Is this kind of damage salvagable? And if fixed risky for my VCR to play?

I bought a pretty rare tape at a garage sale and was thrilled just to see it. Upon inspection the owner said I could have it since it was broken. The position it's broken in looks like i can swing it back into place and gorilla glue it right back together. Would that type of repair hold up to use in a VCR? I wouldn't want to risk my player. Is this something you've seen before?

Should i keep these mics i thrifted?

I found these in a bundle at a thrift store for a few bucks. I'll have to test to see if they work.

From top to bottom they look like:

Venturer microphone (looks cheap)

RadioShack unidirectional dynamic mic

Nextech

Realistic Omnidirectional

Shure Super 55 Supercardioid Dynamic (really heavy)

(2) 79F158-4 IMP10K

(2) Numark DM-855A 300

A friend gave me a Tascam DP-008 to record myself acoustic or electric guitar and I have a Zoom H6 with the attachable capsules. Are these mics worth keeping and pairing with either of those?

Gain levels and preamp hiss - can I remove it later or should i start over?

I bought a used Zoom H6 for a great price to practice and learn how to record ambient soundscapes. I went out to a bog today to record three separate one hour sessions. I could hardly hear anything in my headphones so I started with the preamp at 8, then 7, then 6.5. Tomorrow I'm going to go back out to the same spot and try 6, 5.5 and 5.

Playing the tracks back on the Zoom each time gave me an almost constant white noise or background noise. I admit it could have been the amalgamation of everything out there. I set the device low to the water and blocked by the wind with a dead cat. There were birds singing, frogs croaking, bugs everywhere. Bubbles were coming out of the water and ripples were seen. Grasses, branches and flowers were swaying with the light breeze. I like the sound. It is pleasant and I'm happy with it. But i am left wondering if my preamps introduced the sound.

In each of the three recordings, the levels never got to -30 db. I used the XY capsules that came with it, recording at the highest quality setting in stereo. I've been reading about normalizing the sound and bringing it up in software, but if my recordings have preamp hiss are they lost or tainted? Will trying to remove that sound create artifacts in the recording? Unfortunately I didn't bring my laptop on the trip to test.

Just gifted a ton of buildings- help me get started with model railroading - I'm a bit overwhelmed

A family friend passed away and their estate said I could have boxes of model railroading supplies. They believed all of the actual trains were worth a lot of money so they want to keep those to sell. They said these are worthless.

I've been wanting to try this hobby since I was a little kid, but have never had the time or space. Now with three children and a full-time job i still don't, but I'm much more interested in the scenery and layout building than actually running the trains. I actually wonder what I would do if I finished a layout because that seems like the most fun.

Anyways, can anyone help me figure out what I have or can do with these as for a theme or time period? I put some smaller buildings toward the front because they just don't seem like HO scale, rolling stock looks bigger than the building, maybe N scale?

They also gave me rolls of felt, corkboard, insulation sheets, trees, glue, tape, etc. I'm thinking about making modular 1x2 or 2x2 sections that can be easily stored but also easily assembled and then taken apart when not in use. Does that work?

Do people collect copies of old Adult tapes?

A family friend passed away and the family was surprised to find a few boxes (probably 20-30) adult tapes in his collection amongst other more conventional tapes. They gave me the whole lot because they know I love watching and collecting VHS tapes, but adult stuff I would be selling.

Normally, I would think these would be an easy sell, but they're homemade in the sense that the guy rented tapes from his local store and made duplicates. He even took the time to print out titles with timestamps to print on the case. I see the typical titles like Debby Does Dallas but then a whole bunch of ones I'm not even sure have a digital version anywhere. It looks like there's even a section of 90s softcore tapes.

Is there a place like eBay to list these? Do they even have demand as copies?

Any recommendations for coal mining specific starter sets?

I'm not sure if I should be looking at a starter set or acquire my train cars one-by-one but I'd like to recreate a lot of where I grew up in the coal mining counties of southern Ohio. I'm brand new to the hobby and thought N scale would be perfect for my limited space. I was hoping to create a tunnel that goes through a small company town before heading to the mountain to load the coal. I plan on doing all of the terrain myself, and maybe even some of the buildings. I grew up in this area in the 1980s so I have a love of that time period, but I could go all the way back to the start of our community around 1880. Regardless, I'd like to pick a time period and be true to it. But it's all depending on what's available. Any recommendations?

Friend wants to give me model railroading supplies- what games match HO scale terrain and buildings?

It's far too much to keep all of it. It's Rubbermaid containers filledand I don't have that much room. It's mostly HO scale. He's offering trees and moss with felt and cork mats which I think is going to be super useful. But there are lots of unassembled buildings, circa 1950s with small commecial and, industrial buildings making up the majority.

I've been thinking about getting into miniatures wargames mostly for the terrain building side. Any ideas on games that work well with HO scale buildings? I'd love the excuse to play if I now have all of these cool scenes I can set up.

Help me figure out which Constantine or Constans I'm holding here

The edges of the coin are pretty rough and I'm sure some of the inscription is just lost to time, but this is one of the few Roman imperial coins I have that has a lot of portrait detail and is not harshly cleaned.

Just got a bunch of store credit with my LGS - what should I add to my library of 7th ed books?

I found a few old MTG cards that I don't play with anymore and was able to buy buylist them for $400 in store credit.

Right now, I have the Keeper's Handbook, The Investigators Handbook, Cults of Cthulhu, Pulp Cthulhu, The Keeper's Screen, and Doors to Darkness.

I'm thinking about time period specific books. Gaslight, Regency, Down Darker Trails, Dark Ages, Berlin, and Harlem Unbound are all in stock. I think i could just get them all. I love this game so much I'm strongly considering trying to get a full library.

Which books have you been enjoying lately? Anything that you keep coming back to or surprised you as not that interesting?

Help me identify what I believe is Dioceltian

Is the reverse type a figure holding victory? I'm not sure if can make out the inscription.

Eastern Ontario riverbed - First time going out - what did I find?

The second photo easily has a few shell fossils in it right? The first one is perplexing. Both look much better wet like in the photos. No cleaning was done.

I'm stumped on this Roman Emperor but hoping the reverse details helps ID.

The reverse appears to be a figure holding two items, one raised higher than the other, maybe victory? The inscription is much clearer to my eyes but I'm not able to make out what's there. Any ideas?

This is another one that has a patina that looks like it was silvered or at least maybe 10% billon.

Am I looking at museum gift shop replicas or real ancient silver coins?

There's also a Casear and a Brutus Casear that I'm extremely suspicious of due to their rarity and how clean their fields are. I cannot identify a cast mark on the edge of these but they all seem off. I've never owned ancient silver coins (I've only collected copper) so I'm not sure how they are supposed to look and feel.

That said the portraits all seem a little too good. The fields are all a little too clean with convenient black patina to highlight the portraits. They also seem a little too centered conveniently with all of the necessary inscription for id.

These are obviously not authentic right? Any idea where this style or design comes from? I'm helping an elderly collector who said he got these at a bourse floor in Toronto about 30 years ago.

I believe I'm looking at a Postumus but having trouble identifying the reverse

The reverse looks like a figure holding a bow on their right side with what looks like arrows toward the ground on their left side. The inscription looks like SAL on the left but I cannot make out anymore. AVG on the right. Any ideas?

Is my Postumus attribution accurate?

And maybe I'm wrong but it looks like a silvered or billon type.

Have you ghosted old friends and contacts or do you try to defend your new life?

It's been years now since my family and I left a strict Evangelical church. We live in a small town but rarely run into those people. The few we have kept in touch with is healthy and irregular. I respect their choice to not prod or invite us back.

However, out of the woodwork some of the prominent individuals in that church have been texting me talking about how long it's been and how they miss us. I'm not interested in meeting any of these people. We casually got together a few times a year when we were there, but my memories are all of gossip and church politics.

Right now I'm just ghosting them. Doesn't that seem like the right call? Sometimes I just want to engage them, argue about church and Bible bullshit, etc. Isn't that just inviting trauma new battles? That said, maybe i need to show some courage and stand up to these people.

What's been your experience?

My latest challenge is helping find out if these all belong to Constans - are we close?

I've already posted about Valens IDs and those are going to be a challenge. I'm helping an elderly neighbor who is sorting his coin collection and cannot read his chicken scratch notes from purchases he made 20+ years ago.

Here's his collection of what he believes are (8) coins from Valens. I tried to get some better photos without glare. Are we on the right track? I'm definitely thinking late Roman bronze and some of the reverses look nicer than the obverse, but again I'm having a hard time making out the name VALENS on them and wondering if you see something different or out of place.

I've had another look at his collection and unfortunately most of them are heavily cleaned with luster and no legibility.

Are these Cesear and Brutus even well done forgeries or pretty obvious?

A friend gave me a few dozen authentic late Roman bronze coins and these would be the only silver (or attempting to be silver) coins. Besides being extremely valuable I'm also suspicious of the beading not matching known examples, too much of the inscription being present and the muscle and facial hair being far too blocky. Anything else? Are these historic forgeries or modern pieces?

u/Then_Marionberry_259 — 28 days ago

I'm told these are Valens but I cannot make that out in the inscription- help please

On two of the reverses I see captives taken and a third it looks like the Roman goddess Victory. I believe these are common late Roman bronze reverses correct?

Please help me understand the obverse inscription.

Help a 1st timer with an Atlantic Ocean trip this summer - where do I start with research?

I'm going to be visiting family who lives on a small private island off the Atlantic Ocean. The island has gorgeous beaches that are down from the exposed cliff side. Besides the beaches there are two lighthouses with lots of excavated rock as breakfasts.

My family is not aware of anyone fossil hunting there and said it's seasonally great for sea glass.

There's little internet or minimal phone service so we're just going to be visiting and exploring for about ten days. I want to try to find some marine fossils but never have before besides just looking at the rocks under my feet.

Should I be looking at guide books for the Atlantic States? I can bring a shovel, chiseled, hammer, etc. but I would just blindly destroying rock.

Advice on a paint set for a new player?

I have a basic set from The Army Painter that I was using for 40K called their Fanatic line and I really love how it goes on, but it's a lot of fantasy colors. I was thinking about maybe getting the Army Painter set for Bolt Action and that the neutral tones would work well for boats. Or am I overthrowing this scale and I just need to get better with my basic paint mixing?
