I’m a conlanger, so I want to say something.

Every sound in Esperanto has its own letter except for one: [d͡z], like in “edzo” The Esperanto alphabet was created with a one-sound-one-letter principle, with that single exception.

As I said, I make languages, and my favorite diacritic is the circumflex, I use it a lot

So now… drum roll please…

I PROPOSE THE LETTER D̂ d̂

You can also write it using the h- or x-system, like “dh” or “dx”

so now it’s ed̂o

In Old Urziç, there was a /q/ sound, but it was lost over time and became /k/. Now I need a way to differentiate it from the original /k/

I had the idea that it could be pronounced more strongly. I tried to find a similar sound in real languages but couldn’t find anything at first. Then I came across /kʰ/, which is good, but it feels a bit too similar to a normal /k/

So I kept searching and found /k͈/. That actually feels like what I had in mind the whole time I just didn’t know it existed. But now I have a problem, I’ve heard that this sound is specific to Korean and doesn’t appear in other languages because it’s a unique feature of Korean.

So now I’m unsure if I use it, would that be unrealistic, or is it fine to use it to create that distinction?

In my language, the word for “car” or “vehicle” “Hovar” comes from the root H-V-R, which originally meant nonsense/unbelievable or something that couldn’t be believed because of its absurdity. However, that meaning has been lost, and now the word refers only to a car or vehicle

I’m making a conlang for a story I’m working on, and in it there’s a character who is deaf (she’s called D̂alfa). So I’m thinking about creating a constructed sign language. it’s time to restore balance to the linguistic ecosystem

My language is Semitic-inspired, but I’ve always been fascinated by how German forms compound words, like Lego-style stacking. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just create a word on the spot to joke about someone? For example, there’s a German insult that literally translates to something like "edge-of-pool-swimmer" which is honestly kind of awesome. But I don’t know how to design a Semitic-inspired language that can also produce a huge number of compound words. Also, my language is supposed to be Semitic-inspired but with a lot of Slavic influence, so I’m not sure how to make all of that work together

I created a romanization system for Arabic and I’d like to share it here. It’s still a work in progress, especially for some letters like hamza and 3ayn, it’s called huruf al  rumiyyiah  but here’s the full system.

Consonants

b = b
t = t
c = ث
j = j
ħ = ح
ç = خ
d = د
ð = ذ
r = ر
z = ز
s = س
sh = ش

sc = ص
dh = ض
th = ط
zh = ظ
gh = غ

f = ف
q = ق
k = ك
l = ل (ɫ when heavy/emphatic ” you could replace it with the polish “ł” if you can’t write it ) e.g. ”Aɫɫah “ or with the polish ł “Ałłah”

m = م
n = ن (ń for nun ghunnah)
h = ه
w = و (sometimes “o” when followed by a vowel)
y = ي (sometimes “i” when followed by a vowel, e.g. “Al Arabia”)

Vowels

Short vowels:
a, u, i, e

Long vowels:
ā, ū (or “ou”), ī

Diphthongs

aw = ـَو
ay = ـَي

Special pronunciation rules

• w = “o” when it appears before a vowel
• y = “i” when it appears before a vowel

Example:
العربية → Al Arabia

Definite article rule

I use a special letter: ǎ

• If the next letter is a moon letter, it is pronounced “al”
• If the next letter is a sun letter , it becomes “a + doubled letter”

Problem letters / special sounds

I wasn’t fully sure about some of these, so I experimented:

à = ع
x = ء (hamza, but only when needed)
ǐ = ئ
ǒ = ؤ
á = ى

Extra letters

p = پ
v = ڤ
x = اكس

Notes

• I don’t yet have a perfect solution for 3ayn and hamza, but I’m currently using à for ʿayn and x for hamza
• I also use ń for nun ghunnah
• This system tries to stay close to pronunciation while still being easy to type in Latin letters, and look great overall

The North Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger, when a traveler came along wrapped in a warm cloak.

They agreed that the one who first succeeded in making the traveler take his cloak off should be considered stronger than the other.

Then the North Wind blew as hard as he could, but the more he blew the more closely did the traveler fold his cloak around him;

and at last the North Wind gave up the attempt. Then the Sun shined out warmly, and immediately the traveler took off his cloak.

And so the North Wind was obliged to confess that the Sun was the stronger of the two.
