Top Tier is still at it and maybe escalating their scam

Over the last couple months I've received several text messages from "Top Tier Solar" claiming to be working on behalf of the manufacturers and installers of my gear wanting to set up a time for their people to inspect my setup to ensure that it's working properly. Not true.

Yesterday, my installer sent an email to their customers warning them that the latest escalation of this scam is for Top Tier to claim that the installer had gone out of business and that they were offering to step in to take over maintenance and support. Again, not true. They're very much still in business. In the email they didn't call out "Top Tier" explicitly but they indicated they were an NC-based outfit. It was easy enough to connect the dots seeing how they've contacted me several times already.

Avoid Top Tier...

KeePass-browser on Linux has trouble with Reddit credentials

  • KeePassXC - 2.7.12
  • KeePassXC-Browser - 1.10.3
  • Operating system: Linux x86_64
  • Browser: Mozilla Firefox 140.0

Lately, KeepassXC browser extension has been unable to successfully enter Reddit credentials. It only seems to recognize the userid field these days (only one green icon to click on). Attempts to help Keepass by selecting the password field and then using the context menu to fill in "password only" does nothing.

Keepass can still log into old reddit.

Now that most Linux desktop environments are Wayland-based, autotype isn't an option unless you enable a hack that's a security risk.

Anybody else seen this behavior?

Outdoor 4 camera: motion alerts but no video recordings?

I've had two Blink doorbells for a couple years. I have a Sync 2 module so no need for a cloud subscription. The setup works about as well as you'd expect for battery cameras. Earlier this week I added an Outdoor 4 camera. After adopting the camera and setting the motion zones, I tested by walking in the zone. Motion event was triggered and a video clip was saved to the Sync 2 so I assumed everything was working.

Later the first day I got another motion event on my phone from the new camera. Except this time there never was a video clip. Same thing yesterday. Motion notification, no video clip. So I walked in front of the camera. This time, I got both a notification and a video.

My settings are to record a 10s clip even if motion stops.

What's going on here? I've never seen this behavior with the doorbells. Even if it was a bird or the wind, the new camera should have recorded a 10-second clip.

Laptop CPU frequency doesn't seem to be changing with load?

Hi. I have an oldish Lenovo Thinkpad with a Xeon E3-1505M v5 processor (4c, 8t) running OpenSuse 16. In principle this CPU should be able to vary its freq between 800mhz and 3.7ghz. However, my watch script, which monitors /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuN/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq) never seems to show anything other than the minimum-configured frequency.

tlp-stat -p -v indicates that all CPU cores are using the intel_pstate scaling driver and that the scaling_governor is set to performance. For what it's worth, the laptop is plugged into AC power for these tests.

I can change the minimum frequency via sysfs (/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/policyN/scaling_min_freq) or via the cpupower utility but I never see the current CPU freq deviate from that value no matter what's running in the background. And since lm_sensors doesn't show any significant change in temperatures even when I set the minimum freq to 3ghz, I'm not convinced the setting the minimum value is having any impact on the actual CPU frequency.

Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

From Paypal's website, how do I view an invoice that was sent to me but I haven't paid yet?

I have the invoice email and I'm expecting to be invoiced so I don't suspect fraud but I'm a little surprised that Paypal doesn't provide an obvious way to locate, view and pay an invoice from their website without first clicking on the link in the invoice email. The search feature seems to only search through invoices that I've already paid. Have I missed something?

Sometimes I need choke all the time, sometimes I don't. What's going on?

26HP V-twin B&S (44P777 0117 E1) here

Some days I only need to choke for 4-5 minutes before I can release and the mower runs fine. Other days I have to leave the choke fully-engaged the entire time I'm mowing. If a jet was clogged, wouldn't behavior be more consistent?

I've read that the plastic intake manifold on these B&S engines can sometimes warp from heat and let air in behind the carb. I guess the only way to test that is to spray carb cleaner around the area while the engine is running and hot and see what happens? What are the chances of that starting a fire?

In Android, if I want to limit app permissions without disabling those permissions, is a sandboxing app like Island the answer?

Suppose I have an app that refuses to run unless I grant permission to access and share photos. Now, I have no objection to allowing the app to access and view images that it generates. And I might could be convinced that sharing those images with 3rd parties makes sense for diagnostics. But I'm not willing to allow that app unrestricted access to share unrelated photos.

Is running the app inside a sandbox the solution? Can I put the app in a sandbox, grant the necessary permissions, and the app be happy despite not having permission to access other photos on the device?

And is it seamless? That is, when I start the app does it automatically fire up the sandbox?

And, finally, are files and images created inside the sandbox visible outside the sandbox without jumping through hoops? I'm mostly interested in this from the point of view of cleaning up storage in the future. Can I easily locate, size and delete files from the "mainland" that were created in an "island"? Or are those files essentially invisible unless I go into the sandbox to cleanup?

Adding circuits to a finished garage: okay to run wiring through conduit attached to the wall near the ceiling?

I have a finished 3-car garage but unfortunately all the outlets are on a single circuit. I'd like to add a 20A@120V circuit and a 30A@240V circuit. The circuit panels are in this garage which makes access to additional power easy but I want the outlets on the other side of the garage ~44ft away. Instead of opening the wall at each stud to drill, are there any issues with running wires in conduit near the ceiling?

When a video auto-loops, the player hangs before resuming 3-4 seconds into the video.

What's up?

When a video auto-loops the player hangs before resuming 3-4 secs into the video. The practical upshot is the first 3-4 secs of the video are cut. If the video is shorter than that 3-4 sec duration all you see is the initial frame before it loops around (and hangs) again.

Disabling 'loop' from the player menu allows me to re-play the video from the beginning repeatedly. So it seems to be related to the loop feature.

Similarly, disabling RES and using the default Reddit video player allows me to re-play videos from the beginning.

Where does it happen?

Doesn't seem to be related to a particular subreddit or video host. I see it happen with videos, for example, in the /r/whatcouldgowrong sub.

What browser extensions are installed?

  • uBlock Origin (disabled for this test)
  • No Script (set to permissive for this test)
  • Multi-account containers
  • RES
  • KeepassXC-Browser
  • Cookie Auto-Delete

  • Night mode: false

T-mobile fiber's customer login insists on sending 2FA codes to email?

According to my profile information, Google Authenticator-style 2FA is enabled. But every time I've logged-in T-mobile has sent the 2FA code to my email. There's no option to say "No, let me enter an authenticator code instead".

Has T-mo abandoned authenticator-style TOTP and just not updated their user profiles?

ZT 2800 bypass valve won't engage

I noticed today that only the left size hydro on my Scag Freedom Z could go into freewheeling mode. The right wheel remains powered regardless of the dump lever position. The right dump lever turns smoothly but doesn't seem to do anything. Any idea what might be the culprit? I'd really rather not have to disassemble the hydro.

Pixel 9: Is there a way to view when a notification was dismissed?

Pixel 9 Pro running stock Android 16 with the May security updates (June updates haven't filtered to me yet?)

Every once in a while, I'll have a alarm or reminder that will seemingly not trigger but when I check notification history it shows in the 'dismissed' list. Usually I gaslight myself into thinking I must've dismissed it early and forgot about it.

It happened again this morning, this time for a reminder that should have triggered while I was sitting here at my desk. Luckily I had an unrelated alarm set for the same time on my computer and I saw that event popup and remembered the phone reminder should have happened at the same time. Notification history on my phone shows the phone alarm was dismissed but I have no memory of dismissing it early and the alarm certainly didn't go off.

Is there a way to view when a phone notification was dismissed?

For accounts with multiple numbers, is the same port-out passcode used for each number?

My wife and I have two lines on a very old mobile share plan. Now that the monthly bill for those two lines has exceeded $150/mo, it's time to switch to something cheaper. When I set up my online account years ago, I selected a passcode for number-porting. Does that passcode apply to every number on the account or just the primary number (implying that my wife needs to generate a passcode of her own before she ports out)?

Fuel filter bubbling after stopping the engine after an hour of mowing

Scag mower with 26hp B&S. Bought the mower secondhand last fall. Since I've owned it, the engine has needed to crank for a bit to start after sitting for a week, kind of like after you replace a carburetor and the fuel lines and bowl are empty. Yesterday I think I discovered why: after cutting the engine after mowing for an hour, the fuel filter bubbled for a while. After about an hour, the bubbling stopped. The fuel level in the filter seemed to be unchanged.

The bubbles appear to be originating from the engine side of the filter. On this engine, the filter is between the tank and the pump so it looks like: tank -> filter -> fuel pump -> carb.

I figure it's either gas in engine-side of the fuel line evaporating or the fuel line is sucking in air after the engine stops. The lines appear snug and are clamped and I don't see any evidence of leaks or cracks so I think the lines and the fuel pump housing is intact. So that leaves evaporation.

Question is: why? If gas in the bowl is evaporating, it seems like the fuel solenoid would prevent it the vapors from flowing back down the fuel line (the solenoid does 'click' so it's working). And there's no OEM heat shield around the fuel lines so I presume B&S deemed a shield unnecessary.

What's going on here?

Anybody seen hour meter tick slower when the deck is engaged? My secondhand Freedom seems to increment normally when the deck isn't engaged but increments at maybe 1/7 or 1/8 normal speed when the deck is engaged?

Orgzly Revived for Android: Sync to Dropbox results in "Failed overwriting [dest filename]" error

This has happened a couple times since I migrated away to Orgzly Revived. The last time it happened I stupidly attempted to help Orgzly overwrite the destination files by deleting them from the Dropbox side and wound up causing all kinds of problems with links on the Orgzly side.

Since syncing to Dropbox seems to be a recurring problem for Orgzly Revived, is there any work being done to enable syncing to other cloud options? Google Drive perhaps?

Hi. Firefox 140.9.0esr on OpenSuse 15.6 (Linux x86-64)

Today, sporadically, FF has opened a dialog requesting my primary password. This is odd because (1) I do not use FF to store logins or passwords and (2) I was not in the process of logging into a site when the dialogs have appeared. While I have a primary password defined, there are no saved credentials and "Ask to save passwords" setting is disabled.

Does FF use the primary password for other purposes?

We moved a while back and due to tree roots we weren't able to dig up any of our waist-high hostas to bring with us. We bought them back around 2011 from a tiny little plant stand set up in someone's front yard. They came in 2-3 gallon pots so they were already a lot bigger than anything you find at Lowes or Home Depot. Anybody know of a nearby plant stand these days that sells large hostas like that? Maybe someone who recently divided theirs and is selling the parts?

Central Kentucky, T-Mo fiber since fall 2025.

My pfSense-style router runs a packet-loss logger 24/7 that continually pings my first upstream hop. Results are logged to an RRD. Since last week, ping has reported a number of duplicate packets (anywhere from 0% to 25% duplicates per 60s interval)

Logs from the last 20 minutes:
