Hello, I was wondering if there are some good up-to-date books that just go into generally interesting stuff having to do with huge and tiny phenomena?

I’d look myself but, since I am ignorant, idk what is good or bad

Idk anything about physics but I find the huge stuff like stars and space cool as well as the tiny stuff like atoms and photons really cool.

I would like to read about them but don’t wanna read outdated stuff.

Are there layman’s books on these topics that are educational or beginner?

Good long form ambient for reading?

Looking for some long ambient tunes. Trying to read books on philosophy but find the silence makes me prone to distraction.

Many ambient reading playlists I find are filled with multiple 3-4min tracks but they are so short and the constant changing is distracting

Know any ambient music that embodies dreadful heat of humid summers or dry deserts?

A lot of the ambient I listen to either doesn’t evoke temperature or is nice and cool, wet or frozen, or if there is heat, is a pleasant warmth of rays against your skin during mild weather.

I don’t really have anything to produce the image of that dreadful thick humid summer air of June where I live. Nor do I have anything that brings images of the dry dusty ovens of deserts and cracked dirt

Anyone have any ambeint music like this for them?

Are the Black Books worth buying?

Basically title. I understand that Jung wrote these as journals and it’s similar to the Red Book but I honestly don’t know much about them. If I got them, I wanna get them physically because I get all my books physical.

How much are they worth? Looks like I might have to get them used

Are there any spaces or groups for atheists to practice spirituality?

This may not be the right place to post this but it is genuinely impossible to find any space for this and so this is one of the closest ones I can think of that may accept a post like this.

I have been watching a YouTuber named Brittney Hartley on her channel No Nonsense Spirituality. Basically she does critiques of religion but not hatefully and she also seeks to bring spirituality into atheism.

She doesn’t think that religion or belief systems incorporating the supernatural are necessary to develop spiritually and uses a broader understanding of the term “spirituality.” She doesn’t want religion to have a monopoly on the many of the “psychological technologies” that humans use to develop themselves and relate to the world. She sees purpose in symbolic acts and ritual and generally thinks many things that New Atheists classify as “woo-woo” can be used for good and by non-believers.

She brings awareness to the problem of atheism in not providing the many things that religion provides its believers. After all, it’s not a full worldview and only denotes a negation at its core. So when people leave their religions they no longer have access to stuff like community, ritual, purposeful narrative, symbols, some aspects of culture, existential satisfaction, etc. and fall into a pessimistic Nihilism. All of the tools religion once provided is now tainted and poisoned.

A lot of what she says strikes a cord within me. I am an atheist/agnostic. I was never super religious. It did damage to me in my upbringing but I never felt the good side of it. I do know what is meant by that hollowed out Nihilism she goes into though. I am done being angry at religion. Or, at the very least, I am done ONLY being angry at religion. I want to move on and build and have those things monopolized by religion. But the problem is exactly as she describes…there is no atheistic alternative.

At least none with actual weight to it that I can find near me. I can’t revert back. Even if I went to church and understood it all symbolically I would feel rather alienated and apart from the rest. Everyone would believe in supernatural stuff but I wouldn’t and would constantly have to keep translating everything. Not interested in that. Are there any atheistic solutions to this? Do you guys know of any?

Maybe there are a number of spaces that each, separately, seek to attempt to address any one of these human needs. But it’s too fragmented. I want something that has it all. Tired of atomization.

She did a response to [Matt Dilahunty](https://youtu.be/LHBmH38ZGZ4?si=z5tyC-vUjMGvz8uz) after he made a video calling spirituality nonsense.
It really moves my desire.

I don’t understand how someone can look at a concept of a cruel God and say “if that is real then I would never worship them”

I see this a lot in online spaces. I can’t help but think this is nothing but pride talking.

If a cruel omnipotent God exists the most logical thing to do is to worship it and bend a knee to it. What is the alternative? Literally being tortured for eternity.

The ethical thing to do here is not only to worship it for your own self-care but also try to get others to worship it.

Do you really want to see a loved one get tortured forever in the most excruciating pain just out of spite with no way out? Just because?

It’s different from a corrupt human organization where there is a chance, however slight, to change it or fight back. But this is an omnipotent God we are talking about. There is no real rebellion. No chance at fixing things.

It’s either submit or be tortured forever. It’s either your loved ones submit or they get tortured forever. Do you think pride is worth your loved ones getting tortured forever? I think that it is absolutely not worth it in the slightest. There’s no redemption and no hope. Just endless suffering.

What are some recommendations for the Philosophy of Religion for religions outside of traditional theism?

Namely, the more “eastern” approaches.

Rather than simply suggesting scriptures (which you can do, I don’t mind and maybe it is necessary) it would be cool to have a book on the philosophy of religions in that hemisphere.

Which religions? After all, there are SO MANY!

To which I will reply ANY religion. Whatever ones are most accessible or easiest to study would probably be best as a starting point for me. But any will do!

I am less interested in praxis and moreso interested in ideas and concepts. Debates and disagreements. That sort of thing.

40-50inch 4K TV for gaming and anime in bedroom

I want a smaller size because it’s for my room. I already have a big ol’ fancy TV in my living room. But I just want a TV for my room for days I want privacy and alone time (I have a roommate)

That being said, my budget is rather limited, so OLED is out of the question.

I just want something that isn’t gonna bug out or break down quickly while looking decent. I am not a connoisseur and certainly can’t match the passion of a great many of the comments here. Tbh idek what makes a great TV.

Would prefer it on the smaller end of my range but can understand if that’s difficult.

Notice: The structure of my title is IF -> THEN. So, if you don’t accept the IF then don’t respond to the THEN.

Some theists tell me that they truly were able to choose to believe in God. I have met no atheists which say they chose to no longer believe in God. It’s usually framed that they were convinced and that their beliefs have no choice but to align with what they have been convinced by. They cannot **will** themselves to believe or disbelieve. Belief is involuntary for them. Not something they choose.

They may choose to engage opposition or read something the disagree with. They may choose to sing songs of worship of a deity they don’t follow. They may even choose to go to a church or temple and participate in rituals or prayers. But they do not choose to believe.

So I always wondered what the difference is between those who can choose what they believe and those who can’t.

I wonder what the purpose is of those who can’t choose to believe though. They are on a fast track to hell.

I am wondering what is the response to this:

I am told that God does not reveal himself to non-believers because this would infringe upon the free will of the non-believer to believe in God freely and to follow God freely.

The idea is that, by revealing himself, God would enter into a coercive relationship with the non-believer. How could the non-believer reject such a powerful being if they are made to know, without room for doubt, of his existence? They would come to him perhaps out of fear and self preservation rather than love and acceptance.

But there are numerous instances throughout the Bible of God interacting with humans. How does this not violate the principle expounded on above? One may say that these people already knew of God’s presence but surely a believer can fall out of faith so long as they have the freedom to do so. It is something that happens.

It seems strange that only some people get their faith affirmed by God’s actual presence in these stories. The “it would violate freedom” defense does not seem adequate.

Am I missing something or does this specific defense actually fail?

Interfaith dialogues are starting to interest me more than religious vs non-religious ones. I don’t have my own specific religion so intrafaith is less appealing since that is usually more niche and specific (at least in my limited experience it is).

I think it’d be really interesting to see any western faith adherent in dialogue with any eastern faith adherent.

But despite my stated preferences feel free to post whatever you like in accordance with the title.
