I was at a bar in Taipei and at some point I was making conversation with this lady who was with her British husband. They mentioned they had met after he arrived here to teach English. I then asked "what year did you immigrate here" and he sort of said something like "what do you mean immigrate" and he laughed in a scoffing kind of way and looked a bit irritated after. His wife then answered for him and said 2017 but it was a bit awkward after that.

I didn't feel like it was appropriate to ask if I said anything wrong but my friend who was with me at the bar said maybe the guy didn't like the word immigrate because some white people feel Taiwan is racist against white people because that they can't become citizens, only permanent residents. She said a white guy had explained something like this to her before.
