Help Me Decide - Self-Employed or McDonalds

I earn approximately £50,000 working a demanding office job. However, I want to save money and make myself financially secure.

I currently work weekends at McDonald’s to make an extra £500.00 per month. Would I be better off going self-employed and tutoring A-Level students or GCSE students, or stick with McDonald’s? I don’t like the McDonald’s job, but I’m not in a situation where I could absorb a financial hit if, say, my car broke down fully.

Is the risk too big?

I don’t have the capacity to do both.

How do you start a tutoring business?

I want to start a tutoring business in the UK. I’m interested in online tutoring and hold multiple postgraduate degrees and have extensive teaching experience. I would want it to be part-time around my main occupation.

How soon can I set up a tutoring business and make an income? If you have a tutoring business, how much do you earn?

Do you use the default ios keyboard on your iPhone 17 Pro?

Which keyboard do you use? I've been experimenting with SwiftKey but miss the writing tools, specifically the proofreading tool, available when using the default iOS keyboard.

Mous iPad and AirPods Max cases - Why do they not exist?

I had a wonderful experience with Mous Support last week, continuing to demonstrate their promise to value their customers.

However, I’m curious, why does the company not make cases for the AirPods Max or iPads?

Estate Agents (Seller’s Perspective) - What to watch out for?

I have posted about my situation on this farm at least a couple of times and have decided that after several months, I want to sell the property. I may financially break even, but I’m likely to lose money, which I am willing to accept.

Among my mistakes was being too trusting of estate agents when purchasing the property.

Now that I am adopting the role of the seller, what should I be cautious about when attempting to sell my property? I’ve been transparent regarding the condition and other factors that a buyer might be interested in, but I want to protect my own interests as well. How do I choose a good estate agent? The two estate agencies I’ve been in communication with have given me the same valuation, but I’ve noticed that all the estate agents I’ve been in discussion with have been quite young and have managerial titles. Is anyone that works as an estate agent just given the title of manager, or do these titles actually have weight?

Selling within 6 Months After Adding a New Roof

I bought a house in Wales for £180,000 and added a new roof and added new lead flashing to the chimney. The house is functional but not attractive. I want to move because I don’t want to be 100 miles from my parents and I don’t want a big project in a house I plan to sell.

However, it needs an interior overhaul, and I miss my family and home city in the south of England. I’d be happy to rent again, but I had a 0% deposit mortgage and will need to pay a 6% Early Repayment Charge. I can afford it to pay the solicitor fees and ERC, but will attempt to add some of the cost of the new roof to the price. The roof does have a 20 year guarantee or warranty.

The house will be going on the market in a few weeks. How should I approach selling and am I likely to find a buyer in 3 months? I don’t want potential buyers to be put off by the quick sale, and can explain that we want to return to our home city. I’m not interested in profit and am willing to even take a small personal loan. I am honestly just desperate to move back to my home city.

I cannot handle the financial responsibilities of renting the property out, and my mental health is declining.

Edit: We will be looking to rent in our home city. Therefore, we will not be in a chain.

Repointing - Am I Ready?

Last week or the week before, I posted a photograph of my ground floor window and lead above my canopy and asked what I should do to fill the gap where there was previously mortar. I received mixed responses, some saying I should use mortar and others saying I should use lead sealant.

I’ve decided to repoint using mortar and might add lead sealant on top afterwards. I will also be using Stormdry on the masonry to improve water resistance.

Anyway, I want to ask what are your views on my setup.

I have the following:
- Ready Mixed Mortar from B&Q (20 KG)
- Flexible bucket for mixing
- Drill with mixing attachment
- Jointing tool

I am now preparing an Amazon order. Please see the attached images.

What am I missing and are these acceptable items?

At what stage would you request a warranty replacement?

Good morning everyone,

I’ve purchased many Mous cases over the years as, until now, I’ve changed phones every few months and passed my old phones onto family members.

My wife has the iPhone 16 Pro Max I previously used, and my dad has my old Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. On both cases, the sides have started to warp, particularly near the buttons. This has meant the case does not have as tight a hold on the phone and there are more parts exposed than on a fully functional and new Mous case. The camera control button for the iPhone 16 Pro Max has also fallen out and been misplaced.

I have the receipts for the cases, and they can still technically be used, but they are eyesores and frustrating considering the price.

Would you submit a warranty replacement at this point? Also, my wife and dad might want a different case from another brand, so would I be able to request a warranty replacement for my iPhone 17 Pro Max instead of those phones? I already have an aramid fibre case for my current phone, but would really like another finish, too.

I’d appreciate a reply from anyone, including Mous UK.

Edit: I have proof of purchase for both Mous cases.

Purchased a house in South Wales and want to sell after 3 months

I know I will need to wait until the Land Registry has been updated, which could take at least six months in total approximately.

I purchased a house in South Wales for £180,000 and have added a completely new roof and leaded the chimney.

The problem is, it needs an interior overhaul and I realised that I miss my family and home city in the south of England. I’d be happy to go back to renting, but I had a 0% deposit mortgage and will need to pay an Early Repayment Charge of 6%. I’m able to cover the ERC.

The house is functional, just not pretty. The reason I want to move is because I’ve realised I do not want to be 100 miles from my parents and I do not want a massive project in a house I’m determined to sell to move home.

How should I approach selling? I don’t want potential buyers to be put off by the quick sale. I’m not interested in profit and am willing to even take a small personal loan. I am honestly just desperate to move back to my home city.

Painted wallpaper - what is the most cost-effective approach?

I purchased a house. I do not like it, so I plan to sell it as soon as possible, which will most likely be in three or seven years.

I’m not very good with DIY, so I want the easiest approach possible, but I’ve also just taken out a loan on a roof, so I’ve also got no money to spend hiring professionals.

In the upstairs bedrooms, the walls have wallpaper that feels very hard due to being painted over. Ideally, I’d want to remove the wallpaper, but I’m really worried that it’s going to tear off the plastering, and I cannot afford to get a plasterer in.

How can I smooth this out and paint over it?

How much does liveable space matter?

How does a good-condition house at 85-95 sqm compare to a worn-down 120 sqm house that needs renovating?

Imagine the worn-down house has a functional bathroom, kitchen, and even a new roof, but would benefit from being modernised and plastering in areas.

Does space actually matter?

I’m describing my situation regarding the worn-down house, but I am having a new roof put on this week 😭.

Edit: Impact on pricing, too!

Hate The House I Just Bought - Invest Money or Leave It

I’ve purchased a property in Newport that needs some work and updating. My bigger issue, though, is that I miss my home city.

My wife and I have decided that we would like to move back to our home city as soon as possible, with two years being a realistic timeline. Do we invest in removing the wallpaper (which has been painted over numerous times) or other costly cosmetic improvements, or do we just keep the house structurally sound?

I’m already replacing the roof this week. I’ve read putting money into cosmetics is a sunk cost.
