Starting college soon and I have literally nothing to wear, help me build a wardrobe on a budget?

Okay so this year I'm finally starting college and I'm realizing I have a mild fashion crisis on my hands. For the past few years I was in full study mode — barely went out, no makeovers, no cute outings, nothing. My entire closet is just jeans and oversized tees. That's it. That's the wardrobe.

Now attendance at my college is 75%, so I'm going to be there almost every day, and I really don't want to be the person recycling the same 3 outfits every week. But I also don't have unlimited money to throw at this, so I need to build something decent without going broke.

What are the actual essentials I should invest in? Like a solid capsule wardrobe that mixes and matches well, looks put-together, but doesn't require me to own 40 different outfits? Also open to tips on where to shop affordably, what fabrics/fits actually hold up, and any beginner mistakes I should avoid.

Basically- help a jeans-and-oversized-tee girl glow up before day one 😭

Anybody joining Amity Kolkata for BTech in CSE (AI & ML)?

I'm joining Amity Kolkata this year and really wanna make some friends.

(Before you start judging everyone for studying at Amity, you should also acknowledge that people may have their reasons. In my case, I had a medical emergency requiring surgery, so I couldn't sit for WBJEE. Furthermore, my health condition led my parents to advise against pursuing studies in Bangalore, despite my COMEDK scores.)

Starting college this year, What are the best entry-level tech side hustle?

Hey everyone,

I’m starting my B.Tech in CSE this year and want to earn some pocket money, but I need a realistic path.

I’m a complete beginner at development (just learning basics), so I don't have the skills or portfolio to do actual freelance coding or standard engineering internships yet.

I'm looking for remote, part-time roles that won't completely burn me out before my college classes even start. Ideally, I want something that:

Connects to tech/AI: Something I can actually put on a resume later to show early professional experience (like AI data annotation, prompt testing, or basic technical support).

Is entry-level friendly: Focuses on general tech-literacy, logical thinking, and language skills rather than deep coding mastery.

Any tips on how to land these as a student would be amazing.

Thanks!

honestly desperate at this point, where are you guys finding 1 RKs near Amity? 😭

Hey everyone,

I’m starting college at Amity Kolkata soon and I am seriously struggling to find a place. I've been searching everywhere and I just can't find anything anymore.

Everything the brokers are offering me is so faaaar away from campus, and I really need something nearby. I am strictly looking for an independent 1 RK flat entirely for myself with no restrictions, but it feels impossible right now.

Are there any seniors or current Amity students who can please help me out? Where did you guys actually manage to get your 1 RKs from? 😭

If anyone knows a reliable broker, has a lead, or knows of an available flat close to college, please please contact me. I’d be so incredibly grateful. Thank you! 😭🙏🏻

A brother of mine(7x hackathon winner) is pushing me to join HexaFalls 2 in Kolkata, but I'm a complete beginner with no team. What’s the play?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to participate in my very first hackathon, HexaFalls 2, which is taking place in-person at JIS University, Agarpara, Kolkata on July 25-26.

To give some context: one of my older brothers has won almost seven hackathons, and he is strongly pushing me to get out of my comfort zone and just go for it. Because of his background, he insists that experiencing an in-person hackathon environment is the absolute best way to learn, even if I feel underprepared right now.

The problem is, I don't have a team yet, and I'm still figuring out how to navigate this as a complete beginner. My tech stack is basic frontend (HTML5, CSS3, basic JS) and a bit of Python, and I'm currently trying to learn Tailwind CSS and Git/GitHub basics before the event. Outside of tech, my strongest asset is public speaking and national-level debating, so I can easily handle a pitch or final presentation.

Since I don't have a group locked in, I wanted to ask for some genuine advice from this sub:

How should I approach the team-formation phase at the venue? Since I don't have a pre-made group, what is the best way to find open teams on Day 1 without getting lost in the crowd?

How can a solo beginner best bring value to a team? Aside from handling the final presentation pitch, what can I focus on during the 24-48 hours to make sure I'm actively helping the developers?

What is the number one thing you wish you knew before your very first in-person hackathon?

I'm really just looking to learn, experience the environment, and build something cool. Any constructive advice or strategies would be incredibly helpful. Thank you!

As a new CSE (AI/ML) student, also embarking on a business venture, help me build the ultimate tech gear.

Hey everyone,

I’m starting college soon for CSE with an AI/ML specialization. On top of that, I’m juggling an intensive online course from IIT Patna and working on a business idea with a friend that we plan to take to hackathons and pitches. My schedule is going to be packed with screen time, long desk hours, and 24-hour dev sprints.

For my main machine, I already have a MacBook Air M3. Other than that, my tech shopping list is a complete blank slate.

Instead of me guessing what gear will actually survive this routine, I wanted to ask you guys to build the perfect starter kit for me.

Drop your absolute holy-grail recommendations for these categories:

Desk & Study Setup: What gear or peripherals make pulling long hours at a desk comfortable and efficient?

MacBook Performance: Since the M3 Air is fanless, what do you recommend to keep it cool when running heavy datasets or ML models so it doesn't throttle?

On-the-Go / Hackathon Gear: What are your go-to accessories (hubs, power banks, etc.) that can survive a 24-hour coding marathon away from a wall outlet? Also, what kind of protective sleeve should I get to make sure my MacBook doesn't get scratched while I'm moving around?

Bags: What specific backpack is durable and spacious enough to carry a laptop, chargers, a change of clothes, and daily gear without destroying your shoulders?

Note-taking & Textbooks: Do people even use physical books or notebooks for CSE anymore, or should I just go entirely digital?

Tell me exactly what brands or specific items are actually worth the money and what I should completely skip.

Thanks!

starting college soon + going to a lot of pitch events/hackathons. what are your ultimate wardrobe essentials?

Hey everyone,

I’m starting college soon for a tech degree, but my friend and I are also working on a business idea together. We’re planning to hit a bunch of hackathons, networking events, and pitch competitions, so my schedule is going to be a mix of running around campus, long study nights, and sudden days where I need to look professional and presentable.

My wardrobe right now is basically a blank slate, and I need help figuring out what to actually buy. Instead of me guessing, I wanted to ask you guys to recommend a starter kit for me.

Drop your absolute holy-grail recommendations for these categories:

Daily Campus Wear: What are the best everyday staples that look put-together but are comfortable enough for long days?

The "Founder" Look: What should I wear for business pitches and presentations? Looking for sharp, professional pieces that don't feel too boring or stiff.

Shoes & Heels: What sneakers are actually comfortable for walking all day? Also, what heels or formal shoes won't destroy my feet if I have to stand and present for hours?

Bags: What specific backpacks or bags are durable and big enough to hold a laptop and daily essentials but still look good?

College Makeup: What are your go-to minimal products for a quick daily routine that lasts through hot days but can level up for a professional meeting?

Tell me exactly what brands or specific items are worth the money and what I should completely skip. Thanks!

prep for college + side hustle: what do I actually need to buy?

Hey guys,

I’m starting college soon for CSE (AI/ML tracking) and I’m also juggling an online course from IIT Patna on the side. Plus, my friend and I are working on a business idea that we’re taking to a bunch of hackathons and pitches, so my schedule is going to be absolutely packed with screen time, endless study nights, and random days where I need to look professional.

I already have a MacBook Air M3, but other than that, my shopping list is completely blank.

Since I'm balancing regular classes, heavy tech loads, and business presentation days, I really want to get my life sorted before day one. Instead of me guessing what to buy, I wanted to ask you guys to build the perfect starter kit for me.

Drop your absolute holy-grail recommendations below for these categories:

Tech & Desk Gear: What do I actually need to survive long hours at a desk and 24-hour hackathons?

Wardrobe & Shoes: What are the staples for daily campus wear vs. looking professional for business pitches? Also need shoe/heels recommendations that won't kill my feet.

Bags: What can actually hold a laptop, chargers, and daily essentials without breaking my back?

Makeup & Personal Care: What works for a quick daily routine that lasts through hot days but can level up for a presentation?

Dorm Survival & Books: What are the absolute lifesavers for a crazy schedule? Also, do people even buy physical textbooks for CSE anymore?

Tell me exactly what brands or items to buy and what to completely skip.

Thanks!

Queries regarding Online/Hybrid BS in AI & Cybersecurity (Exam centers, Convocation, and dual-degree with local B.Tech?)

Hey everyone,

I am planning to join the 4-year online/hybrid BS in Artificial Intelligence & Cybersecurity program offered by IIT Patna (CEP). I had a few urgent questions regarding how the program runs logistically and would love to hear from current students or seniors who know the system.

To give some context, I recently had a major medical emergency and underwent surgery, which forced me to miss major engineering entrance exams. Because of my recovery and personal reasons, I absolutely cannot leave Kolkata right now. I don’t want to drop a year due to my illness, which is why this hybrid program is a lifesaver for me.

However, I have a few specific doubts before I finalize my admission:

Semester Exams: Are the end-semester exams conducted completely online from home, or do we have to visit designated physical exam centers? If there are physical centers, does IIT Patna have center options in or near Kolkata?

Convocation: Upon successful completion of the 4 years, do hybrid/online BS students get invited to the main IIT Patna campus for a traditional, offline convocation ceremony to receive their degrees?

Dual-Degree (Parallel B.Tech): Because I am terrified of the "online-only" stigma on a resume among traditional Indian HRs, I am considering enrolling in a local private college in Kolkata for a regular, physical B.Tech just to hold an offline degree safety net. Under UGC rules this is legal, but does IIT Patna's hybrid program schedule allow enough flexibility to run it side-by-side with a regular college? Or are the live classes and project deadlines too demanding?

If anyone currently enrolled in this BS program can share their experience regarding the exam pattern, the offline campus visits, and the overall workload, it would be immensely helpful.

Thank you so much!

Desperately want the IIT Patna AI BS degree, but terrified of doing only an online degree. Is a local tier-3 B.Tech backup worth it?

Hey everyone,

I’m in a major dilemma regarding my college plans and really need some honest perspective from seniors.

Long story short: I had a major medical emergency this year that required surgery, which forced me to miss key entrance exams and second shifts. Because of my recovery and personal reasons, I absolutely cannot leave Kolkata right now. I don't want to lose an academic year sitting at home, which leaves me with very limited options.

I recently got accepted into the 4-year online/hybrid BS in AI & Cybersecurity at IIT Patna. I desperately want to do this program because the curriculum is amazing and the IIT tag is highly valuable. However, everything I read online says that having only an online degree looks really bad to traditional employers and will get my resume automatically filtered out.

Because of that fear, I am considering joining Amity Kolkata for a regular, physical B.Tech in CSE (AI/ML) where I qualify for a scholarship. I don't want to juggle two intense curriculums at once, but I've always wanted a traditional B.Tech degree, and having a physical campus baseline feels necessary to avoid the "online-only" stigma.

Given my medical constraints and the fact that I want to focus heavily on off-campus opportunities (hackathons, portfolios, self-taught dev work), what should I do? Is it truly a bad idea to rely only on the online IIT degree? If I do take admission at a local tier-3 like Amity just for the offline B.Tech degree certificate, will it actually save my resume, or am I overthinking the online degree stigma?

Would love to hear your honest thoughts. Thanks!

Doing a regular B.Tech (CSE AI/ML) at Amity Kolkata + Online BS at IIT Patna simultaneously. Crazy plan or smart move?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some realistic feedback on a unique dual-degree path I’m planning due to some unexpected life events.

Long story short: I had a major medical emergency this year that required surgery, which completely forced me to miss key entrance exams and second shifts. Because I absolutely cannot leave Kolkata right now for personal/medical reasons and don't want to lose an academic year to my illness, my local options became very limited.

I’ve decided to join Amity Kolkata for a regular, on-campus B.Tech in CSE (AI/ML) where I qualify for an institutional scholarship. However, to compensate for the tier-3 tag and push myself technically, I am also enrolling in the online/hybrid 4-year Bachelor of Science (BS) in AI & Cybersecurity from IIT Patna.

Under the UGC guidelines, pursuing a regular degree alongside an online degree is completely legal, but I know the workload will be intense. My main goals are:

Keep a physical college life and get a traditional B.Tech degree locally.

Leverage the advanced curriculum, rigorous grading, and elite brand name of the IIT Patna program to build a powerful resume.

Focus entirely on off-campus placements, hackathons, and independent portfolio building (I'm already doing a certification course from IIT Roorkee to prepare).

To anyone who has balanced an online degree alongside a regular engineering college, or seniors who know the workload at Amity Kolkata: Is this doable? Will having the IIT Patna BS on my resume alongside a regular B.Tech give me a significant edge for off-campus tech roles, or am I setting myself up for massive burnout?

Would love to hear your honest thoughts. Thanks!
