The first page to my comic! (criticisms welcome)

Is this what giving birth feels like? Cause it feels great

I needed an establishing first page so I don’t think I’ll cook as hard again, at least not right now. That being said, I am 100% open to hearing anything you find wrong with this page (provided you explain why)

I honestly can’t believe I’m actually doing this, chat 😭🔥

Gonna be working on a short comic with these four as central players. Thoughts?

I’m more so looking towards any comments/criticisms towards the designs that won’t alter their silhouettes too crazy (but if you do got criticisms regarding the designs themselves, I’m more than happy to hear them out)

And just so we’re all on the same page, Buck, Ned, and Gilver are the leading characters. The sloth is the big bad evil guy they gotta take down by the end of the comic

Buck has a magical toaster (which he bought from the dollar store) which acts as a near infinite storage for all of his weapons. Only catches that he can’t control what shoots out of it.

Ned and Gilver are kind of a package deal: a really smart, short and physically weak guy and his Smilodon companion

Sloth has the power where the less he moves, the more intense his next action is (if he stands completely motionless, he takes no physical damage)

Character workshop: Sloth (villain)

Aside from having this done a day later than I wanted, I really do like how it ended up

Working on this one I think pushed me at a subconscious level. I wanted the first villain my protagonist meet to be simple but still dangerous.

So I came up with the idea of a superpower where if the person stands completely still, their muscles with tense up so much so that the next movement they make would be abnormally powerful

Simple enough, right? Little to no movement = insanely powerful next move

This may be because I’m also a huge animal nerd, but I thought it would be really fun to give the superpower to A sloth themed villain. Specifically, the now-extinct ground sloth who were roughly 8 to 10 feet tall and weighed at around 360 kg. Plus, I also thought it would be interesting to make someone who is visually based off of a sloth to be unexpectedly dangerous.

Despite having drab earth tones, I found myself getting a little bit more creative with the colors here to make him stand out a little more (I hope anyways, y’all tell me if I succeed or not)

As always, criticisms have and will be welcomed, and I’d love to hear what you guys think about this one!

A few Fury rough sketches

I was just experimenting with poses and drawing fury’s face at different angles. Those two bangs can be rough to work with sometimes.

Plus, I thought this one could be a fun little thought experiment on how she would handle bad guys

Character workshop: Shield

This one was a lot of fun to work on! This here is my “Superman”. More specifically, 80% Superman 20% Captain America (the shields I felt were necessary to make the silhouette just a little bit more interesting while also making him a bit distinct from his inspiration)

The main plan I have for this guy is that he shows up every now and again in the story basically to help guide our scrappy protagonist (will work on him soon enough) in the same way an older brother might give advice

Somewhere along the design process, I chose to give him darker skin because the more I thought about it a lot of superhumans I can think of are Caucasian (Superman, Omni man, Homelander, and Phenomeman. And I guess All-Might, though I don’t remember whether he’s American or Japanese, I didn’t keep up with the anime or manga 💀😭)

I am ultimately happy with where this is at right now, but I can’t help but notice that I have a bit of a buff man bias in the batch of characters I’ve been creating (something I’ll rectify in the next dude, trust).

On a technical level? I’m glad I got to work with muscles and I’ll have myself to be more gestural in the sketching process. Definitely gotta work on working on a bigger scale next time because surprise surprise, the smaller your work is the easier that is to mess up.

That’s just me, though, as always criticisms haven’t always will be welcomed, and I’d love to hear what you guys have to say!

Character workshop: Ned and Gilver

After working on nothing but human designs for a while, having a creature to work on was definitely a breath of fresh air.

I made some last-minute changes to Ned, where even though in universe he’s really really short, in the sketches I’ve made him look almost Chibi-like. Well, it was definitely cute. I felt like it contrasted a little bit with everyone else’s look in a way that’s a little unflattering. Ultimately it all boils down to still keeping that small, almost cute energy, but giving him a little bit more definition.

Gilver was a much needed exercise on snouted creatures. Personally, I find myself struggling drawing creatures with pronounced snouts that isn’t a side profile.

The whole idea behind these two is that I was inspired by Moon girl and devil dinosaur. Initially, Ned was going to be a young boy assisting my main character in taking out bad guys. However I didn’t want to throw an actual child at potential life-threatening crises, so I thought of a workaround of a short generally physically weak man with the mind of a genius.

And you can say the devil dinosaur inspiration is a little on the nose with the literal red coloring, but I don’t think it would’ve had that same level of oomph I was looking for if it was any other color. I guess I could’ve gone for orangish-red, but that’s a problem for future me to look into

All in all, i’m happy with where these two are for now. Of course, as always criticisms have and will be welcomed, and I would love to hear what you guys think about these two!

Ngl chat I think I peaked here

While workshopping some ideas for my next batch of characters i’m working on, this beautiful image came to my mind which I had to get down on paper

For those curious, the Smilodon and the guy on the right is supposed to be a “moon girl and devil dinosaur” situation except that’s a grown man who’s just really really short

(Smilodon’s name is Gilver, after the first ever sabertooth cat OC I’ve ever created, and she is a lovely lady. The other guys just Ned because he looks like a Ned)

Character workshop: 6 heroes down!

It’s been a fun ride so far! And I’m glad I’m allowing myself to make mistakes and learn what works and what doesn’t.

From the 6 initial sketches compared to their most current renditions (for now, at least. Colors and minor details need changing) I’m very happy with the way these all turned out!

From image 13 onwards are some sketch’s for some character ideas I have cooking in the back burner (green guy’s my main guy :>)

I’m far from over and while I can’t say for sure I’ll see this thing to the end, I at the very least want to make a small comic at some point.

Not much else to say at this point. As always criticisms have and always will be welcome and I’d love to hear what you have to say!

Character workshop: Gold Crush

And this marks the sixth character design I’ve worked on so far, and the final design from those six initial sketch ideas I had

I’m really glad I decided to take up this project. Having nothing to do all summer sounds fun until it isn’t.

I don’t really have a lot of notes here other than I wanted a strongman character.

I jokingly thought that this character got his strength because in-universe he’s a dad of three, making his power souped up Dad strength. But then the more I thought about it, the more I thought: “physical strength is cooling all but what’s another way a dad would wanna be strong for his kids?”

Money, and by extension a strong business to pass on sounds pretty powerful. Coupled with the fact that I imagine that he’s a gentle giant with a big heart not only for his kids but for the world that his kids will soon take over, I imagine he’s the kind of guy who gives back as much money as he makes from his business

But what is his business? That’s where his powers come in. I thought it would be really fun to imagine that not only is he a businessman, but he’s also in the field working using his super human strength of turning his body into gold to mine more gold!

All in all, this one helps me brush up on both my anatomy understanding and gestural sketching skills. Like always, though, criticisms have and always will be welcomed, and I’d love to hear what you guys have to say!

Character workshop: a day in their lives

As I’m currently still workshop the sixth hero and onwards, I thought it would be fun to do a small visual experiment on what the hero I’ve already created would probably do in their day-to-day

Going in order:

Fury starts her day chugging down a bottle of apple cider. Classiness be damned, if she has to deal with drug dealers and gangs, she should at least have the means to make it a little bit more bearable… yeah?

Red star, as part of his research and appreciation for the planet that he now calls home, recreates a pose from a show he’s watched. If he’s going to help protect this world, may as well learn from its own heroes (even if fictional)

Magica would hate to get a cramp with her very movement-centric magical powers, so she exercises her joints. One pirouette at a time.

Circe takes it upon herself to fix whatever is broken. Even with the sweat on her face telling her that now is the perfect time for a break, her eyes are fixed on the prize of yet another repaired machine.

A common misconception with Ronin Hood is that they have no friends; this couldn’t be further from the truth. On calm nights one could see Ronin enjoying the company of some small friends in high places.

This was a fun exercise! It forced me to work with poses. I’m not too familiar with and gave me an opportunity to try out different visual ideas with the characters. I actually gave fury a lower half, I changed up magica’s colors (might go for yellow or orange is yellow next time tbh) and I changed Ronin’s Hood from brown to blue

Generally speaking, I think I did pretty all right, but as always criticisms have and will be welcomed. I’d love to hear what you guys think!

Character workshop: Ronin Hood

This one was fun to work on, though I’d be lying if I said I didn’t panic just a little bit with the colors. I think it turned out great in the end!

The whole idea was to make a moon Knight/Batman type character. I wanted to play with the idea that this character can literally hide within the shadows (all thanks to their hood) I think the real challenge was trying to get the hood itself to look nice, or at the very least drawn and away that I both thought was simple but also interesting

Along the process, I wanted to vaguely invoke the essence of a cockroach. Think about it, small, unnoticeable, hides in the darkness. But when found, invokes the feeling of fear.

I tried expressing that a little bit with the color and the arm spikes, as well as the two tufts of the hood, which were initially designed to resemble the antenna

I also would be lying if I said the name itself, “Ronin Hood” was such a stupid but also brilliant name for this hero. My rationale being that this hero, not only operates predominantly in stealth, but steals from the rich to give back to the poor.

All in all, I think this design is pretty OK! As always, though, criticisms have and always will be welcomed and I’d love to hear what you guys think!

Character workshop: Circe Circuit

This one was… unnecessarily stressful. While it could 100% be on my end for different reasons, I think the biggest stressor was trying to find the right balance of making an electrician electrical hero, and trying to balance out both parts.

I do like how her outfit doesn’t follow the typical superhero skin, tight spandex, but I do think that both the shoulder and knee pads feel just a little lazy (that’s just me though, you be the judge on that)

I decided it’d be pretty fun to make her electric powers vaguely resemble those old plasma balls that were really popular back in the late 90s early 2000s

I was uncertain about the colors at first, but I think I’m pretty OK with it!

It is a bit of a shame how the crazy almost starry night looking hair from the initial sketch (last image) was lost, but I know for a fact that if I had to draw that over and over and over again that I’d go insane. So it was a necessary sacrifice, unfortunately 🫩

Unless I can somehow reincorporate into a different character or a different iteration of her design, I’m gonna keep a mental pin of that for later

As always, criticisms have and always will be welcomed, so I’d love to hear what you guys have to say about this one!

Was feeling nostalgic, so I looked at some of my older sketchbook!

Please excuse the varying technical quality in some of these, they were from different times lmao. I wanted to take this as a chance to show off some creature designs. I’ve either forgotten about or haven’t posted here yet

Character workshop: Magica

This one took a little longer than the other two sketches I made, but I think it paid off big-time!

I think the biggest challenge was making sure I balanced out the witch elements with the superhero fit

So I decided to take the old traditional route of the witches hat as inspired by my favorite witch in her debut game: Bayonetta!

The beehive hairstyle was a style. I wasn’t expecting to use, but I’m really glad I did. I was going back-and-forth between whether or not I should add the really feather wrist ruffles but I think in the end, adding them gave the final design a lot more visual identity and a much more interesting silhouette.

Of course this design isn’t just fashion, It’s also functional! Magic has powers is that she can secret a powdery substance from her hands that sparkle. The substance when drawn on any surface in specific patterns can unleash various spells

She doesn’t know the full extent of her own powers so she’s keeping a particularly keen eye on that, that being said the spells she already knows that wrist ruffles at a little bit more dazzle, and chaos, simply by picking up and scattering what powder is left behind by her hands

The gradient pattern on the ribbon in her hair was a last-minute decision, but I’m really glad I did it. I feel like it brought a lot of focus to the head without it being demanding.

All in all, I’m really happy with this design! But as always criticisms have and always will be welcomed so I’d love to hear what you guys think!

Character workshop: Red Star

This one was fun to work on! Basically my take on Martian Manhunter, except he has the powers of cyclops from X-Men

I really really liked the foundation (last image) so little was really changed, but I really didn’t like the trope of humanoid aliens (really does not sit right with me as a creature designer) so I decided to make this guy an alien from Neptune operating a humanoid robot

Ask her why he can shoot lasers? I like to think that his race on Neptune achieved space travel, and so was tasked with charting further galaxies. And in typical comic book fashion, a mishap has occurred, which left our guy in a rather dangerous situation where he was in direct contact with radiation from a red star

They gave him the power to emit that same radiation, but makes him dangerous to any living thing around him. After floating around space for a while, the Superman equivalent of my narrative discovers this alien and help helps get his radiation problem in check.

The suit can channel the excess radiation into a powerful blast, which acts both as a way to attack enemies, and as a way to make his radiation, not affect the people around him

As always, criticisms have and always will be welcomed and I would love to hear what you guys think!
