How beautiful can black metal actually get while still being black metal?

How straight-up beautiful can black metal get? How would you even define “beauty” in a BM context? Would it be atmoblack, post-black, blackgaze, DSBM, meloblack, black ambient, folk/black, something else, or any and all of the above?

I’ve seen NGE+EoE. Should I see Death (True)2 + Rebirth in theaters?

I’ve seen the original run twice now, and it’s still my GOAT series pick, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it to go to the theaters to see Death (True)2 + Rebirth.

How essential are they? Will I be gaining anything by going to see them?

Thanks, fellow Eva fans.

Post-metal that’s basically post-rock with harsh vocals

I’m looking for something on the lighter side, almost like Cult of Luna’s “Dim” - lots of clean, shimmery guitars but with harsh vocals saved for the right moment, if that makes sense. More beautiful, post-y twinkles than crushing waves of heaviness.

Clean vocals are cool, blackgaze and doomgaze are also fair game. Thanks in advance!

Edit: also *shels!

Which metal band do you think truly “took off?” Artistically or commercially?

I was inspired by the other thread, but I wanted to invert the question in two ways -

  1. Are there any bands who started out kind of mid but then “clicked” or really pushed themselves later in their career?

  2. Are there any bands who were around for a while, maybe a decade plus, before finally getting the recognition they deserved?

Who are the best anime reviewers/critics/analysts to follow?

I’m looking for people or groups who dissect anime in an intelligent and insightful way - IG accounts, podcasts, YouTube channels, blogs, etc.

Are there any noteworthy names who dive DEEP into series and films, put a ton of thought and effort into their opinions, or at least make sound logical arguments as to why a work is deserving of praise/derision?

My 6yo crossed out kids’ faces in her yearbook. Should I be concerned?

My 6yo graduated kindergarten this week, but when her mom looked through her yearbook, she saw several kids’ faces “crossed out,” with two totally scribbled out. There were also several students and teachers who had hearts drawn next to their pictures, but it seemed oddly … mature, in a way, for her age.

Should we be concerned? Might this be a sign of a deeper issue, or are we likely overthinking it?

Possible job in Brea. Where to live?

How’s it going? I’ll be moving to the area in the next few months from WA state, and I’ve been to LA, but I’m totally unfamiliar with OC in general.

I’m a single dad, so schools are a concern. I’d consider myself active and prefer more walkable (and/or bikeable) areas. My kid loves going to parks, and we both love good Japanese food. I’m sure there are decent coffee places in the area. Diversity is a plus. I’m personally into concert venues and independent film theaters, if there are any nearby.

How’s Brea itself? Is it fairly self-contained, or would driving to larger cities sometimes be necessary? How’s the surrounding area? Are there any places within maybe 30 minutes I should look into?

I’m also happy to answer any questions that might help! I’m hoping for a budget under $2.7k, but that’s not a hard rule. Thanks in advance!

(P.S. If this looks familiar, I made a near-identical post about Tustin a while back, but this position pays better).

Which cities in the area have the best mountain views?

Are there any suburbs or satellite cities where I can go to a local park, get coffee, go shopping, etc. and get some awe-inspiring views?

Which medium or large U.S. city has the most striking mountain views?

I’m trying to envision somewhere you can be doing something mundane like going to a local grocery store or getting coffee and be like, “… Damn. I actually get to see this every day.”

Anyone know where to get some solid Lain merch?

Boa is coming to my city in a little over a week, and I feel like this is the perfect opportunity to finally try to snag some Lain merch.

Which characters feel the most like “real people?”

I’ve thought about the differences between “good” characters, “developed” ones and ones that make me think, “Either I know someone exactly like this, or I could believe them as real people.”

Who are some characters that fit category three?

Parked my car outside at 6 PM. Go to leave at 8 AM and see this.

I can’t identify a particular smell or anything, and it wasn’t there 14 hours prior. Nobody to my knowledge was in there, and if they were, they definitely weren’t supposed to be.

Edit: thank you all for the help! Two things seem most likely to me - either my kid got something on themselves before they climbed in the car, or someone with something on them decided to rummage through it. I’m going to look a little deeper when I go to clean it.

I read a theory about a word possibly being burned away before we’re left with “never knows best.” What do you think?

I thought it was an interesting idea - maybe there’s a part of the message we’re missing, or maybe there was something else, but being left with only these three words is a message on its own.

What do you think?

WA State to SoCal

I’ve been in NW Washington (30-60 minutes from Seattle) for about four years now, and though I love the scenery, I think I’m ready for something new.

I’ve been thinking about somewhere in the San Gabriel Valley area, OC or maybe even LA and its nearby suburbs, depending on where work takes me. Has anyone made a similar move? If so, did anything catch you off guard? Are you glad you made the move, or do you regret it?
