Environment Modeling from an early version to the current one—— Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements

A little before-and-after from the Wood Domain Environment in Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements.

The Wood Domain is a pretty important place in Elise's story — it's where she grew up after being taken in by the Wood Priest, and where she eventually met the young dragon Pipi🐉

A lot of the environment here is built around the feeling of being surrounded by nature. Since the Wood Domain is tied to Elise's early years, we wanted the area to feel peaceful, but with a little loneliness underneath.

I spent 2 years getting this game to where it is now —— Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements

I found some old screenshots from when I first started making the game trailer.

Looking at them side by side is kind of crazy. A lot of things have changed since then, including the art, UI, and plenty of things that probably aren't obvious from these screenshots.

What do you think of these changes?

btw my game is in demo now if anyone's interested

Element Reaction #4 — Fire + Earth = Trap Spirit 💥🔥 | Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements

Fire + Earth is all about turning the environment into a weapon. 🔥🌍

When Fire interacts with Earth terrain, it creates an Earth elemental object and grants a damage buff.

But when Fire + Earth objects react, they summon a Trap Spirit. The Trap Spirit waits for an enemy to enter its range. Once triggered, it explodes, dealing damage and applying two effects:

🔥 Burning — takes damage each turn

🌿 Wither — lowers elemental resistance

And there's one more reward: when an enemy affected by the trap dies, you gain temporary Armor.

Using Fire to interact with the environment, luring enemies into the traps, and setting off chain explosions that wipe out entire groups.

With the right roguelite build, you can turn the whole battlefield into your playground. 💥

Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements is a turn-based tactical roguelite centered around elemental reactions, featuring 5 elements, 20 elemental reactions, and randomized maps.

The Steam Demo is now available if you'd like to try it yourself!

Dream scene in Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements — Ancient Dragon Ruins

We’ve added a new scene to the demo for Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements, called Ancient Dragon Ruins.
It takes place in Elise’s dream, featuring a large dragon skeleton and ruined landscapes that hint at Pipi’s backstory.
We included this scene to show off the scale of the environment, and also wanted players to test the elemental chain reactions early on.

Wasn‘t expecting Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements to end up on 4Gamer and Bahamut

One of the coolest things that happened at ChinaJoy:

Both well-known gaming outlets 4Gamer and Bahamut stopped by to try Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements, and later featured the game on their websites!

It was really cool seeing them spend time with the demo, and just as nice chatting with everyone who stopped by the booth over the past few days.

Now it's back to making the game better. 🐉

Element Reaction #3 —— Fire + Wood: Burn the Battlefield 🔥🌿 | Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements

Fire + Wood is a little different from the other elemental reactions in my game.

The result depends on what you ignite.

🔥 Fire + Wood terrain creates a burning field that continuously damages anyone standing in the flames.

🌿 Fire + Wood objects summon a Flame Spirit that attacks nearby enemies with Fire damage. Every attack also releases Wood elemental energy, allowing it to interact with the environment and trigger even more elemental reactions.

With the right roguelite build, those chain reactions can spread across the battlefield until everything is on fire.

[Devlog#2] We made some improvement to the demo, and...working on new things for Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements

Hey everyone!

Since the demo went live, we've received a huge amount of feedback. (Seriously, demo is my dedication!)

We've already started working through a lot of it, and I thought I'd share a few of the bigger changes we've been making recently.

One of the biggest updates is the Skill Preview. Potential Elemental Reactions can now be previewed before casting a skill, and tiles inside the skill's effective range are now much easier to distinguish from those outside it.

We've also been polishing a lot of smaller QoL details. The Alchemy menu now remembers the last recipe that was opened instead of jumping back to the full recipe list every time materials are checked.

At the same time, work has started on the next area: the Earth Domain. It's built around a desert-inspired environment, and a new group of monsters is slowly coming together—including scorpions, grasshoppers, and a few others that are still in progress.

Still plenty left to build, but it's always satisfying when another piece of the world finally falls into place.

Improvements to the illustration — Before vs. After | Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements

As the title says, these are two versions of our illustrations.

We adjusted the character's eyes, lighting, finer details, and the overall atmosphere to make everything feel more polished.

Designing an elite enemy for the Earth Domain in Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements 🦂

This is one of the elite enemies you'll encounter in the Earth Domain.

He has a very high movement range, but there's a catch — he can't break obstacles, and even the smallest object will stop him in his tracks.

The real threat is his Scorpion Venom. Every time he hits you, you'll gain a stack of venom. Whenever you use a skill, each stack adds a 10% chance that your remaining Action Points will be reduced to zero.

What do you think of this kind of enemy? Would you take him out as quickly as possible, or try to play around him?

Element Reaction #2 — Fire 🔥+ Water💧 = Summon a Stormcloud Spirit 👁️💨 | Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements

When a Fire magic reacts with a Water element object (or vice versa), it creates a Stormcloud Spirit 💨👁️

Unlike a normal area attack, the Stormcloud Spirit will track nearby enemies and attack them for 2 turns, making it a great tool for controlling the battlefield and dealing consistent damage.

Since it actually tracks enemies, I thought it deserved an eye! So for the demo, I gave it blinking eyes to make it feel like a tiny creature hunting its target

Our artist loves lizards... so they ended up all over our game Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements🦎

We've shared a lot of our combat system in Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements before, today I wanted to show something a little different.

Our artist is a huge reptile enthusiast. He has several real lizards at home, so it didn't take long before tiny lizards started sneaking into our game too.

https://preview.redd.it/oz7yg4ib7zeh1.png?width=809&format=png&auto=webp&s=56df8236a4c03872dd99fffe4ce23d7c560d54a2

The potion shop is run by a little lizard butler. In the garden, another tiny lizard helps you plant seeds with a single click. Even the Training Grounds has its own hardworking lizard assistant. They're just small details, but I think they make the world feel a little more alive.

Beyond the lizards, he's put a lot of care into making every creature and character fit its region, environment, and abilities. We wanted each area of the magical world to have its own distinct atmosphere.

Honestly, I think it'd be very difficult to convince our artist to make a fantasy game without adding a few little lizards. 😂

Element Reaction #1 — Fire + Lightning = A Massive Explosion 💥 | Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements ⭐

When a Lightning element object is struck by Fire magic (or vice versa), it triggers a massive AoE explosion, making it perfect for clearing groups of enemies or dealing huge burst damage to bosses.

The fun part is how roguelite builds enhance these reactions. With the right treasures and upgrades, one explosion can set off another... and another... until the entire battlefield is wiped out in a spectacular chain reaction.

Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements is a turn-based tactical roguelite built around elemental reactions. It features five elements, 20 unique elemental reactions, and highly randomized battlefields that encourage creative strategies and experimentation.

The Steam Demo is now live if you'd like to try it yourself! I'd love to hear what you think after playing.

Sometimes the Training Grounds turns into a giant elemental explosion simulator

We added the Training Grounds to the demo so players could experiment with different builds and relic combinations without having to restart a run over and over again.
I thought it would mostly be used for testing.
Turns out the players are much better at it than I am😂
Some of the chain reactions they've come up with are absolutely insane, and I love seeing how creatively everyone uses the system.
If you had unlimited setup, what ridiculous combo would you try first?

u/SnooCats4275 — 1 month ago

Which Steam capsule would catch your attention first?

I'm currently testing a new Steam capsule for my turn-based roguelite Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements, and I'd really appreciate some honest feedback.

For this version, I tried using a completely different CG from the game with a very different color palette. As a player myself, I often realize that different color tones can completely change whether I click on a game or not, so I wanted to experiment with that.

I'm also planning to keep refining it—for example, making the witch and the little dragon stand out more.

If these two versions appeared in your steam queue, which one would you click first, and why?

A single turn can trigger absolute chaos.Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements Free demo tomorrow (July 15)!

We've been working on Witch & Dragon: Hope of Elements, a turn-based tactical roguelite built around elemental reactions.

Instead of simply dealing damage, Fire, Water, Thunder, Wood, and Earth interact with each other, the battlefield, and enemies. A single move can trigger huge chain reactions if you position everything well.

One of our favorite parts of the recent playtest was watching players discover combos and builds that even we hadn't anticipated.

Our free Steam Demo launches tomorrow (July 15), and we'd love to hear what tactical players think about the combat and build variety.

If you enjoy experimenting with synergies, planning turns, and watching everything explode in the right order, we'd love for you to give it a try!

Feedback is always welcome. 🙂
