Carl, Quasar, and Astrid from Dungeon Crawler Carl and my little story about how at 54 I started a hobby.

Carl is what brought me to this hobby. I am a nerdy girl and love representations of the things I enjoy. I saw a print of Carl and really wanted it. But, it was almost $200. I've no experience painting, but I figured the worse that could happen is that I'd have tried something new and spent $40.

And, two months later I'm an obsessed woman. And I'm really enjoying myself. I figured that I'd start sharing with the DCC figures first.

Perseus and Medusa by Nerikson 1/10 scale New painter. Feedback welcome.

After seeing u/Odd_Soil_8998 'amazing Tinker Fairy I thought I'd share my Perseus and Medusa.

Given that I've only been painting for two months, I am pleased with how it turned out. Certainly room for improvement.

Here were my thoughts and concerns along the way-1 *Why on Earth would you get a model with so much skin when you've only been painting for two months?* 2 *Exactly how many times are you going to repaint the skin?* 3 *Watch another video.* 4*airbrushing would make it appear nicer.*

I repeated 1 pretty much daily. The skin tones aren't as awful as I thought. I still need to learn a lot about highlights. I wanted the snakes brown and green, but I realize it doesn't look great. I like how the base turned out. Any suggestions appreciated.

Bonnie! Battle Ready.

I was so excited to paint this vison of Bonnie. She was conceptualized and created by u/silver_Bond_Artistry and brought to 3D life by Matthew Thompson. Went with a faded/dirty Scream Warriors jersey because a Cowboys jersey wasn't going to happen.

The displays on this sub are amazing and a little intimidating. But I am enjoying myself as I am starting this hobby. She's my first "real" model and was fun to paint. I'm learning a lot.

During my first month of painting, I've been working on blending, contrasts, highlights and skintones. This is the smallest model I've painted. At 100mm it's likely the smallest I'll paint. I overpoured the glue on the base. I have a pic of the glue I used. Is there a better glue- maybe with a brush or dispenser? Also, do you have suggestions for sword painting - colorwise? I used what I had. But, I'd like it more Swordlike in color.

A little background - I've been painting about a month. I've been working on blending, highlighting, contrasts and skin tones. I wanted to this model in various shades of black. And, for where I am in this hobby, I'm mostly pleased. This model is my first trial on more expensive models. She's 100mm, and about as small as I'll likely paint.

The glue I used is Kraftprotz gel-in the 3rd pic. I overpoured it, and now have extra glue on the base. Any suggestions for removing the excess? Any suggestions for other glue bottles?

I'd like the sword to have a more sword-like color. But currently my options are limited. Any suggestions for future swords?

I have the privilege of a unique perspective. After teaching for ten years, I was "promoted" to an instructional coach. I was in a position where I could not only see where admin and teachers were both coming from - oftentimes I was also the bridge between. I could see how admin expected the moon and the stars, and how my colleagues were stuck in antiquated ideology.

I was an instructional coach for 14 years. I returned to the classroom as a basic skills teacher for ELA. Not push in. Not pull out. It is an intervention model classroom. I teach grade level standards and I address areas of struggle through small groups.

So much had changed. When I left the classroom, there were no Chromebooks. Now, every student in the district has one. Change in the student dynamic and the parent dynamic did not occur gradually and over time for me. I reentered an environment where kids no longer have the patience for a good novel. When I left, I had students hanging onto every word of a story. They were hungry to find out what would happen next. They hated ending on a cliffhanger. And, so much more.

Now, they don't cry at the end of Where The Red Fern Grows, they don't connect with The Watsons Go to Birmingha. They don't care about the fate of the characters in Holes. Maze of Bones? Boring. Amulet? Nope. Studying the Titanic - they don't get why people care. They no longer care about so many things that were relevant in my classroom 15 years ago. And, who can blame them?

So much has changed about how our students receive information - how they learn. But, we continue to try to teach them I ways that are no longer optimally effective. And, trying to get the top care about iReady is exhausting. To try to help them engage with the classics is exhausting. They are a part of a world where information is shared instantaneously. They can find all is the answers at the tips of their fingers. Youtube. Tiktok, Instagram, and Discord are all a few clicks away. There

I try each day to incorporate their interests. But, it's disheartening and exhausting to see how in such a short time our students needs have changed so much. And, it's not about the age of the titles of our books. We have an extensive library that includes more modern tales. The only one that seems to garner some interest is Wonder.

The way I see it- we are failing our students. We continue to teach them in a style that no longer matches their intake of information. I'm at the end of my career. I do what I can in my little part of the world. And, I hope that we recognize that something needs to change. But, it's exhausting.

I realize that she is not exactly mini, but posts here and suggested YT videos have been helpful in my learning journey. I did not print this myself.

So, issues first: it is an FDM print and needed a lot of filler primer. A LOT. At a suggestion I used Rustoleum Automotive Filler. So many coats. Admittedly, I got impatient and started spraying heavier. I knew it a wrong and I missed drip marks when sanding. And I still missed a lot of areas. Lesson learned. And I think a different primer. And, did you notice the hand has only four fingers? Lol

Next, it took so so so much paint. Thin layers, not thin layers, it just absorbed paint. I'm guessing due to the type of filler.

So, rather then feeling defeated, I decided to use this as an opportunity to practice blending on the wings. I tried a different approach with each wing area. Then experimented with skin tones a bit. Finally called it. While no where near perfect, I learned a lot. And that's a win.
