Omega Seamaster Calendar advertisement from September 1959

Omega Seamaster Calendar advertisement from September 1959

Another brilliant advertisement, this time for a vintage Seamaster calendar from Reader’s Digest, September 1959 (the month my parents were born!), picked up on eBay and added to my growing collection of vintage watch advertisements.

Typography is a real interest of mine, so I collect across a few formats: banknotes, stocks, bonds, advertisements, newspapers from significant events (VE Day, the death of Churchill, September 12 2001, the day my son was born, Midnight Hammer), books on type, that sort of thing.

Omega Seamaster advertisement from December 1961

I love collecting all things Omega and related to or adjacent to watches I own. As a typography nerd I love old advertisements and do pay for them. I also enjoy sharing parts of my collection with other collectors

Is an Omega x Swatch a good watch for a 13 year old?

I’m thinking of getting my son an Omega x Swatch for his 13th birthday. I’m wondering if it’s an appropriate watch for a young man and if it would be durable enough.

The only slight hitch is his mother has fully enforced alienation protocols and we have not really spoken in almost a decade. It’s been sporadic and extremely strained.

It’s a bit of a peace offering as well as hopefully something we can maybe reconnect over.

As much as I’d love to go and get him a fully fledged Omega, I do not think that’s appropriate till he’s 21, as that is following a bit of a family tradition where a Swiss watch is the 21st gift.

I just want to get him something nice, memorable and maybe even if he won’t use it now he may in the future.

When it comes to maintaining them, how hard is it? Are batteries easily changed? Can you swap a band yourself or do you need to take it to a store?

What mission? I’m thinking the Moon, Mercury or even Earth

Considering giving up

Life was meant to get better right?

Life was meant to be easier?

But it isn’t, raw dogging reality fucking sucks balls

I want to just crawl back into a bottle and go numb again. Fuck the consequences the doc warned me about over my liver.

To me those warnings are just an invitation that’s becoming more and more tempting

The note doesn’t always need to be pristine for me to find it fascinating

I wonder what they would grade at….

Omega Seamaster — French Advertisement Translation (Literal)

Why has the Omega Seamaster become the waterproof watch of high precision the most sought-after in the world?

**The Seamaster is a robust sport watch, waterproof, shockproof and antimagnetic.** But it is above all an instrument of high precision Omega. The Seamaster was created to give you for your whole life the satisfaction of an operation without failure and of an exactitude which is measured in seconds.

**It has the favour of the world…** The Omega Seamaster suits, just as well, the life of every day (note its classic line) as to a submarine dive (it is waterproof to 60 metres of depth). All those who wear the Omega Seamaster — they are nearly two million — have been won over by this variety of services. It has thus become the sport watch the most sought-after in the world.

**It has proved itself in the fire of combat.** The Seamaster was born during the Second World War, at the demand of the British armed forces. They charged Omega to manufacture a wristwatch associating a great precision with a robustness to all tests.

**An automatic watch** But evidently, the engineers of Omega did not remain there. After having demonstrated that robustness, precision, elegance can go in pair, they wished still to add a quality to the Seamaster: automatism.

**A watch for your whole life** The parts of the Seamaster are machined according to demands which go up to the 2000th of mm. The 30th of the thickness of a hair. For a watch, manufactured with so great a precision, the wear is negligible. That is to say that, if you accord it a minimum of care (oiling and cleaning) your Omega Seasmaster will last your whole life.

**What does the Omega guarantee represent?** It is evident that a watch machined according to so great demands can be guaranteed unconditionally and integrally. All Omegas are so for one year. This guarantee is honoured by each watchmaker-jeweller Omega in the entire world. Whatever the country where it was issued. For you, it is the assurance that, at your home or on a voyage abroad, you will always be able to benefit from the guarantee and the service Omega.

The humidity was low enough, there was not a hint of rain in the forecast, the temperature sitting just right, there was not a single planet misbehaving for once, and it all lined up yesterday for an absolute stunner of a day in Sydney, Australia.

The kind of day that lets my 1960 Seamaster Cal. 552 out to play.

My wife snapped this on our way into town for a conference yesterday morning and only showed me today.

I try to stay detached from "stuff," but the watches are the exception to the rule. The purists would probably call it the "Watch of Theseus" because I sent it straight to Omega for a full overhaul the moment it came into my custodianship.

I will let them keep their "original" oils from the Eisenhower administration; I have a similar vintage Seamaster with a date complication there right now for the same treatment. Not only is it a good quality service by the manufacturer it also confirms authenticity for when I do not have papers for the watch. Omega will not service a fake.

That’s my standard: unless a piece has the kind of heavily documented provenance that earns it a spot behind glass, it’s a tool. I’ve gladly sent heirloom watches to Omega SA, with permission from family (grandfathers watch sent to omega with my father’s and uncle’s permission) to ensure they continue to survive. Any maintenance done after that is the local watchmaker whom I trust.

I won’t let them seize up in a drawer. Or have them overhauled when they come into my possession by anyone else. A vintage Omega is meant to be worn; provided you’ve got the patience to wait for the right weather…

I found this amazing coat on eBay and took a punt.

It’s absolutely beautiful and fits wonderfully! I trust the seller so it should be Australian rabbit fur from somewhere mid 1960’s. I think it could be maybe a commissioned piece due to the quality of the lining and lack of any labels or anything like that.

Pardon the oh so trendy pants and Ugg boots….

G’day Team Navy!

I was a Maritime Warfare Officer in the Royal Australian Navy. When I joined we were called Seaman Officers. Basically I was an OOW in charge of bridge watches. I guess the equivalent would be a Surface Warfare Officer?

I worked mostly in amphib and was starting my way toward A/PWO time, moving from the bridge to the OPs room to specialise in anti-air and gain my PWO qual.

When I completed my Blind Safety Firing Officer course we were shown a video about the USS Vincennes shooting down Iran Air Flight 655. I’m trying to find it.

I can find information online about it but I specifically remember a doco style video we were shown about the incident. It was an older style video format from what I remember and this was a decade and a formerly fully functional liver ago. (Alcoholic in recovery)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a ring that is about 2oz of .925 silver from a club that no longer exists. I want to melt it down: keep the silver, lose the memories.

What’s the easiest way to do this without going balls deep on equipment I’ll probably only use once?

I don’t want to sell it given the nature of the club. I also don’t trust handing it to someone who says they’ll melt it but quietly swaps it for other silver and keeps the original whole for its cool factor.

I’ve seen posts of people casting their own and figured this was the right place to ask, or to get pointed in the right direction.

I’m in Sydney if anyone local can help.
