Remarkable takes money for orders when you place them

I was interested in ordering the new Paper Pure, and I queried the company about when they take payments for orders. They said they take payments immediately, which is pretty abnormal for online orders like this. I don’t think I’ve ever ordered something that’s not scheduled for immediate delivery and had the payment taken before the order was processed and the item shipped.

Considering how long it will take to get the device, this is a buyer unfriendly way of doing business. This said, I might just wait and buy it from Amazon when its available instead of buying it directly from Remarkable. I prefer buying directly from companies, but I’m not willing to give up my cash now if I won’t get the device for about two months.

tado sub banned because of spam

I guess Reddit works like this, but someone posted a lot of spam in the tado sub yesterday, and Reddit banned the sub. Anyone here a mod for that sub? It would be good if someone set up a new one, I guess with a slightly different name.

Otherwise, are there enough tado users here for questions about how it works? I'm about six weeks into using my setup, and I don't yet understand everything.

Setting up new Kindle, all books are unread

I have about 1200 Kindle books. I just set up a Kindle Scribe that was a warranty replacement, and all my books show as unread. I've had a lot of Kindles over the years, and I've never seen this. Should I expect this to correct itself as the Kindle updates its database? I especially don't want this to mark books unread in my account, and have them transfer to my other Kindles and iPhone and iPad.

Muddy Waters: Folk Singer

I'd never heard this record before, but Apple Music recommended it me today. It's an "unplugged" album, from 1964, with Buddy Guy and Willie Dixon playing with Waters.

I can't get over how much I hear Pigpen's inflections in this singing. I know Pig was influenced by a lot of blues singers, but you can really hear it on these acoustic tracks. Pig didn't use the same range of volume when singing, but the phrasing is really similar.

Worth a listen if you've never heard this album.\

(Also, if you stream it, only listen to the first nine tracks; the rest are "bonus tracks" from other sessions that aren't stripped down.)

HushJet HJ10 whistling noise

I got this a week ago, and right out of the box, there was a loud whistling noise from the motor at speed 3. All the other speeds are fine, which is odd. But speed 3 is one of the speeds I'd want to leave it on overnight, because speed 4 is just a bit too loud.

I called Dyson right after I set up the machine, and they said to let it run for a while and see if it stops, and it hasn't. So I'm going to return it. I don't think I'll buy another; I'll look at other brands instead.

It's a shame. I have two other Dyson air purifiers, and they are both excellent.

I needed some music for a big food prep, so I looked for a show on today’s date. Dang, that is one hot TOO, and the whole sequence form Truckin’ through Wharf Rat is amazing.

I came across an article about the new Paper Pure today, and I think it might fit my needs working with a new client. I’m a writer, and I’m working with a tech company, writing articles about their work. Each article starts with an interview/meeting with one of the executives about the topic at hand. This interviews take place over Zoom, I record them, then transcribe them, then feed them into Claude to get bullet points.

The reason I think this device could help me is I want something to be able to review the transcripts and bullet points in a different context from my computer. I could do this on an iPad with an Apple Pencil, but I hate the experience of writing with an Apple Pencil. My handwriting is terrible, but I would still rather write on something that feels more like a pencil and paper.

It looks like it’s easy enough to get text onto the Remarkable, highlight, and mark it up, then get it back onto my Mac.

The one thing it’s missing is a backlight. That’s not a dealbreaker because I have lights on my desk, and when I work sitting on a sofa in my home office, I have a reading lamp.

So I wouldn’t use the device for writing much; more for reviewing notes, highlighting them, and potentially marking some edits on first draft of my articles. Is this a good use case for the device?

... I saw they laid off 200 employees. I know nothing about this company, but layoffs like this right after a new device is released feel quite dangerous. Should I look for something else?

I bought the first KS in early 2023, and I never used it for writing. I wanted to try it today, and it has "ghost" writing whenever the stylus is about 1cm from the screen, making it impossible to write. Is this a common problem? Is my KS defective? I'd really like to try using it for taking notes, and I'm quite disappointed.

Update: I contacted Amazon customer service and they immediately said that they would send me a replacement. This is pretty surprising considering I bought it just over three years ago. But this must be a problem that they are familiar with.

Is there any way, other than HomeBridge or HomeAssistant, to control a Dyson fan via HomeKit? I'd love to set the Dyson air purifier in my home office to run for, say, ten minutes every morning at full speed to clean the air before I start work. (At least in allergy season, which is now until around September.)

I have more and more smart home stuff, and I'm not quite ready to make the leap to HB or HA...

I have a couple of Dyson air purifiers, but they're both fairly noise, unless they run on the minimum speed. Because of my allergies, I'd like to put one in my bedroom. Is the HJ10 as quiet as they say it is? I want something that can run at night. I have a hot and cold air purifier in my home office, and if it's over about speed 4 it's fairly loud. (Which is not a big deal during the day when I'm working.)

There’s a new “adventure” movie on Amazon Prime Video starring Gerard Butler called Greenland Migration. It’s a post apocalyptic thing where they have to go from one place to another. There’s definitely some long darkish stuff in it.

In the very beginning, the protagonist is looting stuff in an old ship, opening drawers and finding interesting things. Later in the film is a scene where people have to walk across rope bridges over high chasms.

The movie is certainly not inspired by the TLD, but there were definitely moments when it felt like it.

I’ve had agile octopus for about 2 1/2 years, and this is the cheapest month that I’ve had with electricity coming in on average at 8.13 P per kWh. This was taking advantage of the cheap prices to charge my car, especially when pricing was negative; and, on the days when there was negative pricing, I turned off my oil heater and used electric heaters. unfortunately, I had to charge my car a couple of times at nearly 20p, but if not, it would’ve been even less.

I run a small business in the UK, and my bank is one of the leading banks in the country. Today, I was trying to make a payment in their mobile app, and I was blocked, saying I needed to set up "biometric approval."

So this is on a device where I have already been authenticated, and where I use Face ID to log into the device, and to the banking app. Their biometric approval requires that you upload a photo and a voice sample. And for the photo, they say "We encrypt this and store it securely in our database." Yeah, right, that's definitely never going to leak...

I'm quite stunned by how a major bank would use something like this. For many people, it's easy to find a photo. As for voice samples, there are tons of AI tools that can create the voice passphrase from short voice samples. As I'm a podcaster, it's not hard to find them.

A few years ago, another major bank introduced "your voice is your password," and I'm surprised that they still do this, as it is insecure for the same reason.

Anyway, frustration, and now I have to find a UK bank that isn't insecure. Any suggestions?
