I need duas

Difficult time with my wife at home. We have beautiful children and I don't want to break up. I know there's a lot of khair in marriage and Allah allows divorce but I really don't want that

I'm not the kind to ask for duas and will do lots of duas myself. But maybe Allah is happy with one of you more than me right now, and your dua can help me 🤷🏽

That's all folks ❤️

Advice needed re dad/mom arguments

My wife and I are not in a good place with regular fights. There's been a lot of stress after our third kid.

When we try to talk about our issues (one book called it a "learning conversation"), we are always arguing past each other and can't seem to find a way/deciding forward on many issues.

Yes, we're looking for a counselor. But I have a very discrete question: Do folks have an idea on how such conversations should be structured, how often they should occur and what we should note as a reference for the next time as decisions.

I will have a paper/pen ready for our next learning conversation. What notes am I taking to create some good forward progress that we can build on. I am thinking: values, things that bother, boundaries, positions, etc.

Thanks folks.

"The bus is on its way." Nice Brooklyn moment

I'm waiting in the heat for the bus that is already ~10 mins later than the live time on the app...

And a lady in a car rolls down her window and says, "the bus is coming! I just saw it on MacDonald!"

I just thought it was super nice 🙂

Thoughts on the Lavon Affair?

I am Pakistani. When my grandfather moved to Pakistan during the partition, there was anti-Muslim violence in India and anti-Hindu violence in Pakistan.

I believe there was a lot of anti-Jew sentiment in many countries when Israel was created. Independent of that, the Lavon Affair suggests that Israel created some fear in Egypt in 1954 to convince Jews to move to Israel.

I believe there is sufficient historic evidence that this happened and Israel's 2005 recognition of the survivors confirms this. But it is not talked about much and bringing it up got me kicked out of Judaism sub.

What are your thoughts on the whole operation? And how big was this kind of operation? When I heard that Israel was trying to buy Ahmedenijad I really feel that we should re-examine some conspiracy theories against Israel just like we should re-examine all of US or Russian interference around the globe in the last 80 years.

What are your love languages?

How has your faith inspired you to be nice/kind to others around you, whether they're friends, family, loved ones, spouses, kids, parents, etc.

And what about with neighbors, homeless, poor. Can people share how their Islam makes them better citizens and help the community?

Many Muslims I know are generally nice people. There are a lot of bad apples also, but I think our religion has focused a lot on good manners and being nice to our community.

I want to see how we do that

[OC] Obesity rates per country (2024)

This chart is part of my latest Youtube video on obesity. You can find the video here and you can play with the data in this spreadsheet.

I have a Youtube channel called Memeable Data where I make data-driven documentaries.

Not a single country managed to lower their obesity rates between 1990 and 2024, according to WHO data. The video discusses the data and research for these trends.

Stop dangling hadith in front of people's faces in a vacuum without context

I don't want hadith denier responses, please. I did not have a flair for that.

In sahih Bukhari, there are two narrations next to each other, one saying they dajjal will be blind in his right eye, and the other saying that dajjal will be blind in his left eye.

Hadith are one of the few well-preserved oral traditions and some collectors have almost scientifically compiled hadith. Bukhari is considered to be the top of this game. And yet there are two contradictory ahadith.

This has taught me that hadith - and frankly, the Quran and all of Islam -- is meant to always be read in light of the bigger picture and the body of knowledge - as well as history, grammar, etc etc etc.

In this example, maybe the idea is that Dajjal is blind in one eye, or if we see other context, maybe it was saying that dajjal has a clear defining characteristic.

Then not every hadith makes a ruling. The fiqh scholars had criteria on what can be put into the law as a "required" vs an "optional" action. Or maybe there's nothing you can gain from it except an interesting event.

So again: do the work, read people who spent a lifetime doing this instead of just googling something. The instant access to Bukhari doesn't make you a scholar. Scholars have probably already addressed the hadith you're using to cause a stir...

WOMEN'S SECTION IN MOSQUES

Salaam all.

Especially for women in here: if there was a rating on how comfortable/welcoming mosques are for women, what factors would you put in that rating?

"A scale for the women-friendly mosque was devised in 2010 and repeated in 2020. The scale for both surveys consisted of four indicators: (1) no dividers in the mosque; (2) women serve on the mosque board; (3) women’s attendance at Jum’ah averages about 19%; (4) women’s activities and/or a women’s group are present. A mosque scored as excellent if it had all four indicators; good if it had three; fair if it had one or two indicators; and poor if it had none." Source: ISPU

Disclaimer: i'm a guy, so I have opinions but those opinions are probably not as relevant.

There are bad drivers, and then there are drivers that ruin it for everyone.

This clown is not only illegally parked on a handicapped spot, he did it with such recklessness that he made it difficult for the family next spot over.

Cortelyou Rd and Coney Island

Would neighbors please join me in requesting some commercial parking next to Stratford and Cortelyou? The trucks are ALWAYS blocking traffic there at rush hour

https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/contact/contact-form.shtml

The traffic and the larger, express MTA buses are constantly stuck when a trailer double parks for the organic store.

For example,

"We need some truck loading spaces during morning rush at Stratford and Cortelyou. The major intersection at Coney Island Ave has new traffic rules and there are dozens of MTA buses, including express coaches, that get stuck during rush hour because of the trucks unloading during rush hour."

How rabies progresses in humans.

In 1955, Iranian doctors documented the days of a villager who developed rabies after a rabid wolf attack. The resulting film remains one of the few historical recordings of rabies progressing in a human patient.
