THE HIDDEN THREAT BEHIND EVERY REEL AND MINI-SERIES AND ITS INSULT ON THE HONOR OF THE PHILIPPINES AND ITS PEOPLE ESPECIALLY IN THE WEST PHILIPPINE SEA

TO My Fellow Filipinos: At first glance, short drama apps may seem like simple entertainment—quick, free, and a way to kill time amid heavy traffic and fatigue from work, school, housework, etc. This recent trend on social media and the internet, which emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, has hit the country and the world at large, and is led by Chinese-made productions, not only in short drama apps, but also in reels and videos on social media and full series compilation videos made on Youtube by third parties. And among those, there are also productions in various languages, including English and Filipino. These, whether live action or AI-generated, last no more than two to three minutes, with the entire production lasting either a full hour or two or more.

But don’t be fooled by them! Watching them comes at the cost of a deeper threat to our culture, economy, and national sovereignty, especially in the West Philippine Sea. This may be painful, but many of us are not aware of this, especially the patrons of these shows, especially the poor and middle class who, because they cannot afford to pay for cable subscriptions, streaming sites, or watching in theaters, enjoy these shows, especially on mobile phones.

Funded and Controlled by the Communist Party of China - The companies behind these apps—both those based in China and their subsidiaries in Western countries—are tightly controlled by the Communist Party of China (CPC) and, since June of this year, by the National Radio and Television Administration of the People’s Republic of China (NRTA). Every actor, director, and film crew member, as well as the production companies that produce them, are obligated to follow the directives of this party and the Chinese government. Your favorite shows are created and controlled by organizations with a secret agenda to spread influence.
Destroying Filipino Culture and Traditional and Modern Values and Beliefs - These short dramas are replacing our natural values of family, respect, and cooperation. They are full of feuds, revenge, vulgarity, and an over-emphasis on money and power—ideas that are foreign and contrary to traditional Filipino and Western values, despite the fact that the dramas from mainland China, which make up the majority of these productions, depict scenes and themes based on Chinese culture, religion, martial arts, and traditional medicine.
Killing Filipino Art and Film, as well as traditional long-form productions worldwide - The rise of short dramas is part of the wider direct result of the loss of ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise in 2020, which left a huge gap in local media. Instead of supporting traditional and quality Filipino films and TV and streaming series, these foreign apps are draining the revenue and support that should be for our own film and television workers, inclusive of actors and workers related to TV and film production. This is also being witnessed in various countries. By watching these shows, you are, in one way or another, contributing to the decline and collapse of traditional media, especially television and movies, not only in our country, but around the world.
Taking Advantage of Extreme Poverty and High Prices - Due to the continuous increase in the price of goods and the cost of living in the Philippines, many Filipinos especially the poor and middle classes, especially lower middle class families, are looking for quick and cheap entertainment, especially if it is “retail” or on a tight budget. These foreign companies are taking advantage of our situation to attract potential viewers, collect personal data, and make money through micro-transactions especially on apps like GCash.
Imported Propaganda From Chinese Web Fiction - The stories broadcast on these apps are almost all adapted from Chinese web novels or online fiction created for the Chinese market since 2002 on websites like Qidian and Jinjiang Literature City. Its plots—stories of sudden wealth, extreme revenge, and domination—are simply translated to appeal to Filipino tastes, while pushing Chinese views, ideology, and culture into our society.
Funding for the Occupation of the West Philippine Sea - Every fund, ad revenue, and subscription fee that goes into these apps, as well as views on 3rd party compliations on Youtube, goes back into the Communist Chinese economy through Mainland Chinese companies, especially tech companies and their overseas subsidiaries. The money you may earn from watching and patronizing them indirectly helps fund Communist China’s ships, militarization, and illegal activities in the West Philippine Sea that are harassing our Filipino fishermen, as well as our Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard soldiers who guard our seas.

Until when will you be blind and addicted to Duanju, Juan dela Cruz?

Can’t you see that every hour and every season of watching, including the money you pour into these shows, goes into the pockets of the Chinese and the companies that broadcast them?

Don’t you know that watching these programs helps our enemies who are plundering our marine resources and repeatedly harming our fishermen and soldiers and undermining our sovereignty and dignity especially in the seas that should be OURS?

Don’t you know the poor conditions of the actors, crew and production staff in these productions in China and in many other countries?

Don’t you know that the payment for short drama apps and the freenium model in such programs all go to Mainland Chinese tech companies that are indirectly affiliated with the State in the implementation of its claims and actions in maritime territory, and in its activities against its own citizens and against other countries especially through the Belt and Road Initiative?

And don’t you know that behind the actors, staff and production crew, as well as the employees of the tech companies that promote these dramas, are the faces of loyal members of the Communist Party of China and the Communist Youth League of China who have an ideology and mentality that is against us and our principles and that our compatriots in Korea even fought against in the 50s?

WAKE UP, FILIPINOS! Duanju and short dramas, especially Chinese productions, should not and should not be part of our lives, our culture and arts and our long history of film and television! We must not trade our principles, culture, and national rights - including our money - for a few minutes of entertainment!

We must stand up against the pressures of Communist China on us and the entire world! We must avoid and boycott such shows as a people and return to traditional TV and movies, including legal streaming sites, and patronizing theaters, because of the danger they all pose, especially to our sovereignty and dignity!

We must help, especially our legislators, our countrymen, especially the poor and lower middle class who are attracted by Mainland Chinese tech companies to patronize such shows that are against our values and morals, especially in setting high wages and lifting every Filipino out of poverty! We must also support all our TV networks and film production companies and their counterparts abroad who continue to fight against these shows! And everyone must learn and be enlightened as invididuals and as a whole nation that patronizing such shows is a big mistake that exacerbates the pain of our sailors, fisherfolk, and the defenders of our sovereignty and rights in our West Philippine Sea!

For 35 years, inclusive of the past 4 of the ongoing war waged against it by Russia, and for over the past 12 years since EuroMaidan, Ukraine has evolved from just a Republic of the evil Soviet Union and a backwater in Eastenr Europe into a pro-Western nation now more than ever united in the common goals of the free West: the fight and struggle for the defense of Capitalism, Liberalism and Liberal Social Democracy against far-rightist and far-leftist enemies, and the struggle against foreign enemies determined to destroy it and worsen the current climate crisis especially thru military means.

The 2024-25 Ukrainian Kursk offensive opened all our eyes into the reality that alongside the defeat of Russia the war also means the resitituion of all the historic territories of Ukraine outside its 1991 borders, as stipulated by no less than Mykola Mikhnovsky in the 1900s - a cause that Ukraine fought with the plans to unify the Kuban with Ukraine in 1918-19. This too is a cause that we here are fighting as well.

To all of you here, thanks for more than a decade of support to Ukraine especially in these past 4 years. Your work, in alliance with NAFO and other like minded pro-Western groups, political parties and organizations, and individuals, has helped Ukraine in its resistance against Russia and its allies and its allied and supported far-leftist and far-rightist aligned individuals, political parties and organizations that have supported its illegal war, aided by Islamist Iran, North Korea and indirectly by Communist China. Let us and all those who have been continuing to assist Ukraine in its time of need be inspired, not just by its fighting people, but also by the countless Western nationals and those of Asian nations even now fighting under Ukraine's flag shoulder to shoulder against a common enemy, to continue the struggle more than ever before until total victory.

And of course too, let us be motivated by our Baltic brethen, who in this time, celebrate 37 years of the Baltic Way protests of 1989, as they too continue to resist Russia and its allies, and continue to aid Ukraine in their common struggle together.

Once more, let us therefore, today, everyday and always, continue to struggle with all our best to combat Fascism, Radical Islamism, Religious Fundamentalism, Socialism, and Communism across the wider world and thus carry on the spirit of the countless millions of martyrs that have had fallen in the struggle against these ideologies for over a century and have died as victims of these ideologies. Let us never give up this long standing struggle until all of these ideologies, illegal and murderous, have all been destroyed and eliminated altogether, especially in the field of battle, as we all as one people await for that very day that the ideologies, values, principles and ideals of the Western World will finally triumph against its enemies.
