In India, members of the traditional transgender (Hijra) community have historically visited new business openings and houses to offer "blessings" in exchange for small monetary gifts.

However, over the last few years, these practices have frequently been hijacked by organized extortion rings. These syndicates enter shops and aggressively demand massive sums of money (often thousands of dollars relative to local purchasing power).

When shopkeepers refuse to pay the extortion money, the standard tactic used by these groups is to launch into loud, abusive tirades and begin stripping publically inside the store, forcing the owner to settle the cash demand just to make them stop and leave. Police have also frequently arrested cisgender men who cross-dress specifically to run these aggressive begging rackets.
