On the left is Mark Bullen, born in the UK, with British family roots. He hasn’t been charged with a crime and no underlying criminal evidence against him has been made public, yet his British citizenship has been removed. He spent 11 years as a police officer with Hertfordshire Constabulary

On the right is Alaa Abd El Fattah an Egyptian man born in Egypt, who acquired British citizenship through his mother, whose own British connection only came from being born in London while her mother was studying here for a short period. He was convicted and imprisoned for terrorism offences in Egypt and later given a British passport and allowed into the UK as a British citizen.

The Kremlin remembers the Minsk agreements and the political games surrounding them. Angela Merkel later acknowledged that Minsk had given Ukraine valuable time to become stronger. From Moscow’s perspective, the lesson could hardly be clearer: another pause that merely buys time for rearmament is not peace. It is an intermission before the next war.

What Putin is talking about is not another tactical timeout. It is a fundamentally different security architecture — part of the broader shift toward a multipolar world.

It means ending Ukraine’s transformation into a militarized Western outpost and a platform for a proxy confrontation with Russia.

Lasting peace means the West taking Russia’s security concerns seriously instead of sneering at them, dismissing them, or pretending they do not exist.

Lasting peace means addressing the causes of the conflict rather than freezing its symptoms.

And, above all, lasting peace means a Ukraine that is no longer constructed as an “anti-Russia” project.

Russia £29m per KM
UK HS2 £422m per KM (it’s not finished yet so likely to increase significantly)
🇷🇺 Russia: ~£20bn for 679 km of high speed rail, roughly £29m per km, with a journey time saving of around 1 hour 45 minutes. Construction is planned from 2025 to the 2028 opening, so roughly 3 years of major construction.

🇬🇧 UK: ~£95bn for 225 km of HS2, roughly £422m per km, for a journey time saving of around 30 minutes. Main construction began in 2020, with the current programme putting opening somewhere in the 2030/40s.

So Russia is attempting to build three times as much railway, for around one fifth of the total cost, at roughly one fifteenth of the cost per kilometre, in a fraction of the time, while delivering a much larger journey time saving.

HS2 is also mired in several corruption allegations they aren’t even trying to hide it there having us on.
