For your Sunday listening pleasure, I share with you the childhood band of Chris Duffy from the Magic Beans and Thom Lafond and Dmitry Bolotny from Banshee Tree.

Before they all moved to Colorado, they were kids in the Albany, NY suburbs playing in a wondrous, wondrous band called Dirty Paris. If you took equal parts Umphreys, Bisco, and lounge jazz you’d have a good idea of their sound. It was so fresh and creative and the songs were so memorable.

They were literal kids and would sell out venues. It was truly a spectacle to behold. This album was recorded while they were in high school I think. It still sounds fresh today. I miss this music so much.

So I just got my 2nd pricey old record from the UK recently and both of them ($100+ records) were shipped naked outside of ANY sleeve. While I appreciate the consideration of avoiding a seamsplit on a grail inner sleeve, putting a bare record against a jacket cover and sleeve seems insane to me.

This one has some gnarly sizzle in between all the songs and I’m wondering if it’s because of how it was shipped?

So Skinless’s big album Foreshadowing Our Demise finally has a proper vinyl release and there’s about 40 copies left between the 3 variants.

I’m sure I’m not the first here but this was a pleasant dinner surprise.

I don’t know how to title this without seeming stupid or insincere but I’m 40 and grew up on death metal in high school - so much that I’m even in the music video for The Optimist by Skinless because they’re from here. We were big on Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Immortal, Dying Fetus, Nile, Entombed etc but none of us liked Deicide.

I don’t really know where it came from, but we all made fun of Glen and in true close-minded elitist fashion, we judged the band without listening to the music and derided them heavily and mocked them mercilessly.

Fast forward a bit and I got sick of the close-minded attitude in metal here and discovered jambands. This led to a major tangent in my life until a few years ago when I decided to try Emperor again and fell in love, finally understanding them (I preferred Immortal and old Dimmu Borgir as a kid). I’m not sure what spawned it, but I gave Deicide another try - probably because I simply didn’t know the material well and now as an adult (especially a semi-professional musician), I was curious and I felt bad about calling them “gay” and “shitty” as a kid so I wanted to actually know the songs.

Guys, Deicide fucking rules. Holy shit.

I love the first 4 equally. They’re all perfect IMO. I need to listen to Scars more but I love the title track.

When I was in high school, the story was that Insineratehymn and In Torment In Hell were purposefully rushed and were garbage as a result, because they wanted to get out of their contract with Roadrunner. They also sound very very bad, production-wise. Once Upon the Cross is maybe the best production I’ve ever heard in death metal, tied with Left Hand Path, Amongst the Catacombs, Into Cold Darkness (Vital Remains), and Shadows of the Past (Sentenced).

I can’t seem to get into modern Deicide because the riffing of the Hoffman’s was the magic element and I just don’t feel it anymore when I listen to the new stuff, combined with the fact that Banished By Sin is Exhibit A in sterile, clean, lifeless computer production.

Anyway, point being…. Anyone wanna talk about Deicide with me? I have nobody to talk about them with because my friends from HS still trade in the ignorant bashing and don’t actually know the material.

Not sure if I have a favorite song - maybe Once Upon the Cross and Serpents of the Light. I also love I Am No One, Father Baker’s, and Lunatic of Gods Creation.

What stands out about Deicide to me, as a musician, is their focus on triplets and 6-count bar lengths. They are subtly very technical and often in odd meter. They love the 6-count and it’s like Slayer chugging grooves with double bass. They’re like perfect down-the-middle death metal.

Sorry this is long but I loooove Deicide and I am shocked that this has happened to me at 40.

Not sure if this is old practice or common knowledge but I loved seeing security cordon off the entire floor to make everyone get pushed to the front as folks came in, removing the ability for tarpers and blanket people to take large swaths of space on the rail.

Hey team, forgive my noob question I’m sure but I’ve been searching and can’t totally seem to get a clear answer. I’ve been reading that the Sony WM-FX195 is a decent entry-level Walkman. I’m reading that these are better still than anything made today.

I’d like to get a medium-to-high-end player but I’ve no clue what to look for. Are higher model numbers indicative of a better product?

Man I’m just losing all over the place with Discogs lately. A personal grail came up for a good price so I pulled the trigger - Baphomet’s original vinyl pressing of “The Dead Shall Inherit”. After I paid, Discogs was not showing my order. I waited and refreshed. Still no order. After a couple minutes, I went back and saw the record was still available. I panicked and didn’t know what happened, because I was in a poor service area (Verizon sucks up here).

So I figured the sale didn’t push to their servers and bought it again. THAT order didn’t show up either.

Then a few mins later it finally shows up in my history. And naturally of course it billed my credit card twice.

Messaged the seller, and she tried to refund me directly but it kept money because of a currency conversion. The difference ended up being $17 which I’m not okay with just losing like that.

I want to sort this fairly but the problem is the currency conversion. If I return her direct payment (she’s selling her late father’s stuff) will PayPal again keep a cut for currency conversion? It’s going from pounds to dollars. My order was 144.72 pounds and I was billed $202.08. She sent me a direct refund of $185.42.

And does it matter if I request a refund on Paypal or my credit card, is one better?

So… I’m entertaining the idea of selling a guitar. It’s a 2015 Gibson Custom shop Memphis ES Les Paul in Cobraburst. I’ve since upgraded the pickups to Duncan 59s which sound amazing. This is literally the best sounding guitar I’ve ever heard and if I could put these electronics in every guitar I play, I’d be so happy. It’s truly incredible and I use it on our records all the time.

But I just don’t play it anymore because I don’t like Les Paul shapes and we aren’t in the studio as much anymore, playing live much more.

How the hell do I determine what it’s worth? Cuz I think if I could get $4k for it I’d sell it in a heartbeat and forever regret it lol.
