wasn’t that enjoyable.
I told her straight up that she should have set some boundaries instead of taking on all that extra effort. I explained how my friends and I do things: whenever I host, everyone brings their own food or orders takeaway, and we split the money down to the exact penny. My job as host basically starts and ends with providing tap water, coffee, and taking out the trash. I told her our way keeps things zero-stress and low-cost so no one ends up burnt out. My friends love it this way and we have made it normal in our group.. I saw online that it’s a Swedish tradition called knytkalas where guests bring their own foods and share them around.
She didn’t take that well at all. She said it’s just not a good thing to make guests bring their own food and drinks, and that a host shouldn't be asking guests to do that.
Now she's annoyed with me for criticising her setup, but I still think she's making her own life difficult by refusing to set limits. AITA for telling her she brought the exhaustion on herself, or is she right that making guests bring their own stuff isn't a good way to host?
