is the AMS club directory broken? is there a list of student clubs i can find?

potential incoming ubc transfer student here.
i wanna see what clubs there are at ubc before i accept my offer at ubc.

however, the website seems to be broken?

i manage to get to the AMS Club Directory, which states that there are (450) clubs found. However, when I try to click on the next page, it states that the page is not found.

anyone else facing the same issue? i’m currently overseas if it matters, so maybe it’s an IP issue but i can access the other pages of UBC without problem.

how difficult is it to get into Coop in Sauder as a transfer student?

Potential International Transfer student here! I got a Y2 offer for UBC Sauder and I’m thinking if I should accept it.

How difficult is it to get into Sauder Coop?

Is it a lot more difficult for transfer students?

I know that we’ll be competing with the Fast Track Coop students to get into Sauder - Are there a lot of Fast Track Coop students, leaving very little space for the rest of us?

has anyone done a life/physical science major after being admitted to the Arts admission Category?

For context, I’m a transfer student from an unrelated programme and I was admitted into the Honours Bachelor of Arts at UTSG as an Upper Year (TAJ)

I intend to do a Life or Physical Sciences Specialist at UofT however.

From what i gather online the Admission Category doesn’t really matter other than course priority enrolment.

However, I haven’t really heard any experience from someone who ACTUALLY did a science specialist from an arts admission category.

I have 0 interest in art or social science courses and don’t intend to take them even as electives. I plan to take 5 science courses each term.

How bad is it really? Will all my classes end up being 830AM and will the course conflicts be so bad that I’ll need to take an extra term to complete my degree?

And is there any way I can change my admission category when I’m in UofT? 😭

I guess I do get priority enrolment into courses as a Second Year though??? So will that cancel out the difficulty of snagging up first year science courses?

Also, I’m an international student (transferring from another Ontario school).

So I’m tryna see if it’s even worth it to transfer to UTSG as an international when I wasn’t given the admission category I wanted.
(I have personal reasons why I’d rather study in Toronto compared to my home country)

Thank you so much!

uoft enviromental/ life science grads, what are u doing now? do you really need a PHD to do well for yourself?

and how difficult is it to get corporate sustainability roles with this major?

i got an offer to transfer to uoft artsci, and i’m hoping to major in either:

  1. environment and toxicology spec
  2. environment and health spec (if i can’t get into envi and toxicology)
  3. (maybe) envi geoscience (for water hydrology, i don’t want to do FIFO mining roles)

but i worry about employment outcomes after the degree.

can anyone who has gone through the programme mind sharing ur job/internship hunting experiences?

and can transfer students get ASIP?

besides directly relevant roles, i’m also open to roles like insurance underwriting or corporate roles.

i just wanna find a job after i graduate that isn’t in Sales, F&B, Retail or OF. 😭😭

i’m hoping to find a job that has career progression without having to get a PHD that’d be awesome too.

Thank you!!!

is UBC Commerce (Sauder) a good choice for a singaporean?

I intend to major in Accounting, Finance or Real Estate.

I’m tryna decide if I want to study in Canada, specifically UBC Sauder.

It’s a pretty prestigious programme in Canada, but I worry about employability in Singapore. Like will a Commerce from UBC be viewed as a ‘private degree’ and so will I be at a significant disadvantage when looking for jobs/ internships?

I’m grateful that finances isn’t a concern for me. However, I have no relatives or family working in corporate so I can’t really bank on family connections to find internships or jobs.

I’m open to working in Canada but ofc the economy is bad so I may not find anything there.

I’m Singaporean, but am thinking of studying ENVE in Australia/Canada as an international student. (I don’t qualify for accredited Engineering programmes in my home country & I wanna move out of Singapore eventually). Alternative is to do a 3 year Science/Built Envi programme in my country then do a Masters in Engineering overseas after (but I may not even qualify for the Masters?)

I hope to find work/internships after graduation in the country I study in, but I of course have a backup plan to work in Singapore if that does not work out.

I have about a month to make my decision.

Is there anything I can do this month to explore my interest in Engineering? EG online courses on ENVE etc. Is there anything I should know about this industry?

What is the day-to-day job of an engineer like? How do I decide between CIVE and ENVE? How design heavy is this industry (I suck at design and my visual spatial skills are not the best)?

Interest wise, I like ENVE (working in air/water quality control or waste management sounds like a dream to me) but I’m afraid ENVE is too niche and I won’t be able to find a job.

Also, I really want to live in a big city, so if ENVE would bring me to small towns or FIFO jobs I’m less inclined to pursue it.

How is the job market for entry level grads and interns?

How are the profs at UNSW? Are there office hours? Do you feel sufficiently supported in your academic journey?

What is the WIL experience like? What are some ways students can get this professional practice? Will the school provide help in getting this practice (eg an internship portal open to students)

I’m also an international student, are there any placement or professional practices open to me in this field?

What kind of opportunities are there to build professional experience in this field?

I know that for most fields it's virtually impossible for an international student to get placements or work in Aus, but since Engineering is on the list of skilled professions Aus needs, is there greater hope of getting something?

Thank you so much!

Is it wise to choose USYD over UNSW as I want to have a full 12 weeks break to be able to do internships (I’m an international student so that flexibility will allow me to go home for internships).

What is the Professional Engagement Program (PEP) like?

Singaporeans who are studying in Australian Universities, are you able to get internships in the breaks?

I realise Aus uni breaks are in December to Feb (and last around 12 weeks overlapping with Christmas).

Is it even possible to find internships during this period? I want to study in Aus but I don’t want to graduate with no experience…

(if it matters, i plan to study either environmental or chemical engineering)

I am most interested in the Environmental Engineering specialisation, and I can do that in either programme.

Can anyone who has done either programme comment on your experience on it?

My worry about Civil Engineering is the level of design and 3D Visual Spatial skills required for it.

Jobs wise I am hoping to get into waste management or environmental remediation. I would also think I would be happy to work in the renewable energy sector, but I’m not too sure yet.

Also, how does the compulsory professional practice work? I understand I need to complete 430 hours of professional practice. What are some ways students can get this professional practice? Will the school provide help in getting this practice?

I’m interested in the Green Building Design Specialisation!

Is this programme (and/or) specialisation very design heavy, or is it more technical & crunching numbers? (I suck at design and my visual spatial skills aren’t the best)

How’s the IWSP like? Do you look for it in the 2nd or 3rd year?

How difficult is it to get one?

And what are the opportunities after graduation, be it in singapore or overseas?

Thank you so much!

SIT SBE is not an accredited engineering degree which is the main thing that is stopping me from going there.

My goal is to migrate to Australia/Canada/US in the next 20 years so I plan to do an Engineering Masters in one of these countries after, and I’m not sure if SIT SBE would set me up for that.

I do NOT want to do my Masters in SIT as well to get the accreditation.

However, it’s unlikely I’ll get a job right after grad overseas, so I’ll need to position myself well for a job in SG in the built envi indistry.

And SIT SBE kinda wins for that(?) with the IWSP

Pros of SIT SBE is my interest in the specialisation (Green Building Design) & the IWSP so at least I can get an entry level job.

For Aus Universities, I am looking at studying Environmental Engineering. I hope to work in Waste Management or Air/Water Quality Control or in PUB or something.

Aim would be to come back to SG to work for a few years, get some experience, then go back again for a Masters after.

Aus Universities are accredited so there’s that going for them!

But I’d assume companies will still hire accredited Local Uni grads over me so idk? 😭

Cons of Aus Unis are:

- duration (longer by 1 year)

- no iwsp or internship

- breaks are only 11/12 weeks in december to feb —> is that even enough time to get internships in SG?

TYSM!
